This week we on Pop Fix we reflect on one of the most prolific hit songwriters. His music had an unprecedented impact on our music community. In this episode we hear from two of his fans, rock and roll hall of famers Lamont Dozier of Motown and David Crosby.

In 1980 Phil Collins and Genesis landed a #14 smash with Misunderstanding from the wonderful platinum album DUKE that was there first LP to hit #1 in the UK. Then Phil turned right around and released his perfect debut album Face Value that hit #1 in the UK and #7 in the US it featured his classic “In the Air Tonight “that went to #2 in the UK and #19 here in the US which is, a great example of a song that was far bigger than it’s chart position. it is still played every day across the world and beloved in pop culture, especially for the bombastic drum crash.
In 1981 he went back with Genesis for the multi platinum album ABACAB another UK #1 with several hit singles on both sides of the Atlantic then immediately released the solo set “Hello I Must Be Going” hitting the top ten worldwide, showing of his Rand B roots with the Motown remake “ You Can’t Hurry Love’ that went to top of the charts in his native England and became his first top 10 hit in the US. OK, are you still with me? Because we haven’t even gotten to his peak yet!
After all that success, he released the 4x platinum self titled Genesis album in 1983 that hit number one in the UK and contained the #6 hit “That’s All” with it’s brilliant and catchy chorus. paving the way for his first solo number one hit the heart wrenching ballad “Against All Odds” which was nominated for an Oscar. The Oscars didn’t even let him perform his own song. He instead sat in the audience as dancer Ann Reinking performed a mostly lip-synced vocal performance accompanied by a dance routine. Phil has never received the respect he so rightly deserves.
The 1985’s #1 blockbuster “No Jacket Required” which was number one in every country in the world and put the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna on notice from a guy that looked more like your uncle Charlie than a pop idol. It was 12 times platinum in america alone, with global sales that have been estimated at over 20 million. Stacked with hit singles galore including the number one hits Sussudio and One More Night as well as the top tens Take Me Home and Don’t Lose my number, the album crossed over to just about every genre and chart and won the Grammy for album of the year.
In 1986 with Genesis and created the 6 x time platinum “Invisible Touch” it was written entirely through group improvisation with no material developed prior it’s recording. With the Invisible Touch album Genesis became the first band and foreign act to have 5 top ten hits from one record. They hit number one with the title track and the top 5 with Land of Confusion with it’s memorable spitting image music video along with ’ Tonight Tonight Tonight, which was widely seen in a Michelob ad campaign, along with the two ballads Into Deep and Throwing it All Away.
Then in 88 Phil dropped three new solo songs on the soundtrack to his film Buster, two of which were released as singles and went to number one, the remake of “Groovy Kind of Love and Two Hearts, which he co-wrote with his Motown hero Lamont Dozier who wrote Most of the Supremes and Four Tops hits. Here’s what Lamont had to say about it:
Going into the 90s Phil would pull off the double whammy yet again with a massive hit album and hit songs both solo and with Genesis. Starting In 1990 He released the solo record, but, seriously which along with it’s first single the socially conscious ode to homelessness “Another Day In Paradise” would go to number one simultaneously . David Crosby sang on it with Phil and it won the Grammy for record of the year. Both the album and song went to number one in pretty much ever single country in the world. The next three singles, I wish it would rain, do you remember and Something happened on the way to heaven would all hit the top five and was followed by a massive world tour.
The second that was over, he reconvened with Genesis, for the Multi-platinum smash “We Cant’ Dance” that went to #1 in the UK and #4 in the US. It included four more hit singles with “I Can’t Dance” , No Son of Mine Hold on My Heart, and Jesus he knows me. All of this happened when grunge was taking over and the musical landscape was completely different. Phil would finish the 90s off with several more hit solo albums and win an Oscar for “you’ll be in my heart” from Disney’s Tarzan.

Great content, Professor. I was a kid in the 80's in my native Panama City, Panama, so it's the soundtrack of my life and Phil Collins was a major part of it. It's amazing how you're able to captivate an audience by talking about an artist and not beig able to play a single note from any of his songs. Remarkable, thanks for the video! Keep 'em comin'!

I’ve been a huge fan of Phil Collins and Genesis since 1980. In the late 80’s, I went on a search to find as many Genesis albums as I could from the Peter Gabriel era. That was not at all easy for a kid in Nebraska in those days, but I was lucky to get my hands on several including a few that were only released in the UK! Another music giant. I grew up with his music, and I've always loved his embracing and mixing up different genres. I can still remember seeing by chance the video of In The Air Tonight on TV and being mindblown, even having already heard a bit of Genesis before that. It also baffles me to see the amount of talent and quality there was on mainstream charts back then compared to now :(

I discovered Professor of Rock the other day with a video extolling the forgotten classic Level 42’s Something About You. Now he drops a video about my hero Phil Collins. I’m right at home here. I might also add to the accolades that Phil is responsible for making gated reverb a staple of the 80s music diet. He deserves not just a spot in the Rock hall of fame, he should be knighted for his contribution to the arts and British culture.

Genesis wrote some of the most downright beautiful and well constructed pieces during the 70s and even the 80s, I always considered them a "musician's band" both because every member were fantastically talented multi instrumentalists, and I find that musicians of all stripes have a lot of love for Phil and Genesis. Heathaze off of Duke may be the greatest songs ever written and the stretch of Genesis albums from "Nursery Cryme" through to "Abacab" are some of my favorite music ever in any genre or by any artist period. I personally like Peter Gabriel's version of Genesis a bit more for the story based theatrics and his ridiculously charismatic stage presence but Phil created a musical empire. A more appropriate way to end a video about Genesis and Phil Collins might be 30 chords and the truth LOL

Great video. Ive been a fan of Genesis and Phil's music for years. I've had my fair share of teasing and jibes from fellow musician's over the years as he criminally gets seen as a bit of a joke here in the UK. Sad but often true. But as you so rightly say in this video the guy was prolific. Listen to those early Genesis records, his drumming is virtuosic and frankly stunning. His voice on Invisible Touch is possibly the most muscular and powerful of all the Genesis records. his solo albums Face Value in particular, is brilliant in its breadth of styles and experimentation. I still listen to that record and hear new things. Time Phil and his band mates were recognised with respect for great musicianship and songwriting. Genesis were truly progressive rock. Each album a leap forward from the last. Thanks for making this video! x Matt

Totally spot on. Phil Collins is one of the most diverse and creative artist there has ever been. But people only hear “one more night” and “Groovy kind of love” His first album is stunning with many styles of music. If anyone gives me grief for being a Phil Collins fan then I assume they are ignorant twat. It is ok if they say they are not keen on his music or voice as tastes differ, but to say he is rubbish is just plan stupid.

Phil Collins and Genesis-the soundtracks of my life. Saw Phil in concert during the Serious Hits tour in 1990. The guy was an energizer bunny! Fantastic. He is truly one of a kind. Drumming god, singer extraordinaire, writing phenom. The talent is crazy. The Genesis 1986 Wembley concert is off the charts! That group is gifted beyond any other group. The finale Turn it on Again is a master class in performance. I don’t know where Phil got the energy to perform nonstop for years at such a high level. Thank you for doing this tribute. When you see all the consecutive song hits over 10 years, it’s mind blowing. Phil was great in Miami Vice and his music was used a lot in that show. The 80s were great times! Best times for music. @Thomas Scott I'm betting you've never really put on a great pair of headphones and listened to some of of Phil's great songs I mentioned with an open mind. If you did you wouldn't be able to stop your toe from tapping or the joy in your heart. Give it a shot.

Thomas Scott Anytime I hear someone say “corporate rock” or “they sold out” because they dared to write a hit song that appeals to the masses... it just screams “Music Snob” to me. And just because a song or album is popular, that doesn’t make it bad.

Thank you for this video. Phil is my favorite artist and his music has been the definitive soundtrack of my life. I've seen him perform a dozen times in New York, London, and Paris both solo and with Genesis. I'm looking forward to the new Genesis tour that I'm certain will come to America next year. I might still fly to England just to see them, not sure yet. I really appreciate the props you give him for the unbelievable success he has accomplished with his undeniable talent, hard work ethic, and straight forward lyrical style. I have nothing to add because you covered everything I wanted to say plus I never realized that he is indeed the only artist to have a successful solo and band career simultaneously. He is the definition of a legend! The greatest musician of all time, Phil Collins.

This video is everything. I mean, Phil managed to run a worldwide famous band and solo career AT THE SAME TIME. And hitting the charts over and over again. He went from really complex progressive rock songs to deep beautiful ballads, drumming, singing, playing piano, producing. Touring all over the world constantly. And never acquiring that rockstar figure but the complete opposite. He clearly doesn't get the recognition he deserves. But, from a Chilean 27 years old fan (look where his music has reach to) who have been listening him and Genesis since first memories, Phil is one of the greatest of all time. The soundtrack of my life.

I can't argue with anything you said about Phil. I grew up in the 80's listening to Phil Collins and Genesis, my father always had tapes, and eventually CD's, in his truck. We'd listen to their albums while driving around. Some wonderful memories there. As for my favorite song I'd have to said either Dance Into the Light or Wear My Hat. The Dance Into the Light album hit me like a ton of bricks. It was the first album my dad gave me from his collection to have and listen to on my own. Not the most popular or best reviewed albums I guess but it's a pure moment from my teen years that I'll always have a soft spot for. I"m so glad I found your channel and love your work! Happy to be a subscriber!

This video brought me so much happiness. I've always been such a huge fan of Phil Collins ever since I was a kid. In fact, the first cassette tape I ever owned was the 1983 Genesis self-titled album. My love affair for Genesis and Phil Collins has never wavered since. I always felt he never received the respect he deserved, so this video really did give me some affirmation that I wasn't "lame" for enjoying Phil's music. I was finally able to see him live last year and was in tears multiple times throughout the evening. I went to that concert alone. My wife and daughter had no interest in joining me, none of my friends... I'm sure my dad would've gone had he still been alive. But I enjoyed every moment nonetheless. Here's to hoping Genesis adds a second US leg to their 2020 tour. Thanks again for the video. It meant a lot.

I’ve been a devoted fan since 1974. I think his book was forgotten to be discussed. Wow ! Was that great! He turns whatever he touches into gold ! I can’t even pick one song.......there’s just too many !! When Phil took over the singing duties , I loved the band even more because his voice does justice to ALL the songs from the Gabriel era. I love Gabriel. He is a wonderful writer but his singing isn’t anything near the beauty and strength of Phil’s. All of his kids are super talented too ,!! Hs such a cutie, I wish I knew him !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I've been a fan of Genesis (incl. solo careers) since No Son Of Mine was released in the autumn of 1991. That was the first single from the We Can't Dance album. The amount of great music those guys did with the band and solo is so incredible; it seems there is always a song or an album for every mood and every phase in your life. This musical legacy will be part of my life until the day I die. Thank you, Professor, for this portrait of the legendary Phil Collins, who often get so unfairly treated.

Thank you so, so much Professor. That was beautiful! I really appreciate you doing this one. I don’t understand the vitriol that some have for Phil. My first introductions to Phil were Abacab and Face Value. I never looked back. I have the entire Genesis (Peter and Phil) and Phil Collins catalogs. I would just like to mention that as big as he and Peter are, I still love Mike and Tony. Tony Banks is my favorite Genesis member. Anyway, the music that Phil is a part of will last forever. Thank you for saying things like that.
