The bluecoats are famous for pushing the artistic envelope. Another trippy show from them is the 2022 show, but tbh I think bluecoats 2018 is simply amazing, the best.

I went to a DCI performance (not the finals) and at the end of all the performances all the band's brass sections did an encore, as one unit, and performed America the Beautiful and it was the most amazing wall of sound that I have ever experienced as a spectator. Just imagine 400-500 brass in concert. An experience I'll never forget.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the performance. It always seems to mean a bit more when it comes from someone who is a professional musician, who hasn't ever seen a DCI show before! You know what this takes and it's great to see that appreciation coming from a place of experience. Some fun (and not-so-fun) random DCI facts: In 2013 Carolina Crown won the Jim Ott Award for musical excellence (brass caption award) with their "E = mc^2" performance (featuring music from the opera "Einstein on the Beach"). The tuplet-tonguing in the closer was a real feat, and their tone quality throughout the show is just not to be believed until you've heard it. Truly astounding. Amusingly, their colorguard demonstrates one of the consequences of Einstein's Theory of Relativity in the final beats of the closer (yes, really). It costs top-twelve corps well over a million dollars per year to field a corps. Members pay a tuition of between $5K-$6 or more. This (among other, sadder reasons I won't discuss here) has caused the Garfield Cadets, one of the oldest DCI corps with a 90-year history, to declare bankruptcy and unfortunately stop fielding their corps for the foreseeable future as of 2024. Santa Clara Vanguard also took a year off in 2023 for financial reasons; they are back in 2024. This is not the first time this has happened to a corps and almost surely will not be the last. Injuries are a constant threat in this activity. In 2014 one of the Blue Devils colorguard members had to resign due to a broken vertebra as a result of a missed rifle toss from far away (15 yards IIRC) to her; my understanding at the time was that she was to catch it blind from behind, missed the grab, and the rifle hit her in the neck. Twitter had a picture of her in a neck brace. I saw a member's face get cut open by the point of his saber from a few feet away during one of our shows with the Madison Scouts in 1994. He tossed what's called a "blade seven" (toss using the blade, not the hilt; spin seven times in the air, catch). He finished the show. I myself have a permanently deformed thumb from a missed rifle catch during a rehearsal that same summer (the butt came down between the knuckles). I marched the next night's show with a broken thumb without knowing it was broken. OWWOWOWOOOoops! Other past DCI shows shows of note: Roman Images - Star of Indiana 1991 (some of the most ridiculous drill ever to be performed, written by DCI legend George Zingali) Medea - Star of Indiana 1993 (almost singlehandedly responsible for what DCI has evolved into; that show's influence is still felt today) T\LT - Bluecoats 2014 (brilliant use of electronics when they were still very new and controversial in DCI) Felliniesque - Blue Devils 2014 (the brass writing is truly top-notch; it's a professional-level book) Inventions for a New Millennium - Santa Clara Vanguard 1999 (Santa Clara's only other 1st place, and a tie at that) And I'd be very remiss if I didn't mention the closest 1st/2nd place World Class Finals in DCI history: Constantly Risking Absurdity - Blue Devils 2008 (2nd) Spartacus - Phantom Regiment 2008 (1st) The spread there was .025 points.

Reminds me of my younger years being in a marching band and then later in a Drum & Bugle Corp! Not only to mention the precision and artistry of the music and arrangement! The tremendous work into the choreography! This takes so much dedication! Everything was timed perfectly, even the batons were spinning in unison! What such appreciation I have for these artists! Touche!

Drum Corps International is the proverbial rabbit hole when it comes to music and marching. Many High School Marching Bands transitioned to "Corps Style" shows back in the mid 70's when I was in high school. Now the majority of bands emulate drum corps rather than the old High Step military style like Ohio State University. You name it from all the flavors of Jazz to Rock and Classical to Broadway, every genre and various styles have been performed on the field with amazing feel and precision. Do yourself a big favor and watch as much as you can then plan on coming here to Indianapolis in August to see and hear this rabbit hole that is Drum Corps up close and personal at DCI Champioships. Your world will be rocked and you will never be the same again, I promise!

Boston crusaders has been killing it the past couple years they went from barley making finals to now competing with the top groups I would recommend their 2018 show amazing marching, amazing brass, best colorgaurd and the longest drum breaks

@@void8422 No it doesn't Void8422. From the early 60's it has meant Bad Ass Crusaders. It's only been watered down when parents were told what it stood for. Since the 75th Gala in 2015, it has also meant Becoming A Champion.

i went to one of their audition camps recently (and got cut) but i met some amazing musicians and they age 17-22 years old. amazing people. i recommend bluecoats 2017 or 2016, some of their peak shows and amazing soloists

The maximum number of members on the field is 165, including DM's. The number of props and drill may give the impression one corps is larger than another.

I feel like if you watch DCI you have to watch Phantom Regiment 2008. A few of my favorites from the Bluecoats are their 2016, 2014, and 2011 shows. Santa Clara Vanguard who wasnt able to field a show in 2023 had a very good show in 2018. I hope you can check out a few of these shows!

This call out “bloooooo” was born around 1986. The 1987 season is important because its when coats made world finals (big deal ) climbed from 1986 15th place into top 12 and corp’s song/ anthem became “Autumn Leaves “ (fan favorite) because it was their closer tune and propelled them in finals…. rest is history not too shabby for a corps that was verge of bankruptcy in 1983

"Drum corps" different from "Marching band" as there are no woodwinds in drum corps. This corps has some of the most unique shows in the last 10-15 years. If you like The Beatles, you would love their 2019 and 2021 shows. Their 2022 show was fantastic as well. Also highly recommend: Phantom Regiment 2010, Cadets 2011 (!!!!!!!), Phantom Regiment 2008, Cavaliers 2010/2011, these are just a few of the recommendations.

Carolina Crown came in 1st in brass and Cavaliers came in 1st in Percussion. I miss the Drum Corps days when you didn’t Mike anyone. There was no recording of someone speaking over the corps to tell you a story that is mostly repeated passages over and over. Just good old fashion wailing! Bluecoats have been on this 60’s trip of a show for the past three years. It’s time for them to move on. There is so much talent here, they could do better shows. Love ‘ya Blooooo!!
