An aircraft crashes in the Florida Everglades, killing 101 passengers. After the wreckage is removed, salvageable parts from the plane are used to repair other aircrafts. Soon passengers and crew on those aircrafts report seeing what they believe to be the ghost of the wrecked airplane's flight engineer.

Apparently there was an incident where 2 flight attendants were speaking to an Eastern Airlines captain who they thought was deadheading. Yet because he wasn't saying anything, they went and got the captain, who when he saw the person in the seat, he recoiled in horror. It was captain Bob Loft!! This was also witnessed by 6 passengers. Imagine that happening before you have to fly a plane!! Or be a passenger on that plane after seeing that!! Especially as the figure just vanished!!

One thing that has always bothered me about this tragedy, is that Don was in the bottom of the plane when it crashed. Considering that he initially survived, I cannot imagine the experience this man had to endure. For anyone on that plane, in fact. May they all rest in peace.

Hi, dankelly9, my Dad was a pilot for Eastern Airlines for 30 years and he saw the ghost, just before lightning struck the plane. He flew the L 1011 for years starting in 1970. He told us about the ghost, me&my brother & sister. He said that pilots were especially apprehensive about seeing him because it usually meant there would be some kind of problem. He even imitated for us, what the ghost said and did. We were scared shitless. Lightning hit the plane, but it landed safely.

It has taken many years, but a memorial to the victims of Flight 401 was just dedicated this past December in Miami Springs. It was spearheaded by Beverly Raposa, an Eastern Flight Attendant and a survivor of Flight 401. As a flight attendant who flew for Eastern Airlines when this occurred, this has always been a painful reminder of what took place to our Eastern family and the passengers who lost their lives that night.

I read that book too about a year ago, a second hand book from a new and used bookstore. I thought it was going to be about as bad as the book itself look the cover Etc. Started off, kind of slow and I almost quickly lost interest, but I hung in there, and about halfway through I started to enjoy it, and got into it. My copy was a paperback from the '70s and looked every bit of it, including the cheap cover art, but as I said it gets interesting halfway through, I just really didn't like the interactions between the writer and surviving flight attendants and a few other employees and not to mention the medium and outside people. If you have a few hours one evening, and enjoy ghost stories, then read this book, you'll finish in 2 or so hours, the ghost encounters are well described. Thats about it, be blessed.

Also, our dads were about the same ages when they died, mine just being sooner than yours in December of 2009 he was 88 but would have been 89 in May. One story he did tell me once was about when he was on furlough one weekend (he was stationed in Italy). He met this boy about his age of early 20’s. 1. Actually it was; it happens to be a fairly well-documented, seemingly credible case of paranormal activity. There were so many separate sightings among those who purportedly had no predispositions or associations to the case or anyone else involved with it that had experiences with the supernatural. It was serious enough that it actually galvanized Eastern Airlines into doing a corporate inquiry and ultimately removing the parts used from Flight 401 off of the other planes.

It is hear-say, of course, but the witnesses are credible and the fact that all parts of the 401 crash that were put into other planes were eventually removed- that alone is compelling, not to mention that the sightings stopped after they were removed. I read Fuller's book when it first came out; it gave me chills. This is the first time for me to see the movie. After watching it, I remembered an incident, 5 years ago, when I worked at a hydroelectric power plant in the Sierra Mountains. It was at 7,000-ft elevation, 1 hour from the nearest town. It was winter - heavy snow. Two separate truck drivers (truck drivers in that area are tough, no-nonsense guys) reported seeing a woman walking naked on the side of the road, in the snowstorm. When the police investigated, they found her car. It was 50-ft down the hill. She was inside, dead, but her baby was in the car, alive. NB - I'm curious why Wikipedia doesn't have entries for the book or the movie.

My dad was lead investigator for the FAA on this crash. The reason the ghost was allegedly seen on intact aircraft was, Eastern Airlines salvaged many parts of the plane and had used these parts in other aircraft. This is a documented fact. Due to these unsettling encounters, EAS ordered the removal of Flight 401 salvaged parts from all other A/C and buried. They also invited the clergy to perforn last rite services at the burial site. After this was done, there were no more reports of sightings or unusual events. Unfortunately, this crash was the final swan song for a great airline. I hope this shed some light on this story. Hearing about these ghost stories reminds me of a crash deep in the jungle here in Costa Rica, it was so far deep that rescuers had to seek help from indigenous men to guide them through the jungle. When they were coming back from the wreckage (everyone died in the crash), some rescuers had pieces of the plane they took as "souvenirs". The journey back from the jungle was long, and weird things started to happen:: noises, fights between them, paranoia, etc... Then the indigenous guides told the rescuers to throw away the pieces of the plane they recovered, they said that was the cause of the whoke weirness it was happening, they said "lo que la selva se tragó no se le puede quitar" (what the jungle swallowed it cannot be taken away from her), and threatened to leave them behind if they didnt obey them, so they agreed, and everything was normal after that.

In 1996 I was in a F/A training class for SWA. The trainers had a flight attendant that survived the crash talk to every new training class. I wish I would have seen this movie and other documentaries before listening to her talk. She had a very difficult time after the crash and decades later.

Also chilling is that an Eastern Airlines flight attendant had a premonition about the crash about two weeks before it happened. She saw the plane going down in the Everglades close to Miami and the date was late December. Sadly it was pilot error that was the main cause of the crash. Everyone became preoccupied with the faulty lightbulb which indicated that the nose landing gear might not be down. Ironically the nose landing gear HAD lowered properly. Crew distraction meant that no one was paying enough attention to the altimeter and other information from the flight deck. A lot was learned from this crash. RIP to Capt Robert Loft, FO Stocksill and FE Don Repo and all the others who died that night near Miami. I do believe in this story, there were so many sightings of Loft and especially Repo by airline staff as well as some passengers. I refuse to believe that they were all just making it up or seeing things because they were grieving for those who had died that they knew.

@@kevincozens6837 Wrong. Auto pilot was turned on. But the plane had a feature that a slight touch of the wheel would disengage it. The wheel was accidently bumped, turning off auto pilot without any alert. A fatal design flaw. Also, the altitude alarm was just a short soft noise that was easy to overlook. This is all explained on the tv show Mayday.

Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 was a scheduled flight from New York to Miami. Shortly before midnight on December 29, 1972, the Lockheed L-1011-1 Tristar crashed into the Florida Everglades,[1][2][3] causing 101 fatalities. The pilots and the flight engineer, two of 10 flight attendants, and 96 of 163 passengers died; 75 passengers and crew survived. The crash occurred while the entire cockpit crew was preoccupied with a burnt-out landing gear indicator light. They failed to notice that the autopilot had inadvertently been disconnected and, as a result, the aircraft gradually lost altitude and crashed. This was the first fatal crash of a wide-body aircraft.

As a person holding an FAA Private Pilot's License that I earned back in Nov of 1975 and a big fan of flying, I vividly remember the crash of Eastern Flight 401. Being an avid fan of the Beautiful new Lockheed L1011 Tri-Star airliner that marked Lockheed's return to commercial aviation at the time - when the facts behind the crash came out indicating that there was nothing wrong with this new state of the art airliner save for a burned out light bulb - and that the crash into the Everglades happened solely because of Pilot Error - a Catastrophic Error on behalf of the pilot in command - Bob Loft, who failed to maintain the proper vigilance in the cockpit of his aircraft and keep an ongoing scan of the flight instruments including the ALTIMETER while troubleshooting the the problem of not having a nose gear down indication - I immediately became heavily critical of Captain Loft and his crew, and the technical specialist riding in the jump seat. There was a total of 8 eyeballs in the cockpit that night and Not One of them noted the indications on the Multiple Altimeters in the cockpit showing that the aircraft was descending and heading downward into the Everglades that were only 2000 feet below the assigned altitude for the flight hold to evaluate the nose gear indication problem. In the countless numbers of conversations that I've had with countless numbers of people over the years since the crash of Flight 401 I have repeatedly raised the question over and over again of :"How in the WORLD could the crew make such a Huge Blunder where not one of them noticed that the aircraft had departed its assigned 2000 ft. altitude and was headed downward to the swamp below?". If I had a dollar for every time I have said: "What a bunch of stupid Idiots" I'd be a millionaire today. And then it happened - it was my turn to be a stupid Idiot - Big Time (or so I felt when it happened)! "IT" - happened on January 2, 2015 as I came up with a very memorable way to ring in the New Year - by being a stupid Idiot. The day before (New Years Day) we had company coming up to visit with us for the day and my wife asked me to move my car from the main driveway to the side driveway on the right side of our home so that our guests could park their car in the main driveway. I gladly complied with my wife's suggestion and I moved my car over to the side driveway and parked it along side her car. On the morning of the next day - Jan 2nd - I got into my car and put it into reverse to head off to work. As I backed down from the side driveway I had to turn the wheel to the left to swing the car on to the main driveway and as I did - I heard this ominous loud bang and crunching sound as the right front section of my nice new car smashed into the left rear section of my wife's nice new car. I failed to back up enough to clear my wife's car before swinging my car over to line up with the main driveway. Dreading what I was about to see I put the car in park and jumped out to examine the damage to both cars - which I immediately realized was going to be a number in the thousands of dollars to repair. I headed off to work from there yelling and screaming at myself in the car at the top of my lungs - calling myself an Idiot over and over again. The repair cost for both cars per the body shop estimates came out to a grand total of $3,500.00. How could i have made such a Stupid and Costly Mistake??? ! ! ! I eventually got a grip and calmed myself down. Both cars have a $1,000 Collision Deductible and the Insurance Company (Liberty Mutual) is waiving one of the deductibles since both cars are on the same policy - so my total out of pocket cost will be $1,000.00 - not $3,500.00. Though my older son was very critical of me for my blunder (reminding me of how critical I've been of Bob Loft and his crew) my wife and my younger son were much more understanding. So how could I have made such a Stupid Mistake? - Because I am human - like Bob Loft and his flight crew, and humans make mistakes. Needless to say the outcome of my mistake pales in comparison to the outcome of the mistakes made by Bob Loft and his crew. And their mistakes pale in comparison to mistakes made by many other people over the years. Moving forward I now have a completely different opinion of Bob Loft and his flight crew. I am far less critical and much more understanding about what happened. Furthermore - I never believed in ghosts before either - but now I most definitely do! I also know now more than ever - that we as humans are bound to make mistakes - and that will always be. As bad as I felt about what happened in my driveway on Jan 2nd - in retrospect, as compared to the mistakes of others and the outcomes of those mistakes - I really got off very easy with this particular mistake. Neither I nor anyone was hurt or killed and the overall damage is very minimal, compared to the damage caused by the mistakes of others. I'll never forget from here on out to acknowledge and accept the construct of: To Err is Human - and that no one is exempt from this construct. So the next time you see someone make a mistake - including yourself - be Understanding and keep in mind - it could have been much worse! How much worse? Bill DeFalco Thank you for that story - learning humility is an eye-opening experience. As long as people are sober when they make errors, I support them. As the saying goes hindsight is 20/20. If flying were straightforward, we'd all be flying planes. It takes a pretty bright person to fly a plane professionally. I don't fly much, but I like to clap when they nail tight landings and some of the airstrips out there are a doosy. There have been a few times I was sure the plane wouldn't be able to stop before hitting something once we landed. Everytime, we broke out in spontaneous applause. We knew it took guts and talent.

When Loft disengaged the autopilot it gave off a tone sound, only Repo wasn't at his engineer seat to hear it...Now the flight computer tells you "Autopilot Disengaged"...Loft neglected to turn on the well light so Repo could see the indicator lines for a locked down gear...It prolonged the event which prevented the crew from monitoring the instruments...For those who don't know the nose gear was down and locked and the plane could have landed safely...By the way, I know what you mean...I boneheadedly forgot to close my car door and hit it on the garage door once when I was work fatigued...

I love him, too. I probably shouldn’t say this, but one of my favorite scenes of his is in the Poseidon Adventure, after the Shelley Winters character doesn’t make that swim through the wreckage. She’s laying up there on the twisted debris like a beached whale, and Borgnine swims up, takes a look at her, gulps and says, “You sure had a lotta guts, lady.”

@@jonp3890 Oh that was so emotional, even when I was a kid. Shelley was also one of those actors who was so easy to love, and that scene was so sad! Ernest and Shelley weren't the glamorous stars, not then anyway. They were just very human, and gifted actors.

As the daughter of two retired Airline Captains, with the nose gear issue, Don as the flight engineer went below to check the hell hole & sadly what a tragedy all the way around. Back in the 1980's the flight engineer position was eliminated due to advancements in circuitry & computing power. There is a heated debate about just having one pilot man on a plane which is absolute insanity.

I think people were much more accustomed to hearing the truth back then, without it having to be softened. They were not as coddled as people today are, and were treated more like adults. Today it seems as if we are supposed to avoid ever hearing anything unpleasant, or ever feeling depressed or ill in any way as if these things are not also an important part of life. It is much better, IMHO, to hear the truth from the beginning than to be given false hope.

Eastern sued John Fuller, I believe, over the book "The Ghost of Flight 401." The reason this movie has NOT returned to television is because in the suit, if I remember correctly, the film was NOT to be broadcast again. This download was sent to me by a friend, a fellow Aviator. John took the news not well. He started out NOT believing the stories of the "ghosts," but as John told me- he became a BELIEVER as he continued his research.

I appreciate the uploading of this movie. I find it hard to believe that an airline would announce through the P.A. system in an airport that a flight had 'crashed' and not use more softened language such as "the flight went down'. or "made an emergency landing". A bunch of people waiting for loved ones on a flight hearing the word 'crashed' would be uncontrollable.

Hi i was looking for someone to have made a comment about this. That is totally nuts that the airline would announce a crash over the P A system. Anyway i agree with you wholeheartedly..wow ..Yea it's probably just used 4 the movie , tho i think I'll look it up.✌

I have seen and experienced 'things' that are not of this world and to this day, the dreams given me tell and show me many things. This world has been deceived big time. TWA had purchased parts from the doomed L1011 and installed them in their aircraft and some TWA employees had seen apparitions of Repo/and or Loft. I read the book and am just now seeing this. I'm not super religious but I do believe that there is another world out there. There is a lot that we don't understand and we need to keep an open mind.

I’ve read the book about Flight 401 & watched numerous documentaries about this set of occurrences. Having been a proud Military Aviation Veteran & an International Airline Captain, I’m still at a loss as to how to explain the numerous sightings that have been reported by so many reputable individuals. I think that as we human beings progress, we will always be surprised by just how much we do NOT know about the incredible universe we live in. Many questions still need to be answered. An open mind will hopefully lead to answers. Meanwhile, we shall continue to live in the fog of uncertainty. Nevertheless, how fortunate are we to live here in this day and age, that allow us to ponder these mind bending reports.

They were squealing and jumping like little kids do and they just kept on about where they were going. About 15 minutes into the flight, both children got sick and cried the rest of that leg. I had to give the parents my Dramamine to put them to sleep. Poor kids, when the plane landed and they got off in the terminal, neither of the kids wanted to continue on to Disney World....lol. I felt so sorry for them, but I hope they had a good time when they got there.
