Just so you guys know these performers are high school to 21 years old. They practice and perform all summer to get to this level. A lot of the dancers are color guard members that don’t play. They spin flags, rifles and sabers. Believe it or not, some of the top high school bands aren’t that far off in terms of quality. One big difference between dci and high school bands are that there’s no woodwinds in dci, only brass and percussion. I found this video because my son’s high school marching band is playing one of the songs that svg played in 2018 so I wanted to check them out. Welcome to the world of DCI!!

Check out Bluecoats 2014's show, "Tilt". Such another huge crowd pleaser (along with many, many others). Also Bluecoats 2019 is all Beatles music. Carolina Crown's E=MC^2 is another one. These guys in every top drum corps work hundreds of hours on perfecting shows just like this one. To your question about judges in these shows - each section has 1-2 judges. The percussion judge, brass judge, color guard (flags, rifles, sabers) judge, and then there are judges that look at the overall visual production of the show. As well as judges that listen solely to the music. Phantom Regiment 2010 and 2011 are also pretty emotional shows.

I absolutely LOVED the respect and genuine reaction from both of you. I am a FMM of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps ('77--'87, Baritone/Contrabass player), and I can tell you this... Drum Corps is MUCH, MUCH more than just being able to perform in front of 50K+ people, play a horn, bang a drum, spin a flag, or march around making cool pictures on the field. What you are seeing here is what we like to call, "Marching Music's Major League"... the absolute best of the best !!! A very popular 1st place performance is the 2008 Phantom Regiment-- Spartacus... 1986 Blue Devil's is, IMHO, the pinnacle of Jazz at the highest level. At the very core of each group is a lifelong experience of ups and downs, personal goals, brotherhood (Madison Scouts and the Cavaliers), and friendships that stick forever. In some cases, it changes people's lives. I'm so glad that you enjoyed what you saw... but, beware... it's addictive !!! THIS is a DEEP rabbit hole. 😎💚🤍🖤🏳🌈

I was in high school marching band in the late seventies and early 80s and we would start learning the music and basic movements of our show in the summer at band camp. We would practice all week after school and then start doing our show at halftime of the home football games. We did different competitions as well, but your goal was the state competition. Judges lol....yes they were on the field weaving in and out of us (I was in the percussion section, 1 of 8 snare drummers) and we were always told "if a judge is in your way, hit them or they will mark you for breaking your formation and deduct from the overall score. ". Never hit anyone personally, but saw it happen a few times. Thanks for reacting to this. Great memories of those days.

I love to see people introduced to DCI. It's been such a big part of my life for decades as a member of the Bluecoats in 1991 and our 50th Anniversary Bluecoats Alumni Corps in 2022. I was there in Indianapolis for this live and unfortunately didn't appreciate this show enough at the time. But the more I watch it now, the more I love it mostly because of the passion on display. The ballad with the baritone duet and then that massive full horn line entrance are simply iconic. A friend I marched Bluecoats with in 1991 taught SCV's mellophones in 2018 and they are absolute beasts, especially in the ending from the insanely difficult fast runs to that long and powerful sustain. Such an incredible show! Hope you enjoy more DCI soon. Subscribing! 😊💙🍁

So glad to see your first reaction. Seen are you major corps with at least 150 other feeder corps not nearly as complex, small, and still head and shoulders in talent above HS bands. Our percussion, average age 14 would take a drumline sectional that a hs band was attempting (17 and 18 year olds) and recorded how to do it, in roughly 5 minutes . One run, then recorded. It was perfect. The band kids stopped whining when it was shown how to do it. Love your physical training and yes those in the horn line need to do rifles, and flags, just to enter the line. Playing a horn is a given and is passing the first gate. Now recommendations? The bridgeman from bergen county circa 1977-78 or just before were outstanding. You will love toward the end the corps making a made dash pkaying circus tunes and roughly six of them on15 to 20 foot stilts. Amazing.

So here is kind of a breakdown on how this activity works. Drum Corps International (DCI) founded in 1972, currently consists of 3 classes World, Open, and All Age. 21 Drum and Bugle Corps currently compete in World Class, 16 in Open Class, and 13 in All-Age thanks to a recent partnership with Drum Corps Associates (DCA). Starting in late Fall/Early Winter, corps will hold auditions, Camps/Rehearsals will start in mid Winter typically late December early January. Tours start in mid June, these corps travel through out the United States by charter buses with a show every weekend, all the way up until Finals week in August. This is kinda of the gist about drum corps I know I am leaving out a lot of information.

This is the 2018 DCI World Champion show. For their sins, as first place winners they got to perform this *again* following the awards ceremony. "Grueling" is one word for this. Since I've been a fan of DCI since 1992, let me help send you down the DCI rabbit hole. Other winning (and not!) shows of note (from memory, pardon any errors) are: Roman Images (Star of Indiana [defunct], 1991) Medea (Star of Indiana, 1993) In Spring, at the Time when Kings go Off to War (Cadets of Bergen County [sadly, newly defunct as of 2024], 1993) - based on a symphonic band piece of the same name by David Holsinger Rhythms at the Edge of Time (Blue Devils, 1999, tie for first place) Inventions for a New Millennium (Santa Clara Vanguard, 1999, tie for first place) Frameworks (Cavaliers 2002) - original score composed for the show 007 (Cavaliers 2004) - James Bond, ofc Constantly Risking Absurdity (Blue Devils, 2008) - closest 2nd place finish in DCI history Spartacus (Phantom Regiment, 2008) - closest 1st place winner in DCI history (be SURE to watch the whole thing, including the pre-show) The Grass is Always Greener (Carolina Crown, 2009) E = MC^2 (Carolina Crown, 2013) - small spoiler, the colorguard elegantly demonstrates Einstein's Theory of Relativity at the end of the show (yes, really!) - 2013 Winners of the Jim Ott caption award for brass excellence T\LT (Bluecoats, 2014) - the slow piece is called "The Hymn of Axciom" by Vienna Teng; be sure to have a listed to the full piece (with transcription) here on KZbin Felliniesque (Blue Devils, 2014) Ink (Blue Devils, 2015) Down Side Up (Bluecoats, 2016) - they aren't booing, they are BLLLLOOOOO-ing Metamorph (Blue Devils, 2018) The Garden of Love (Bluecoats, 2023) The Cut-Outs (Blue Devils, 2023) I know I've left out the bulk of some of the best (Relentless, Inferno.... etc) but the list already spans three decades, lol. Enjoy!

Although technically the horns are no longer "bugles" that's how this whole thing started: Drum and Bugle Corps. I won't go into the history, that may or may not come out, but these groups still go by the moniker Drum and Bugle Corps, or drumcorps for short and for those that participate (and most will cringe at "marching band"). I marched in the sixties and it was WAY different, only the standards haven't changed at all...clean or go home. Somebody already suggested Bluecoats 2014 and I heartily agree, actually more of a "drum corps" show than you just saw...SCV pushing it forward...but to me, 'Coats take the cake for "show."
