The wood stake is more for the roots as it climbs up- the bottom of the plant sometimes dies off and the plant survives by sucking up water in the wood stake

We built our new farm market stand this week in the blistering heat. We’ve been fending off white butterflies and now the rotten caterpillars that followed. We’ve been desperate for some good drenching rain and that finally showed up last night. I didn’t realise how tired I was after closing the lolly shop and working 6 days a week for 15 years, then full steam ahead last year with our strawberry and flower farm. I completely understand the burn out, the overwhelming feeling of tiredness the minute I realise it’s time to go and work in the flower and strawberry field. Maybe it’s been the relentless early heat but I wake up and feel just as exhausted as the day before and the season is only just getting started. Time to get dressed and fill the market stand with all of the goodies i baked last night and then try and make a garden around the farm stand and some bouquets before people start arriving. Have a great weekend :)

were I live we had 41c on Friday and 38 yesterday and my love for potted plants is doing well, so after I have lost just 15 plants in one week it has been sad to see so many of them just so much water,,, As for my strawberries another year and just little ones.. Keep safe and all the best with your flowers

Your stand sounds amazing!! One day I’ll visit and buy something from you! The early heat has really hit us. Daylight savings makes it hard too.. going to bed is late. I wish this country would get rid of daylight savings, they got rid of it in Mexico!

@@phaedragardeness we have been battling 100% humidity today and over 33 degrees. My tunnel reach the thermometer maximum today 50 degrees. I had to have a lay down when i came in and slept for an hour the heat and humidity just knock me around so much now in my 50’s I used to be able to handle it but as I get older i seem to cope less each year
@elizabethstreeter2145Ай бұрын
Don’t agree with you on daylight saving I think it is great then I don’t have children any more but the savings in power that it has to make as you don’t have to turn your lights on till later especially when you see qld that is daylight at 4am and dark by 6 pm crazy and they work through the heat of the day. There timing should be earlier all year.

My comment is unrelated to gardening but related to exhaustion. Like so many of us women we don’t know how to rest and keep pushing through to get things done. Well end of 2023 I was diagnosed with stage 4 ILC breast cancer. No lumps, no bumps, some pain I was able to pass off on this or that. First signs exhaustion. Please always get checks as now I live with a life limiting disease. So far doing really well but it causes stress, which luckily I mostly deal with. Never ignore exhaustion.

Last 2 years my hard work was being eaten by slugs snails and whatever else...plus the rascal possums. Was so defeated almost three it all in....BUT this year I have an abundance and I mean and huge number of ladybugss...so many that when I water they crawl up my legs. Was watering seedling at night and it did creep me out thinking spiders...when I saw the ladybugs was very relieved. Have lots of bees and even dragonflies too as have added a small pond and all of a sudden I am back in the game...😊❤😊 Now about to try my hand at canning for first time ever making pasata with all my tomatoes and herbs. Am also making a good start in my apothecary stash. Sure is wonderful to finally harvest for tomorrow and beyond...happy dance ❤

Summer has come early and yes my backyard was not looking too good. Then all that heavy rain hit us and my front and back were flooded three times, I lost so many plants because of the water log and it started to dry and weeds are all back a growing back. My main concern now is the snakes as my neighbour had one in her backyard.... Keep safe and I hope your dam has water in it.
@phaedragardenessАй бұрын
Oh the weeds and long grass, they are out of control here too. We couldn’t keep on top of it 😩. More rain this weekend too. I try stomp when I’m coming near the longer grass and can’t see properly. The black snakes will get away! Take care Netty x

Great work Phaedra, overseas countries don’t realise that our heat is completely different to theirs. We are so much hotter, intense and dry. Isn’t it satisfying when you cross off jobs on your list. I always make lists and you feel you achieved something when you cross off. I spray Aeroguard on my hands then pat my face with it, it seems to work. Stay safe ❤

@@phaedragardenessit’s super harsh. And yes this summer is so much hotter than the last 3 years. Maybe once you’ve finished you could give yourself a yoghurt face mask with some sandalwood to take the heat out of your face. I got rosacea from the stress and heat. Yoghurt was soothing. Also for the flies there’s an Australian cream “Natures Botanicals” rosemary, cedar wood & olive oil. Was made originally by an old man for his horses. Anyway stops mozzies and flies. But only buy the cream as the slight stickiness keeps it active on your skin. Last forever. Loved you vid and have subscribed. I’m near Bendigo and love Yackandandah. Off to Mt Beauty for a few days r&r on the river with my dog.

The reason why you have to put a stake up with the dragon fruit is that they are a special type of cactus that grow by climbing up trees. So they don't have the core strength to keep themselves up. They're not like the saguaro cactus of Arizona, USA, the Cactus Emoji🌵. Nor do they act like a bush like the prickly pear cactus, the invasive cactus of Australia. But if you keep them warm enough through the winter and you don't let them get sunburned your Cactus will live.
@phaedragardenessАй бұрын
Thankyou!! I can see now it’s kind if a floppy cactus. Hopefully I can keep it alive through winter!

The flies are absolutely driving me crazy, they are relentless. It's the small ones that don't scare easily - so even waving your hands around, they won't move. I've inhaled five this week, fun times. I have a DIY net hat but I'm going to have to get a proper one, I think. I can deal with the heat and the humidity... it's the flies that make me cranky and fed up after being outside for 10 minutes.
