People don't appreciate the aviation movies because it's not realistic. We barely get movies in the first place so why hammer it down when it's geared to bring in a bigger audience and not just aviation weebs like myself. Now we will wait another 5 years for the next one to come out.

+Mills117 Actually it's Irish propaganda, as it was made in Ireland by Irish people, to make a point about how Ireland was neutral in the war. The rest of the short film shows them have a fight on the ground and the Brit capture the German, lead him out to some soldiers only to find out they're magically in Ireland all of a sudden and both under arrest. There's a smug little note at the end about how many of the POWs stayed there at the end of the war and became citizens.

so true. is impossible at so low alti and so high speed to any pilot do that and expect to land alive, much less without no one injury. also....okay that spitfires had better maneuverability, but in a dive i really doubt that a spit could keep up with a bf 109 which have a so much highter dive speed

Actually I AM a pilot with lots and lots of time logged, some of it of a contentious nature. But I don't have any comments about this movie, I just saw the clip and then checked the comments to see if it was worth watching....I gather it isn't. I will say that the Spitfire pulled what looked liked a 9g turn at one point....and that's bs. Can't be worse then Mission of Honor/Hurricane though....can it?

In movie dogfights, there's always a scene where a guy gets shot down and his friend is watching and screaming in agony to dial in the tragedy of it all. I imagine in real air combat, you've got too much adrenaline and you're focusing on too many things to really emotionally process something like that until afterwards.

Just like in movies about infantry. Someone always listens to the last wish of a dying friend. And suddenly God creates a bubble of peace around them so that no one will be able to break those five minutes of holding hands in the center of the slaughter. Even the sounds of the battle are cut out so that they don't get in the way of whispering

The comments are overstating it. The only horribly unrealistic thing depicted here is surviving that air-to-air crash and rolling spin. There'd be no way out of that, no surviving it, no avoiding going in nose-first, no miracles. But everything up to that point is perfectly fine.

I remember when we were in DEFTAC school we were taught the easiest way to break a guns solution was to do a very high g snap barrel roll. Not only would you break their guns solution, you would cause an overshoot and now you would be in a position to out rounds through THEIR canopy, The other way to break a guns solution was to roll left, pull quick pos G and then stuff the stick all the way forward and push max neg G. Although this works, hard neg G's are very painful and can literally burst blood vessels in your eyes. More than once we came back from DEFTAC hops with badly bloodshot eyes.

I loved this. I think we'd all like to experience the feeling of being in this situation and lots have commented how unrealistic this film is... However, put you in the actual situation and you'd find the average dogfight unrealistic to the extreme, fantastical even. So I welcome this. I just wish someone would limit their rounds to approximately fourteen seconds of firepower.

You don't need to put yourself in the situation of the pilots, WW2 was ended 70 years ago, plus people could put more money in the film and make it realistic, why they should get as much money as the really realistic movies that cost much more to make, just think of it: some guy gets same profit off a movie with low graphics but did pay less and did not work as much on the graphics as the realistic movie makers did, isn't it just not fair to get as much money as a realistic film when you just didn't work enough on it? We should just forget about world war 2.

Pretty much like the action on IL-2 Cliffs of Dover - Blitz (on Steam) flying on the TWC Campaign server, except folks try to avoid colliding with enemy aircraft, though accidents still happen. Running out of ammo (16 seconds worth on the Spitfire and 18 seconds worth on the Hurricane) when a victim is a "cannot possibly miss" target is one of the most frustrating things many have experienced in the game.

And some Spirited shown had the 6-on-a-side exhaust stacks, rather than the fishtail triple-ejector stacks on Mk I/Mk ll Spits..noticed that right off..Nothing's really perfect. So sweet! But the reality looks different. The German Messerschmidt dives considerably faster, so that the British pilot has no chance of chasing him in this way. And the only situation I know where an opposing pilot was hunted down in this way was a Mustang pilot, that of Hermann Graf (the first fighter pilot in the world to score 200 kills, 212 in total, died in 1988) was involved in a fight with several Mustangs in the defense of the Reich. He shot down 2of them. Then his guns failed, so that the 3rd Mustang he knocked down with a flap of its wing on the enemy's cockpit. After this, his machine was also so badly damaged that he had to jump off immediately. He got caught in his oxygen supply and was torn down with it. It was only shortly before the impact that he was able to free himself and deploy the parachute just in time. Fortunately, he was soon found in a swampy area and taken to the hospital. Then he received an absolute flight ban from the German air force command. It should be mentioned that this man is one of the top 15 fighter pilots (all German of course) of all time. These 15 men, together, shot down almost 3,000 enemies. If you want to watch a film about the life of a real fighter pilot, then I recommend the "Star of Africa", about the life of Hans-Joachim Marseille. He scored 158 victories, all in the west. And Marseille is not even one of the "unrivaled 15" ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXK4h5qgiZ2FbK8

The dogfighting scenes are very well done, but the ending is a bit over the top for me. My question is why isn't anyone doing a remake of the film "Reach for the Sky"? (i.e. pilot Douglas Bader). They could weave his INCREDIBLE story into the battle of Britain and have all kinds of cool dogfight scenes. The sequel would be about his capture, escapes and recaptures and his time in Colditz prison. They could end it with the glider actually flown out of the prison / castle.

Steve. Today history is written by the nation with the largest movie audience. To sell in America the whole story would have to be rewritten with an American Douglas Bader.

@@johnwilletts3984 "Dunkirk" actually did well at the box office in America so I'm not sure what you're getting at; i.e. I don't think America was mentioned once in "Dunkirk". As well as it did, Bader's story would do far better because it 's so compelling.

A realistic film about DB wouldn't show him in a good light. He claimed to have shot down five Germans in one fight over Dunkirk...a feat unwitnessed by those with him and not recorded on his gun camera. He left the airfields he was meant to protect unguarded while going off chasing personal glory, and once ordered 3 squadrons to turn back because of a technical problem with his own aircraft...he wouldn't hand over control to anyone else because he was an egomaniac. Then he was instrumental in pulling strings to get Sir Hugh Dowding sacked as head of Fighter Command after Dowding had won the Battle of Britain. If you were scoring him for his qualities as a commander, you'd give him a 10 for leadership (his personal courage was an inspiration to those around him) and a 0 for decision-making.

No I believe not. Those Bf 109s are E models, you can tell by looking at the horizontal stabilizer, it is externally braced. Under idle conditions (favorable tail wind, NOT IN COMBAT WITH THROTLE TO THE FIREWALL) The 109E could have JUST make Ireland on a one way trip. The E model only had a range of 640km. On my charts, if the 109 took of from a costal air field in France, it would have barely made the coast. So it is movie plot fuel.

I don't know, I've looked at WWII aircraft a lot and they had a much higher velocity than that. The German MG-FF/M might fire at a velocity like that if it were damaged, but that is still very unlikely and the machine guns would never do that. I think they were trying to overexaggerate the difficulty of aiming to make the scene seem more dramatic.

Very true..why you have to set your reflex gunsight for range, size of enemy plane, any deflection correcting, etc..or you'll surely exhaust your ammo supply. Multiple guns on those planes could only carry just so much. Weight factors to be considered too..And also knowing pretty much where your gun patterns harmonize/converge out ahead, along with the gunsight reticle..

Fun fact. What you saw on the Spitfire at the end, the half shot down painted on the fuselage. That was not the case with the Germans. Either you had a witness to the shooting down or he didn't count. And yet the top 62 Fighter pilots in the world are Germans with hundreds of kills. And that although many of their kills were probably not counted.

You need to do some more research. The German Jagdfliegers over-claimed like every other pilot in the war. During the Battle of Britain the ratio of German claims to actual British losses was worse than 2-1. The Germans did have lots of high scoring Aces, but their victory totals are a function of the fact their opponents were flying mostly inferior types... i.e. Soviets... and the Soviets had abysmal tactics and many aircraft did not have radio communications. Against Western opponents with up to date aircraft the Jagdfliege did much worse.
@ironeagel9235

@@74MikeBike But you know that many of the great German aces, such as Mölders, Galland, Marseille and many others have won most of their kills against Western Allies? The top 64 Pilots in the World are Germans. This also includes many from WW1.

The spit could out turn the 109 but couldn't retain energy well nor could it operate functionally for fighting at higher altitudes and the speed I reckon that spit was turning would have ripped apart, the 109 also would have destroyed that spit due to the 20 mm cannons
@havefun4133

Do you just want to try to speak like a teacher or smth ? There is a lot of largely more irrealistic points in this hollywood clip lol. By the way, "The spit"? which spit? and which 109? there were 24 spit models. And many 109s. They had different energy retention. And energy retention also depends of a lot of external factor than the aircraft model. Like angle of attack, speed, alt, fuel, dammage taken, ammuntion left, bombs left, etc .. Then an aircraft could have the better energy situation in a situation and not in an other. It seems more complicate than just "109 had better energy retention than the Spit", specificly for 2 aircraft which were very similar as their pilots said. And I heard the spit had a very nice enegry retention, so who should I trust? Sorry for my english.

@@havefun4133 The Messerschmidt, dive and climb faster and had the better weapons. The spit (at 1940), is better in other maneuvers and a bit faster. The rest, depends on the pilot. And that's normally a point for the Germans in 1940...

@@havefun4133 Well, the 109 in the video just came out from a dive, and the spitfire was either climbing or not flying particularly fast, and then did a hard right turn to chase the 109. There is no world where the spitfire catches that 109 in that situation, not in the short term.

Great film with amazing visuals. Crazy how the full film is only 10 minutes long, yet it's one of my favorites to watch. These smaller, more unpopular films need more attention. Sure, it's unrealistic. But it's a movie, not a documentary. If it's a movie meant to entertain and portray in an entertaining manner, who cares if it's unrealistic? They did great on the models themselves too! Don't crap on a movie because it ain't up to your standards, comment-section-'historians'. I've flown hours in IL-2 Sturmovik and FSX along with other games like WarThunder, but this film was never meant to be fully realistic, it was meant to entertain. There is a mighty large difference between "Entertaining" and "Simulating". If you don't appreciate the 'unrealism', find a documentary elsewhere. Trying to make yourself look like an expert over a low-budget movie, that many involved worked hard on with what little they were given, makes you look careless and ungrateful. Appreciate their efforts, try not to look for what you consider 'mistakes'.
