In today's time we call that set-up insulated coverall's , You know a lot of times hunters and explorers slept just in what they were wearing . I think a lot of people have forgotten that little fact. They didn't carry tents and sleeping bags and a million items , just raw basics They built their temporary shelters and used the animals they killed for food ,shelter ,and a paycheck. Most trappers didn't even have a gun , most people didn't have guns . Why ? They couldn't afford them. Much less the bullets and powder. Almost everyone carried a tomahawk or big butcher knife. From there they made spears and bows . Others used their farming equipment as weapons pitchforks ,cycles ,corn knives etc. Peace.

There used to be a version with 2 separate legs,used it on stag on rebro stations in B.A.O.R. in 80's.German winters on top of a hill were very cold. Getting in and out of a sleeping bag was noisy and cumbersome when checking genny and you got cold again. Perfect answer. Sargent -Majors thought you could live in combats and woolly pully in -5c temperature.

@Humble Trekker That is a cool piece of kit which I hadn't even heard of until this video. It's better than a U.S. Army Ranger roll, which is just enough to keep you from freezing to death while being uncomfortable as hell. I currently use a pop-up, hooped Bivvy ( comes in a compression sack to fit better in ruck ) and carry a couple of wool blankets. My 'padding" is a couple of heavy duty, large contractor bags that I stuff with dead leaves and pine straw ( ever abundant on the ground in the woods ) on top of which I lay a vinyl shower curtain liner, put my bivvy atop that, cover up with the blankets, put my chest rig and pistol belt near my feet, cradle my AK ( I also use paracord to secure a tarp above the bivvy for a rain fly ) and that takes up the entire bottom 3rd of my U.S. GI MOLLE 2 large combat rucksack ( which is a lot of space, I'm sure you're aware how big those rucks are, 4000 cubic inch main ruck with 2 500 cubic inch sustainment pouches MOLLEd on the sides). This looks way more efficient and effective, With this, it seems I can carry 1 blanket ( already would be dressed for the weather ), my bivvy and tarp, and it would pack way better. Where do you get them and how much is a good value/retail in $ U.S. Dollars? Thanks for posting this, seems like a better option than what I'm using now. With this, a wool blanket, a bivvy, and dressed for the weather, about how cold of a temperature would you be reasonably warm and comfortable as you can be if you aren't rucking a military modular sleep system ?

Just got mine today! However, this one is labeled or being sold as Austrian sniper sleeping bag. Looks to be virtually identical. Double zipper design allows for use as huge quilt that could cover two adults easily. Mine was temporary on sale for $35 US! Many of the reviews are five stars, and seems popular with hunters who sit in tree stands. Very high-quality zippers not super lightweight for warmth factor, but it’s amazingly practical. Going to use mine inside of Gore-Tex bivi and when temps drop below freezing will attempt use as layering option pairing with Czech mummy style ECWS synthetic fill bag alone rated to sub zero temps. Found mine on sportsman’s guide. Truly wish you the best of luck in journey getting this item and ultimately putting it to use in the field. Looks to be easily customizable for instants adding hook and loop or snaps to adapt cotton or even fleece liners maybe even wool if you like. I’ll be lining mine with surplus Belgium cotton mummy sleeping bag liners that use hook and loop. I really like the multiple uses and possible modularity with other equipment. Excellent idea!

Used to love these in the late 80's, number one swap with the Bundeswehr only as a summer bag. The British army bag was the weapon of choice on Osnabrück training area. Also I dont remember the heavy wheezing it seems to engender but I suspect I would be having a cornerary trying to be that bendy these days to!

Just got my bag out to show my daughter before going on cub camp. Had it since 89 when I was in Scouts. Mine has the waterproof material at the front too.Ive always used the waterproof hood bit as a pillow by stuffing it with clothes but a modern inflatable pillow would work marvellously.

I've owned one of those for 13 years. A lot of people mistakenly call them German sniper sleeping bags. I have also heard them referred to as German tank crew sleeping bags which seems more realistic. They're not very warm once the weather starts to get a bit cold. Nice vid buddy.

Back in the early 90s, which is when I bought one, they were known as reconnaissance sleeping bags which also makes sense. I agree that they're not the warmest, they have a diamond pattern stitching which obviously creates a lot of places where body heat can escape and cold can enter. I slept outside in it in Summer / Autumn on exercise in Germany, I was in the British Army but liked German kit which I could get cheap over there.
@steezydan85434 жыл бұрын
Last bit of kit I've been able to buy was a belgian jigsaw rain coat + pants from Varusteleka. Here in Canada we barely have any European surplus and, to be honest, most of the stuff we get in the surplus stores are less than 30 years old or repros of WW2 stuff. Anyways, that bivvy bag looks astounding. Always fun getting gear that just works.

Yup had one of those for 30 years too. 1961 issue. Bought it from an ex-Para running an army surplus store in Lancaster in '93. Pull the sleeves inside zip it over your head keeps everything out. Just stupidly heavy compared to today's kit.

@@verysurvival I happened to look out of curiosity on eBay and found the liner only. I watched it for a few days and nobody bid on it. I put a minimal bid on for shits and giggles, I won it thought it was still pricey. You don't find these often any more. I heard in a similar video Israel made a very similar item. Almost exact. I've looked at these several times over the decades. The reason I never bought one was the weight. To heavy to carry very far. If I'm using a truck or a mule to carry my gear, it will be even heavier and luxurious.

For reference I used to carry a down sleeping bag and a snugpak ionosphere so my shelter and sleep system was very light and i have to say transitioning to using this bag was great, you dont have to carry waterproofs if you bring it and you can carry an ultralight bivvy bag as it is already very nice and toastie(providing it isnt winter) honestly it's a cracking but of kit that you adjust to carrying, I'd suggest atleast having it in your arsenal

No Goretex means miserably damp. Doesn't work with a sparate sleeping bag? Not good in the cold. (In the U.S. sleep system, up to three bags can be placed one inside the other.) This isn't a sleeping bag. It's a badly designed jacket and pants. A poncho makes more sense for shedding the rain. A poncho is more compact and can be put on in seconds.

It isn't Goretex anyway, it dates back to the 70s before Goretex. It wasn't standard issue in the Bundeswehr, just for reconnaissance troops and the like.
@octaviussludberry90164 жыл бұрын
It's rubberised so doesn't need Goretex. Also,they're cool as fuck and they can be used with another bag. I've put a Snugpak inside and slept comfortably at -8.
