I had several bass teachers but one good one: he introduced me to the music of James Jamerson. My greatest feat as a bass player was to learn to play Darling Dear - that was when I was 18 or so, so about 40 years ago. 😄 I am still proud that I pulled that off. 😋 Once you learn about James Jamerson you hear his influence everywhere. Thanks for the video and so many new photgraphs! 😮

Thanks, he has been one of my biggest influences since I picked up the bass guitar 18 years ago (at 50!) One thing first; while JJ played on a lot of the songs, you also have to give a lot of credit for Motown's huge influence to Bob Babbitt. He also had many of those hits, and some of those are monster bass recordings! Midnight Train to Georgia, oh, my!!! Both were pretty amazing, techniques and composition, but I think that the biggest thing was how much serious GROOVE oozed out of the two of them. And the synergy with the equally marvelous drummers was part and parcel of it!!! The other thing: If you want to check out JJ at arguably his finest - Home Cookin' with Jr. Walker and the All Stars. Smmmmokin'!!!!!

Love James Jamerson, honestly one of the most influential bassists of all time, such a fantastically melodic player, really enhanced the arrangements of the songs he played on. Would love to see a video from you about Billy Sheehan’s bass playing.

Many thanks to you for posting this video of Motown Icon James Jameson. That funky bass in the songs caused me to love Motown even greater. I could recognize a song by only hearing the bass. Great video.👏👍💯

Great video! James Jamerson inspired many bass players but one in particular was Francis Rocco Prestia. I suggest to buy this book "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" it contains most of James Jamerson's bass lines played by bass players such Pino Palladino, Geddy Lee, Rocco Prestia and many others.

When people list the "Top 5 bassists" top 10, 20 etc. they always forget Jamerson but he is #1 because all those names that get credit like John Paul Jones were influenced by Jamerson more than anyone else.. By the way -the other one who is never listed is the original bassist of Jethro Tull - Glenn Cornick. I'll search your channel to make sure you covered him!!!! Thanks for this one!!!

@@BassFreedom If you do, some might appreciate looking back at a few of these artists again in more depth. Something to keep in mind as you progress in your development as a presence on YT. I've got a pretty good feel for his rhythmic techniques (not that I can play them that well!), but I'd like to find out more about some of those ascending and descending runs he does among other things. Some are very chromatic, some I don't know what in the heck he's doing. But of course it works!

@@nathanwahl9224 I will definitely break down more theory, especially because I’m a teacher who is a online bass educator with my website Bass Freedom - on KZbin at times I try to speak a little more “universal”, but I will be shifting into more theory as more videos roll out! Thanks for your comments. I appreciate you watching 😃🤘

Great video ❤ your bass tone is so similar to his. How did you get that tone? What is your setup?

To be honest, I have a very different set up. I am using normal strings as opposed to flats. I am playing my fender jazz but I would say that I can mimic his sound more in my playing! With muffling the strings, dampening, using my palm. It’s more in the playing than my rig 🤘😃

Correction - its not "Barry" Gordy, its Berry Gordy.

Berry Gordy is also spelt G-O-D. One of the greatest Americans to ever walk this planet. His contribution to American culture and the world can never be overstated. I have a good friend who met him. I constantly remind her of what an honor it is to be in her presence just for having met him.
