The "gay age gap" is partially attributable to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 80s & 90s. One thing unfortunately lost with the countless lives was the cultural knowledge that would have been passed down from one generation of gay men to the next. It's almost like a broken chain. That said, this video is still great!

Koen K he's correct cause most of us don't know these things. We learn our manners from parents and pop culture from friends and media. Not everyone is going to sit down and search this stuff up. @Zestylemon137 жыл бұрын
Ok first of all I agree the chain was skipped a bit so not all of us 90's gays can get every reference and a rare few *ahem* were raised in a 70's 80's bubble lol but it also doesnt mean we can't learn on our own. I think this kind of mentality is what makes a large divide happen among older and younger gays
@psycmajor7 жыл бұрын

Growing up as a young gay black kid, I wasn't really exposed to anything or anyone mentioned in the video (probably heard of them in passing, but that was about it) and as a gay black adult, I didn't really seek them out. In fact, much of what I was already familiar with in terms of music, movies, and icons constituted much of *black* gay culture. And that was good enough for me. So it's interesting when this kind of conversation comes up, because the question I want to ask is: "exactly WHOSE gay culture are you referring to? Because it ain't mine."
@lostalex779 жыл бұрын
+Onyx Nightshade you really should expand your world and stop being so shallow.
@TheOnyxNightshade9 жыл бұрын
lostalex77 So because I had a different cultural experience, I'm being shallow? Let me ask you: how much do you think your typical older gay white man (like the one represented in this video) knows about black pop cultural history? Our Old Hollywood idols? Musical legends? Film classics? Even iconic TV shows? Answer: probably not much, and I wouldn't blame or shame him for it because that's not his cultural experience. But I'm sure you would agree someone like that should "expand his world" as well, yes? Make no mistake, I have no problem exposing myself to new things that organically pique my interest, but what I will NOT do is apologize for not having stored in my mental bank pop cultural references that were never on my radar to begin with, nor will I subscribe to the notion that not having said cultural references makes me a "bad gay."
@lostalex779 жыл бұрын
Onyx Nightshade no, i just think you need to stop segregating yourself so much. you seem unpleasant.
@TheOnyxNightshade9 жыл бұрын
I could understand your charge that I'm "segregating" myself if I expressed a refusal to expose myself to cultures outside of my own, but I never did that, nor did I ever indicate that I was unaware of cultures outside of my own (only specifically the mainstream white gay cultural references made in this video). So please explain where you get this idea that I'm "segregating myself." And if I come across as "unpleasant," let it not be forgotten that it was you who initiated the unpleasantness by labeling me shallow for doing nothing more than relating my cultural background and experience.

@@Alyakismydutchname she's right in the middle, born in the 86, she's 9 years older than me. We barely notice the gap until we have different opinions on humour.

@@melisacaceres8740 Ah okay, I always feel confused because most of my friends are tail-end millennials around my age (I'm 27) and a couple of early-gen zoomers, but we all spent a lot of time on the internet as kids/teens and are mostly art kids so our humor styles are fairly similar. I guess it depends more on personal interests because I've hung out with some other people around my age who have no clue what I'm joking about lol Tbh though, I have had to Google more references lately because I'm always working now instead of occasionally socializing and browsing memes online. I never thought I would feel so old and outdated in my 20's 😬 Also, thanks for replying! :D

@@Alyakismydutchname Your welcome. You seem so nice! Well with my gf happens that she founds honesty funny and i don't (maybe because i never had to hold back), and that seems something very common in millenial humour. As a gen z, i find lack of logic funny, if something it's so bizarre i can't find a sense to it, i laugh to tears. But that's about it, we find a common ground with memes about our interests, so it's not a big deal. It's just that my gf often forgets she's almost a decade older than me 😂.
