My mom was 7 years old standing on the Budapest Margaret Bridge when German troops marched across as if on parade. She cheered because she said at the time it looked neat seeing the soldiers marching. Her nanny grabbed her arm and angrily told her to stop, and told her this is not a good thing. My dad told me not long after the German invasion is when the allies began to carpet bomb. British and Canadians by night and the Americans by day. He remembers before each bombing the railroad would pull all locomotives out of the Ferencvaros marshalling yard and put them on sidings in the surrounding neighborhoods. Thats how everyone knew the bombers were coming.

That's how everyone knew the bombers were coming, if they somehow did not hear the air raid announcement on radio and the blasting of air raid sirens! I live in Budapest, 2 minutes walking distance from one of the 3 main railway stations, yet I am not able to see, if any locomotive is leaving... The pulling out of locomotives as an air raid warning seems to be more an anecdote. According to several written reports, the first sign of an air raid was usually a radio announcement, that there is the danger of an air raid in the south of Hungary. Usually 10-20 minutes after this the air raid sirens would go go off in Budapest. Those, who could afford, left the inner city upon the radio announcement (not everybody could just leave anytime, it was still business as almost usual, you could not simply walk out of your job...), the rest could only take shelter, when the official warning was given. Somehow the carpet bombing of civilian tartgets is up to now only considered a war crime, when the germans did it. When it was done by the british and americans, it is just collateral damage...

My father, who served in the Hungarian army, told me of one of these ceremonial greatings. When the Germans entered, his unit greeted them at "present arms" with a flower in their gun barrels as a sign of peace. He said they knew they would not be able to fight them successfully. @@HistoryHustle i had posted on a prior video where I mentioned he was at the battle of Ercsi crossing and fought in the Szekesvehervar theatre. I think I mentioned he was captured a few times by the Russians and escaped from a Russian POW camp the day before he was supposed to be hung. He killed a russian guard, escaped and was found by the British 4 days later. His description of the Ercsi crossing was exactly as was described in the book Battle of Budapest. He told of the bombing raids on the refineries around Szekesfehervar and individual skirmishes against russian troops. Unfortunately, as a kid i didn't ask too many questions. I was 17 when he told me of Ercsi and his prison escape. Other stories i heard in passing when he and others exchanged war stories. If anything else comes to mind, I'll let you know.

@@njbobf Hello! There were no oil refineries around Székesfehérvár, but your dad could see the refineries built on Csepel Island. These are very close to Ercsi approx. 6-7 miles. The Shell-Csepel refinery was built on the island, the Fanto refinery located in Budapest on the Soroksár road. (I have an original Kriegsmarine drum with a Shell-Csepel drum cap. Big and useless, but a true relic for me. :) ) Székesfehérvár was one of the most important railway junctions in western Hungary, between two large lakes, in a swampy well-protected place. The last defendable place was in front of the small but valuable oil fields of western Hungary. There were huge battles for this area like Operation Konrad 2 and 3 to relive the capital, and the so-called last German attack in the war the Spring Awakening for securing the oil fields. My whole family lived here during the war, I heard a lot of stories from my grandparents. (sorry for the spellings or bad wording, I'm currently struggling with covid, I'm not in top shape right now)

I'm English. We won the war on our own because we were smarter and tougher than anyone else. Not really :) I've always wanted to know more about what WW2 was like for the people of other nations and how it's looked back on after the events. There's a lot of pride in England because we defied Hitler from the start and were victorious at the end. Our role has been heavily mythologised and sometimes patriotically distorted. I don't blame other countries for just putting the whole episode behind them, especially those shamed by defeat and/or compromised by fighting on both sides. I'm a fan of your channel Stefan, because you tell me more about all of those European nations. Maybe you could expand into how the war is remembered in different countries some day?

On the other hand, every historical discussion on this topic concludes that the hungarian government and people overwhelmingly were pro-german and there were no real opportunity and/or desire to surrender to the soviets. The dream plan was that the government should surrender to the British. The reality that Hungary would leave Germany was non existent.

This is very controversial! First: Hungary was not even part of the Axis power, like Germany, Italy or Japan. They were just a vasal of Germany and not really an ally! They have their own wrested interest! Hungary want only redraw the border again, because of the Trianon treaty of 1920. Hungary had lost 72% of its former territory! They had territorial claims against Romania, Ukraine, Serbia and Slovakia! Thats why they sought the help of the Germans! Thats all! This is the truth!

There are some inaccuracies at the begining. The Germans were not expecting any Hungarian assistance at the begining of Operation Barbarossa, actullay they were more in favor to exclude the Hungarians from the whole operation. But on the 26th June, unidentified bomber planes without any official insignias bombed the city of Kassa. The nationality of the perpetrators are still debated until nowadays (although later Cyrillic writing was found on the dropped bomb shells), but probably they were soviet bombers who missed their target and originally wanted to bomb Spisska Nova Ves in Slovakia. After receiving the news on the bombing, governor Horthy declared war on the USSR on the same day, since he was afraid that after deafeating the USSR, Slovakia and Romania who were already participating the military operations on the eastern front, would get back some territories Hungary managed to retrieve in the earlier years what she lost originally after the first world war.

Well, it's a pity that Horthy didn't have his revolver with him on the 18th of March 1944. One might be inclined to dismiss his statement as pure bragging but considering he previously had to sit through an hour-long Hitler's rant, maybe there is some truth in it. This invasion had catastrophic consequences for Polish diplomat, social worker and activist Henryk Sławik and his operation of helping Jewish (and other) refugees escape the German rule through Hungary. Sławik went underground and was training to continue his work in secret, with help of like-minded Hungarian friends, including József Antall, but was arrested in July 1944. He didn't inform on his colleagues and was eventually murdered in Mauthausen. His wife survived the Ravensbrück camp and was reunited after the war with their daughter, hidden by the Antall family.

My friend! it was not the Germans who were in trouble then, but much sooner. With the French or Trianon, where two-thirds of the country was stolen from the Hungarians. Look at the size of Hungary in the 1800s and see how small it is now. This is a disgrace. The Hungarian people did not deserve this. Until 1867 Hungary was just a colony of the Habsburg Empire. Only between 1867-1918 Hungary ruled over Slovakia Transylvania and Croatia, all majority slavic and romanian regions, as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, not as an independent country. Slovakia Transylvania and Croatia never wanted to be ruled by Hungary and they liberated themselves in 1918 after just 50 years of hungarian occupation.

@@supermario8416 It depends on where we look and count. There was a so-called conquest in 895 AD. At that time the so-called Hungarian horde occupied the Carpathian Basin. If you observe the line of the Carpathians, it was already the border of Hungary. What you’re talking about was the monarchy for half a hundred years. Unfortunately, the fact is that the past is written by the winners and thus lies to everyone that the one who was defeated was at fault .....

My grandpa was about 10 years old; they ran from Russian fighters to adhoc shelters as they strafed the ground for everything moving too, one German Messer was shot down by Russians and landed on their village's center. When the village kids went there, a Russian fighter strafed the wreck so some kids died. The Germans and later Russians/their allies Red Bulgars/Rumanians took every bigger valuables away from the villagers (Requiration). After the frontline moved Romanian soldiers stationed in the village. They laughed at the Hungarian kids. After that day news came that the Romanians were killed by mortar fire by the Germans while trying a forced river crossing.

But as in ww1 every nation was fighting an individual war . There was not much cohesion in how troops where deployed , equipment . strategies . The MAIN reason why Hitler invaded Hungary was because Horthy (in his ultimate wisdom) had front line troops on the Romanian border. This caused Romania to likewise wise do the same. This is when every soldier was needed on the eastern front. Hitler repeatably asked Horthy to transfer them, Horthy refused. So Hitler really had no choice but to invade. When the operation was over the size of the Hungarian forces doubled on the eastern front. P.S Hungary was a very poor ally. The shit they pulled was messed up.
