The Garden Gurus Review: RMA 510 V Battery Lawn Mower

STIHL have been the leaders in handheld garden tools for as long as I can remember, and now they are leading the way once again with their impressive range of lawn mowers, all of which are battery powered.
With quiet operation and zero exhaust emissions, a STIHL battery lawn mower will transform your mowing experience. There are eight mowers in the range covering gardens of all shapes and sizes, whether you have a small courtyard in the city, a larger block in the suburbs, or if you’re a landscaper or commercial gardener looking to make the switch to battery.
For a larger lawn, STIHL recommend this model, the RMA 510 V, which is one of over 30 tools in their impressive AP battery system, a system that’s designed for large home gardens and professional use. It can mow up to the size of a full tennis court on a single charge, and with the second battery storage slot, you can easily double that to two tennis courts. These batteries only take up to 35 minutes to charge, so, technically, you could mow all day if you wanted to!
One of the best things about STIHL’s battery lawn is just how easy they are to start. To get them going all you need to do is flip up the cover and pop the battery into the slot, and you’re ready to go.
Under this cover you’ll also see this safety key, a great feature if you’re worried the kids might try and take the mower for a spin. And this switch here activates the ECO-mode, another great feature on most of STIHL’s mowers which maximises cutting performance to conserve battery life. When the blade senses less resistance on shorter or less dense grass, it drops the blade speed to maximise the area you can cover.
With the battery installed, all that’s left to start the mower is a push of a button; no setting the choke or pulling on a starter cord like a petrol mower that’s been left in the shed through winter.
If you’re mowing for a long period of time, then comfort and maneuverability are key. The handle bar can be adjusted through three positions depending on your height, and the large easy running wheels with ball bearings make the mower easy to maneuver and distributes the weight evenly.
The cutting height on this mower and all STIHL mowers can be easily adjusted to suit your lawn’s needs and the time of year with just one lever, and there are eight settings ranging from 25mm -100mm.
The V in the RMA 510 V name stands for self-propelled variable speed. This makes mowing easier as you don’t have to physically push it along. Walking speed can be adjusted to suit your stride, ranging from a relaxing stroll to a brisk walk.
The RMA 510 V has a whopping 51cm cutting width, and a 70L mesh catcher allowing you to do more mowing with less stopping, and the large opening makes it extremely easy to empty. As standard, the mower also features an option to mulch by inserting the mulching plug, or side eject by activating the side chute; great if you’re maintaining a large area or longer grass where you don’t really need to collect up the clippings.
When you are done, put the battery on charge ready for the next cut, or pop it into one of 30 other tools in STIHL’s AP battery system which includes blower, chainsaws, grass trimmers - even KombiSystems. And, if space is an issue in your shed or garage, this is the mower for you. This particular model completely folds down so it can be stored off the ground if need be. You can also store in an upright position, which is handy for checking the blade and giving it a quick clean.

No good for over grown lawns I've watched alot of reviews on Stihl battery mowers and it only has two height settings

Been using a Stihl battery mower now just on 3 years. It does a reasonable job, but in warmer weather, you get way less run time between battery charges. The batteries also get quite hot, so not sure about longevity.

I'd been researching the electric mowers and I'm thinking unless we have solar to to charge the battery's a petrol mower is still a better option unless you have a tiny garden and you have a lawn like Sir Walter.

You mentioned (at 2:40) “when you are done, put the battery on charge”. Why do you recommend storing fully charged when most other lithium battery manufacturers recommend that lithium batteries should be stored at approx 40% to 60% charge, not fully charged? I always charge my battery just before I want to use it, and after five years it is still perfect.

Useless JUNK. Won't pick up leaves or pine needles, NO BLADE OPTIONS; needs a high-lift blade. Leaves mowhawks no matter the height setting. Unless the grass is bone dry all the mulch gets packed into the deck. Dealer support? Sure, up to the door! $900.00 piece of crap!

What bullshit! Wheels follow the track from the previous cut; perfect mowhawks! Nothing like cutting a freshly mowed lawn; cuttings in the bag came from elsewhere!
