The Battle of France (May 10 - June 25, 1940) was a stunning and rapid German victory over France and its Allies, resulting in the fall of France in just six weeks. This defeat was marked by the Blitzkrieg, a German military strategy that combined fast-moving infantry, tanks, and airpower to overwhelm and outmaneuver the enemy.
France, despite having one of the largest armies in Europe and a strong defensive position with the Maginot Line, was caught off guard by Germany’s tactical innovation. The French High Command expected a repeat of World War I’s static trench warfare and focused heavily on their fortifications along the Franco-German border. However, Germany avoided these defenses by launching an invasion through the Ardennes Forest, a region the French considered impassable for a large force. This allowed German forces to bypass the Maginot Line and encircle French and British troops.
Once the German forces punched through at Sedan, the French lines crumbled rapidly. French leadership was divided and slow to react, and their forces were ill-prepared to deal with the speed and coordination of the German attack.
The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) played a crucial role in the defense, but they were quickly overwhelmed. With the collapse of French defenses, British troops were forced to retreat to Dunkirk, where over 300,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated in a massive rescue effort known as Operation Dynamo.
