I only own a couple of SAKs, and to be honest, the only one I ever carry is the Rangergrip 78. I don't EDC it, but will have it in my kit for trekking in the woods. the main reason I like it is the very large, and effective saw that comes on it. it is much larger, and cuts even more aggressively than the best of my Leatherman tool saws. if I had not gotten used to carrying two Leatherman tools I might carry the Rocktool with a single Leatherman. but truth is I often need to hold the nut on the back of something while tightening the bolt from the front. this need is actually why, in 1985, I bought the second Leatherman PST while I was in Basic training. I was lucky that my buddy had one as well, or we would have been stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Love the Gerber armbar - scout. The long indent nail gap at the end of the saw removes fishooks like the end of a SAK fish scaler. The ONE thing I really needed a pliers multitool for outdoors. Saw scales fish better than a scaler to boot and the burnt orange make it easy to find and looks gorgeous. I always have a SAK Classic on my keys for the scissors and to this day NO one makes scissors like Victorinox and it really frees up my multitool carry which used to revolve around (often inferior) scissors.

I picked up the Rocktol based on your review and have been carrying it with me this week. So far I've used it to open a couple of cans to make chili, replaced a damaged outlet, installed a kitchen sink, swapped out a light fixture, and cut up a couple of boxes. For twenty bucks there really isn't anything to complain about. I was gifted the Gerber dual-force at Christmas. It's a fairly decent multi-tool. I quit carrying Swiss Army Knives 20 plus years ago because there are much better options available.

I've never needed to upgrade beyond my pioneer / pioneer x for urban EDC and Huntsman for the woods when I travel abroad to be honest. It is especially important for me that the blade isn't locking since I keep traveling to Europe quite often and even if I instinctively pack my leatherman, I rarely carry it since locked blades are frowned upon over there. I think this video and the one Jon Gadget made definitely highlight that Victorinox needs to start innovating again, since a bunch of competitors are at their heels now, whereas 10 years ago they were miles ahead of the rest of the bunch.

@@dualsportedc Not sure who told you that. Our kitchen knives are the same as the rest of the world. You're just not allowed to carry them on the street without a valid reason, such as being a chef travelling to and from work, as they are a fixed blade usually longer than the permitted length. Personally the medium sized Victorinox(91mm?) is more than enough knife I need to carry everyday.

If Gerber doesn't give any specification about the steel it means probably that they're not able to communicate about it with pride : something between 3Cr and 5Cr ? I had the V1 of the Cork and gave it to a friend, went back to a SAK with great pleasure. What I'd expect from Gerber would be better steel, better scissors, and better ergos. One of my friends got the Fox Vulpis, and it's a nice multitool which, however, remains inferior to the Victorinox despite the very high quality steel.

Although it’s too big for edc in the pocket or keychain/belt pouch, I have always preferred the SAK Swiss Champ because of its versatility in having most of the tools offered in various models. I keep mine in a backpack. I also have a leatherman sidekick that was a gift and works well. I plan to buy the SAK Ranger 78 or 79, probably the one that has the corkscrew because I don’t need another Phillips and the corkscrew is versatile for untying knots.

All I’ve been wanting is a few good quality folders. One that takes box cutter blades, with a choil so you can choke up (maybe maybe a version with out it.) And a slip joint version as it would be perfect for some areas. Im shocked no one has yet tbh? And I’ve been Wanting a one handed opening Swiss Army knife (3” blade.) or knife styled like it for so long now. The Swiza’s are hard to get in my area. And other options are two handed. The Boker Tech tools would be amazing they are a modern take on the SAK and just need a stud! Edit: isn’t the Rocky just a handle from a leather man?

I'll stick with my RangerGrip 79. The last times Gerber impressed me was with the LMFII Infantry, the Prodigy, and the Strongarm. I wasn't impressed with the Suspension which I found in the street at work and tried it for free. I use SAK scissors a lot, most often to clip away dead skin that hangs loose by the cuticles so as not to tear them off, yeow. The only thing I ordered from a Gerber store lately, an ebay one, are some Tactical Tailor MALICE Clips to upgrade some of my existng gear with.

I've had an armbar for a year and change now. It stays in my bag along with a 1/4 driver kit. The driver alone has come in handy enough to justify the cost. I added a small clip to a ring on the armbar to secure it on my pocket, but mostly it just stays in my bag. The metal on the blade is terrible. Might as well be aluminum; it dulls after any task more extreme than opening envelopes and cutting tape on packages. Seriously, plan on needing to resharpen if you open a plastic clamshell package.

Steel and sturdines are way over Gerber's - corksrew has never seen a vinebotle, but serves as a coat/backpack hanger "on the go" while camping. Warranty has no any small (font 3) text. G'day Aaron, yeah, "no name" blade steel in particular, is a worry, .... though, I do like that this one has fewer tools, ..... and those I'd actually use. Saw, albeit on the short side, ...... tick If you're gonna have one at all, ... a magnetic bit driver with a longer shank....... tick. A locking "in line" awl is a winner, ........ well, locking everything is highly desirable IMO. Mind you, an unlocked bit driver is often useful @ 90 deg or other angle. Btw; given their inherent nature, i.e. the blocky, and very non-symmetrical, shape of multitools, how about a ratchet driver. I've seen some very, very small such mechanisms around in recent years ..... just a thought. Incidentally, one item I never see/hear mentioned, is a Victorinox belt clip. Clips onto just about any material as well, say track pants for example, or even boxer shorts and briefs .......... if that's your MO; .....sure, nudists will need a strap, or lanyard, of some description, regardless ...... but hey, even then, it can still be made to work ; ) Seriously though, ...... the beauty of it, on belt, is .... easy, (but very secure), mount/dismount design and the knife/multitool simply dangles vertically in the pocket on a small spring clip, i.e. the weight is on the belt, .... and without a more bulky holster, ... you hardly know it's there. (In fairness I don't mind a good holster either). It's great for keys also, not sure one would be carry'n those around in a holster ; ) Looks quite classy too IMO, sure beats the carabiner I was using previously anyway ; ) Not unreasonably expensive either, think I paid 20-25-ish knicker AUD some years back, (around 12-15 USD). So..... obviously, ..... I'm a fan, ..... main point is, after all that, maybe others would be too. Cheers Duke.

Also, you can store extra bit in it. Also I think Armbar got way too much hate from reviewers for non locking screwdriver. Yeah, it would be nice, but still capable tool for many.

So, it seems Gerber is still making their knives out of genuine "Butter Steel", which keeps an edge about as well as a stick of butter. This is why I haven't bought a Gerber knife in the last 25 years. Gerber hasn't made a good knife since the late 1970s or early 1980s. I still have one of the old Gerber sheath knives I bought in the late 1970s that has a blade of some kind of tool steel with a metal handle that has a non-slip grey coating. Now THAT is a good knife! It has been used to gut and skin a huge number of deer and elk (not just mine, but those of hunting partners and friends who have called me to help when they had game to process). I still use that Gerber knife occasionally, though I have a number of custom and semi-custom knives to use now. The Gerber knives I've bought since that old metal handled beauty haven't been worth the powder to blow them to hell. They sit in some box somewhere in my garage and I could give a damn about them. Unless their steel quality changes, I'll never buy another Gerber knife. Gerber has nice knife and tool designs, but unless the blade steel is right, they aren't worth a damn.

I don’t like gerber.. their warranty did get me another knife after I emailed them like 11 times telling them how crap they are.. and Swiss Army knife is the same, they are gimmicky. A staple for most of us growing up but besides the blade and tweezers and ( tooth pick ) aka charging port cleaner, the awl and drivers are helpful, the key ring they include as a tool and the hook that they say can carry a grocery bag is a waste, when they cost 20 for the cheapest at most use the scissors for nose hairs, and way up in price, I don’t think a 15$ price jump is justified for a single tool unless it’s for your heavy duty work tool, which SAK isn’t it’s light task oriented.

Id avoid the Rocktool. Too much of a Leatherman copy, like theyve just ripped an arm off a Charge. Clever toolset but at least SAK and Gerber come up with thier own stuff.

I've had more Gerbers fail than any other knife I've owned that wasn't a cheap beater. I won't buy them anymore. I own at least 10 different SAKs across all the kits I have and EDC a Compact as my secondary. Btwn SAK and Leatherman, I mean, really, Gerber is never the better option.

Best bit driver, no argument here. Was hoping to hear that 2.0 was better than their typical pot steel and poor quality. IMO, Gerber has good ideas and poor execution.

@@gideonstactical If I remember well the V1 of the Armbar used 5Cr, maybe it's the same, but from what it is said in this test I would also say it might be 3Cr or 4Cr like we can see on some Kershaw models nowadays. 7Cr or 8Cr should perform better no ?

The Armbar’s bottle opener becomes loose too easy, then the tool becomes unstable. Even if you tighten it, after a while it is not reliable. I had two already, and will not go for them again. Quality is simply inferior.

The thing that annoys the hell out of me is gerbers blade steel on there lower and mid range knifes and tools. I don't understand why people still buy there chinesium garbage knifes. I do like the arm bar design.
