I am enrolled in the PGE C.A.R.E program that Discounts my Service and when my Energy use is LOW , they often issue me Energy Credits , sometimes my Entire Bill is $0 and the Next Month is like $10 . I am also Enrolled in EBCP which is a ZERO Emissions Local Power Company , which Currently 100% of power generated is from Renewable sources , but PGE still charges me for Transmission. EBCP also provides 50% Renewable and 25% Renewable options as well. one other FACTOR in California is PGE has Tesla MEGAPACKS at Moss Landing and Ventura County which should help to Balance the Loads better with All the RENEWABLES California has , it still needs to build more MEGAPACK storage in CA , however.

Ricky PLEASE look into researching and possibly getting a "Vertical Geothermal System" good example is Dandelion Energy but there are many... Got a friend the has it here and it cuts the cost of Heating, Cooling and Continuous Warmed hot water (Reduced energy used by 41%).. What we really need is a Green Ecosystem of products From BEVs and Solar to Wind (Harmony VAWT), geothermal, HVAC, Passive housing, Shading and Batteries!!! ~ What we then would need is a smart grid as we will then have Community Renewable Farms!

Depends on your usage and weather but I would say you are likely correct. If you have solar and the sun comes out every day the Powerwall(s) will likely reach capacity. With 1 power wall that is 13 kWh and a limit of drawing 5 kW continuous. During the summer it is likely most of your electrical needs during the day could be met by the solar. So for 10+ hours a day, you may not need any power from the grid or the Powerwall. Also, if you size your solar right you will also have enough excess power to charge powerwall(s) to 100%. But with only 1 powerwall you have the 5 kW draw limit. So things like A/C and ovens may be only partially covered when the grid is up, and unavailable when the grid is down. This limitation is one reason we went with 2 powerwalls. In the summer we can fill them by noon, get credit for sending power back to the grid until 7 pm, and still power the A/C and ovens into the night. For us, solar and powerwalls have dropped out summer power bills by 90%.

Although relatively newer in the maritime world our regulatory bodies make us do all kinds of intricate things to mitigate runaways and internal / external events that would leak to a fire. I'm sure Tesla has some pretty slick hardware for limiting to a event in a single cell of a sub pack but curious to know more.

@@TwoBitDaVinci thanks! Systems we use have a BMS that monitors temp and charging faults but must be independently powered with 24VDC not the rack HV DC 24/7, which in case of power loss must mean a backup battery bank. This way the BMS is always monitoring even if you're not using it. There was a corvus fire in recent years because they shutoff the entire system but didn't disconnect the bank and a thermal runaway led to a fire. One of those scenarios people don't think about until you go through the exercise.

This might be one of the times for a HOA to use its power for good. If there are 160 individual houses that choose to get Tesla Powerwalls, then the $8500 price per PowerWall means the whole setup will cost $1.36M. But if enough people vote and there is a sufficient flat area, and the power grid can connect to every house, then purchasing a single MegaPack would be worth it. A MegaPack would cost the same as ~120 Powerwalls, but its power storage is ~200 times as much. The key is figuring a way to do this with permission and help from the Electric company, since it would likely need to be between the substation and the house meters. A second function might be linking the MegaPack to a computer so that whenever the MegaPack is providing power it sends a message to the computer, which then sends an alert to the HOA customers (the computer just maintains a mailing/messaging list, so the MegaPack doesn't need to). So if a power outage occurs all the Megapack HOA users get notified, so they can turn down their power usage. Similarly when the Megapcak is storing/discharging, a similar app to the current Tesla Powerwall app will let them see how the MegaPack is being used

Food for thought... Just researching and ran into this other product being promoted. Summed up for you: Compared to the Tesla Powerwall, the PowerBloc system has a few key advantages: Larger battery capacity - The PowerBloc can store a full day's worth of energy, more than the 13.5 kWh capacity of a Powerwall. This provides greater energy independence. DC-coupled solar - The Step microconverters connect the solar panels directly to the battery at 400V DC, avoiding conversion losses compared to AC-coupled systems like the Powerwall. Grid-forming inverter - The PowerBloc can power the whole home independently off-grid, unlike the Powerwall which requires grid connection or a backup gateway to power a whole home. Generator integration - The PowerBloc manages seamless blending and switching between solar, battery, generator, and grid unlike Powerwall's limited generator support. Modular scalability - The PowerBloc battery and solar capacity can be easily expanded as needs change, vs the Powerwall's fixed capacity. Advanced energy management - The PowerBloc uses solar forecasting and intelligence to optimize self-consumption, while Powerwall has basic solar self-consumption. So in summary, the PowerBloc provides greater energy independence, efficiency, flexibility and intelligence compared to the Powerwall's more limited off-grid capabilities. But Powerwall is a simpler plug-and-play solution for grid-connected solar storage.

@Two Bit da Vinci - Excellent review of your setup walking through each component while also factoring in your power company. It's very close to the ideal setup I would implement but I'd also want my future EV to be charged overnight from battery storage system. In addition, as you mentioned to also include the ability to charge the battery storage system during the non-solar hours from the grid especially during the overnight hours when the (variable or time of use) electric rates are the cheapest. A possible idea for a future video is comparing or at least reporting on the various battery storage systems available today and highlight some of the features / capabilities they provide. (E.g. really like the idea of it monitoring the weather forecast to predict possible outages and place a priority of charging the battery storage to 100%. Is that a common feature with other battery storage systems?) That would be very helpful for those that do not have access or funds to purchase a Tesla Powerwall or the time to wait for it to be installed.

I don't want to put a current Powerwall 2 onto my solar panels in the UK at the moment. I think that the current Powerwall will last 10 to 15 years. At the end of that time it will just about pay for itself and not make any profit in the UK. When the new 4680 tabless batteries (just announced on Battery Day Sept 2020) are being used on Powerwall 3 then I expect that the batteries will last 20 to 30 years. This is because the batteries will not heat up so much because they have tabs for the whole length of the electrodes in the batteries. Heat reduces the battery life. I expect that the new battery will come out in about 2 years time and will be also be bigger (maybe 20 KWh instead of 13.5 KWh which will increase the battery life further even if you don't need the full 20KWh) for a slightly lower price. The new battery will cost tesla 56% less than the old one per KWh. With all these improvements it will then make more economic sense to install one. I would not wait for Powerwall 4 because I will have to wait too long and Powerwall 3 will be good enough. Powerwall 4 will probably be the battery that will do V2G ((vehicle to grid) the battery will last so long that you can use it to buy and sell electricity on the grid (and put it in your car) and make a profit without worrying that your battery will need to be replaced quickly). However for those of you who have a Powerwall 2 installed already you will only need to replace the battery box when the batteries run out. You will not have to replace all the wiring etc. So the cost will not be as bad as a complete new system.

Also one more thing is that now you have battery backup, take a look at Ohmconnect, if you haven’t already. You can definitely make some extra $$$ there by letting them control your Powerwall and some smart devices. It’s only good for SoCal edison and pge utility people. So I’m not sure if SD qualifies... for me, in the summer, we’ve earned about $70 a month, but that drops down in the fall and winter. Thankyou for that information. The battery can NOT handle hi amp products. Which is where the main power usage comes from. As you said it is just a back up system to light amperage power lines. I have just commented on another post of yours. So my question is. For me it costs $12,000.00 AU dollars to install a tesla battery system which is a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery system ( group of batteries). All this just to back up the lighter amperage power supply. How long financially will it take just to get your money back from this system. I have a 6.5kwh solar panel system had it for over 4 years. I have around a $300.00AU credit after that time I don't have a battery because I generate 3 times what I use. Funny how now I only Get 9.5cent a kwh and I have to pay 29.5 Cents plus $1.10 per day connection fee. We pay for these systems but the energy companies and the Solar makers and suppliers are making the lions share. Oh I have a solar hot water system too, 315ltr twin solar panels, yet I watch the power light come on. I have invested $15,000.00 AU I am unlikely to see a full return. Oh my contract has been altered in their favour three times. Where does the greed stop? I say, all these videos are from people making money from it! That is why they are smiling. And I live in the Sunshine State!

I think for tesla, it is impossible to get it now based on the statement they released on the website. They already reach the 20% cap dev allowance for SGIP. So you have to find other companies to install the battery if you want SGIP, but need to act fast, it is almost the end of step 6.

@12:42 CT stands for "current transformer", it is way to measure the current going through a conductor/wire, and if you find the current this way and you know what is the voltage (120 or 240 v) then you can calculate the power and energy being consumed by that circuit/room/appliance.

Google say a power wall installation is between 9.6K. and 16.6K. My electric bill is about $100 a month. A salesman told me that I could not use my EV rate to charge the battery for the first 2 years if I installed the Tesla battery. That would imply that after the first 2 years, I could. The person in charge of the solar program for my utility concluded that they had a rate structure set up so that If someone did use the EV rate to charge and the Peak rate to discharge, they would need to change the batteries shortly after they broke even. Questions: Can the battery be programmed to fully discharge from 5 to 8 PM? If I used my solar to fully charge at an off-peak time and emptied the battery into the grid at a 3 hour peak time, how much difference between off-peak and peak do I need to make the project worthwhile?

There are videos that show the power generated by month. There is less power but it is still enough to power most of your daily use. What happens is that you build up credits during the peak season and those credits are used during the winter. So you net bill for the year is close to zero.

@TwoBitDaVinci

the AC is not backed up... if the grid is online and i have power, the powerwall can actually support the entire load and will run my house from 4-9PM, so my usage from grid would be 0. but its not in the backup panel, so if the grid goes down, it wont run. weird, but the reasonging is that such a huge load is too close to the max output for the powerwall so they dont want you to just blow its entire capacity in like 2 hours if there was a real emergency.

Hi, in Italy they're basically allowing you to upgrade to Solar + Batteries for free due to new "economy boost" law, so I will surely do that. However, the downside of it is that if you use this deal to get all this for free, you can't sell back energy to the grid (but afaik, energy sale price in italy is way way low so...) In the end, my question is: how much do you make in the USA for selling your energy back to the grid with solar ? Is is something very high ?

Since it's a publicly traded company and many utility companies are complete scammers, it will never happen unless it somehow benefits them more than us. Battery rental will happen in the future but solely to the benefit of the shareholders, followed by the energy company, followed by the environment, then the owner of said battery system.
