This movie was a staple on those 'Creature Feature' programs in Australia (mainly Sydney) in the late 60s and early to mid 70s before disappearing believed to be lost for decades, gaining cult status before surfacing on dvd and bluray, about five years ago. I remember watching this late one Saturday night when I was about eight or nine, in the very early 70s, and the ghost of the title completely freaked me out. Thanks for uploading this. Happy memories!

@@mjd4502 This was shown on “Deadly Earnest” back in 1966/1967 in Sydney. Mum and Dad not happy we were watching his. This film was unusual for “Deadly Earnest” as it was very modern compared to the films from the 1940s and 1950s, also Martin Landau was a regular on “Mission Impossible” which came out at the same time. Landau was a supporting actor in “North by Northwest”. “Cleopatra” and “Nevada Smith”. Then he went on to “Space 1999” and then he won the Oscar for best supporting actor playing Bela Lugosi in “Ed Wood”. From the looks of it it seemed as if it was a pilot for a series than never got off the ground.

@@stevecoleman2250 Yes, this was a pilot from 1964 that was not picked up which was to be called, The Haunted. Legend has it that the wife of the then president of CBS saw it and was freaked out by the ghost effects wnd told her husband that it would be too scary for network television! The reality is that CBS probably thought that it wouldn't fit in with its schedule. It was then padded out with extra footage retitled 'Ghost of Sierra de Cobre' and sold off as a TV movie mostly to the Philippines and Australia. I don't believe it ever played in the U.S. Deadly Earnest! The opening with the guys running around Channel 10 with the coffin, scared the hell out of 5 year old me!! The original shorter version, 'The Haunted' is also on KZbin, i think and works a little better than 'Ghost'.

Created by the same writer, cinematographer, and make up artist from the 1963 The Outer Limits series, it was no surprise that after this originally aired in 1964, people called in stating it was too frightening, causing the pilot to be dropped. One of the original series episodes titled SCARECROW was not shown in some cities for the same reason. No wonder Stephen King called The Outer Limits his favorite TV show! Another movie made by the same crew was THE INCUBUS (1966).

Black and white is always more mysterious. This actually happened to a family in New Orleans where they had a phone placed in their coffin. Dominic Frontiere fan here, and Diane Baker fan too, so obviously i love this film/pilot. The music sequence at about 7:50 to 8:50, when reworked, appears as a fundamental part of the soundtrack to The Invaders intro (throughout the series) being the music used during the "guest star" sequence. Appearing in the pilot of The Invaders in a key role, was the lovely... Diane Baker. Who also gets to walk off with free man Richard Kimble in the final scene of The Fugitive. For which the music was written by... Dominic Frontiere... 6 degrees of separation? Not even one degree with these people 😉

no one else is stunned by the idiocy of the ending? Not only is Martin L going to jail for murdering the old woman with a knife and then attempting to cover it up by driving the car off the bluff with the young woman in it , but here we have a man with an instinct and intellect so sharp that he knew everything , but he didnt get suspicious that she might drive off the cliff , after receiving several emotionally traumatizing blows, when she stops , pointed directly at the cliff, right where the ghost attempted to push it over not 5 mins before, then when he gets it , it takes him 90 seconds to move 15 feet . the rest was fun .

. the shorter The Haunted is probably the more effective telling. Aside from the relatively languid chunks that get omitted, including Orion’s speech quoted above and that magnificent long take, which here gets sliced to a few seconds, the ending is notably different. The backstory is the same, as is the dramatic climax, but this pilot abruptly gives us one tenor of ending while the longer version throws in one last dramatic twist as Orion stands there with his mouth open instead of making a move to do anything about it. This film was originally an hour-length pilot for an entire series (you can find the pilot separately here on youtube), however the pilot never got picked up, so they put together a feature-length using extra footage they had already filmed in order to at least finish the story, which hadn't been finished in the first version. What resulted is a lot of still strangely unanswered plot-points and suggestions of things to come, which never got to reveal themselves!
