Is that a Portuguese accent? I just realized I have no idea what Portuguese sounds like. Weird. Also, whatever his accent is, it’s very similar to the one used in early radio dramas for villains who were vaguely south Asian, likely because the real south Asian accent is not villainous to American ears & few Americans of the early 1900s had heard Indian accents. But he sounds exactly like a 1930s character actor whose name I cannot remember! It’s a little disconcerting but adds to the intrigue.

Suburban Lawns was possibly the only band that I can think of that was in LA...but shouldn't have been. Had they been part of the Athens-Atlanta scene with bands like Pylon or Love Tractor or the B-52s, they'd probably still be in "alternative" rotation to this very day. Right time...but 100% the WRONG city! Also, "Baby" hit the Nashville scene like a rogue asteroid when it dropped...you couldn't get away from "Flavor Crystals" for several weeks! But then...why would you WANT to? 👍

The Suburban Lawn's regularly played at the Cuckoo's Nest in Costa Mesa, I knew the band socially, from the Nest and local parties, but that was years ago, last I heard Sue was a classical musician and was embarrassed of her punk rock youth and did not want anything to do with rehashing her past, this is hearsay though, The Suburban Lawns was always a fun band to see live.
@Stromboli15Сағат бұрын
In some ways I think the novelty of Su’s approach to singing influenced others like Nina Hagen, Cyndi Lauper, and even possibly Romeo Void’s singer Deborah. Su’s “style” of her singing tone went from a cool, understated, “diva-esque” into that hyper stylized “cupie doll” register that could be likely found in female characters in the form of a “gangster’s moll” or girlfriend. In early film and later in more comedy spoofs of the same genre there always seems to be a woman with an incredibly unwittingly high pitched, “little girl” voice. Think of the old black and white cartoons of Betty Boop. Regardless, it was definitely a bit of “punk rock” attitude in her delivery as well which is where the disconnected “could not give a shit” appearance to the mix of “rock-a-billy” guitars and angular rhythmic changes which were definitely considered “New Wave” by myself and my friends here in So Cal back in the 80’s. My very first exposure to their self titled debut was in 1980 at my junior high school friend’s house. His older brother had the album and played Janitor for me and the hair on my arms stood up. I never have forgotten it to this day and your deep dive into Su and her whereabouts is great!! I was aware of the documentary being made regarding the band and their influence on the early LA punk scene. Another band who I would consider may have borrowed from Suburban Lawns is Bow Wow Wow when you consider their guitar Rock-A-Billy stylings of Matthew Ashman and even covering a ‘50’s pop song Do You Wanna Hold Me. Great video again man!! 👌😉😁👍💯❤️❤️❤️

People are allowed to retire from having a public life - something it’s very apparent she wanted to do. Folks treating it like a mystery to be investigated are being wildly disrespectful. You probably already have a bait-y “disappearance of Poison Ivy” video in the works to keep drawing attention to more retired people who want to be left alone.
