A lot of people don’t realize when you talk about Salem, at the time of The Salem Witch Trials, that there was Salem Village AND Salem Town and they were two separate and distinct areas from each other, with Salem Town being the more prosperous of the two. Even at that time though, there was always jealousy and covetousness running rampant and it was usually those that were prospering that found themselves on the receiving end of being accused of witchcraft. When accused, their property and belongings would be seized and then sold off, so those that were watching with envious eyes were able to obtain that which they had wanted. Property, live stock, fine furniture, etc.

Back when I lived in Salem, Ma, I passed by that cemetery many times. Both walking on Charter, St and Derby St. Back then Derby St was not like it is today. No Derby St wharf shops. It was all mainly younger renters of the "Hippie Generation" living down there ;) We'd go to a little bar /restaurant called "In a Pig's Eye" to see friends play music and of course have a drink or two. The building is still there but has been renamed. This was near Koskioskow Square which was just a small red brick paved space with benches. The old Polish men would gather there all the time in the nice weather. Did you make it to the Old Burial Point Cemetery in Marblehead, MA? 600 Revolutionary Soldiers are buried there. BTW I love your Halloween decor. You ought to experience the Witch's Ball in Salem for Halloween. (Oct 28th,2022)

I think what's semi-funny about this take on it being "the most haunted cemetery" is that that particular area is sooo well lit now due to PEM, street lights, Haunted Happenings' lights, etc, it's easy for anything to be judged as a shadowy ghost or whatnot. I worked Halloween season in Salem in '18 and '19, and would think people might say the Broad St. Cemetery is creepier since it's out of the way, a darker area with less lighting and more residential. Burying Point is in the middle of everything (literally) so I could see the living world's energy be pooled into that small space. I've been in it before, although I didn't feel any residual sadness or depression, thankfully. Cool series!

I recently read something about the fact that they may have discovered the actual area where the victims of the trials are buried. They would not have been give space in 'sacred' grounds. In fact it might have been the acts of the heroic pressing victim that allowed his wife to be buried in hallowed ground because he refused to confess. The suspected burial site, if I remember correctly, is on a rocky hillside. Still, gratitude for the 'outside the pale' markers.

What a sad and scary time in our History! Ignorance and fear ran rampant, oh kinda like today. Were the methods used for some of these deaths thought up especially for killing and torturing suspected witches? Some twisted minds thought up some of them. Pressing? Really? Curious! Thank you once again for an informative and entertaining video! Hs

@brandyjean7015
@brandyjean7015 2 жыл бұрын
The history of being 'pressed to death' is 4,000 yrs old, having originated in Southeast Asia. Carthaginian & Ancient Romans employed it as punishment as well. It took the English to use it as torture: attempting to illicit either a cry of 'not guilty' or a 'confession'. So not a big surprise that the Puritans would employ it in similar fashion.

Thank you so much for a second serving of spooky! My best beloved was in a revival of The Crucible in early 2016, and although I had read several books on the 17th Century's "Satanic Panic" I tried to help her prepare for the part by reading a dozen more before the two of us made an out-of-season pilgrimage to the Salem/Danvers area, ending on Gallows Hill (the actual site, not the one pushed at tourists). I don't believe the explanation that the Witch Craze was hysteria or ergot poisoning, or anything that can shift the blame from the accusers. The Puritans were a vile, ignorant, fascist people, the Taliban of their time, and since my early childhood I have refused to participate in any kind of Thanksgiving celebration because of the example they once presented to us all. Our culture here in the United States is largely based on facile lies. Then again, what we know as history is a Dark Age from which we shall soon emerge, like awakening from a bad dream. May all the wrongly accused find peace in the wake of this monstrous injustice... it can only get better from here.

Hi John! Yet another "Ghostly Curious History Story" about Salem. This was an excellent video, and if i ever get the chance to, i shall visit this Cemetery, and perhaps do a small investigation while there, to see if anyone want's to tell their story, or a chance to tell someone what happened to them. It is hard to believe that 347 souls reside there, and i'm sure that if given the chance to come back to this life, oh what stories they could tell us about what life was like back then, and what caused their death. It's a shame that mass hysteria caused the Witch Trials, and that the people of that time were so superstitious about others, yet as we go thru this life, onto our eternal resting place, and as others come along and look at our graves, i wonder what will be said of us, if they have the technology then as now to go back and see what "Curious History" we were into in our lives. As it is now October, and Halloween is coming, i look forward with great anticipation to see more "Haunted" Curious History. As always you all take care, and be safe out there on the road, and God bless you all. Love your channel.

The story of Salem's witch trials clearly represent the strangle hold religion had on the people of that time. It practically held sway on their everyday lives as the clergy looked upon their congregation with suspicious eyes. The teen aged girls who were the fire that lit the fuse of the trials with their fantastic tales about the women who could not clear their own names of the false accusations laid upon them, it was later learned, hated the women who were falsely accused, tried and hanged. Yes, their ghosts remain because they are still trying to get someone to listen to the truth of what they were doing in the forest. Those women were murdered by the clergy and by the government, as it was, of that time. To leave Europe to escape religious persecution only to be tried, found guilty and hanged by religious persecution is, in my mind, ironic and cruel.

Again from my experience, if you come across a spirit that puts off a strong electrical charge feeling to your body, this is not good. This is not your every day spirit/ghost. Beware! when they realized you have seen them and you attempt to communicate they sometimes want to make contact and will as much as follow you home. This is very real and I have experienced and seen this myself. I think only the name of Jesus. Will turn them away. Just a little heads up from what I know to be true.

I liked the style of this story's telling. Something tells me that, if the victims and their killers are buried in the same churchyard, there will be interesting things said on resurrection morning. Joking aside, Britain and Europe had similar witch manias earlier in their history. Much of it. I'm afraid was mass hysteria, superstition and 'score evening' of the sort your other correspondents mention.

I like the Halloween ambiance of the scene behind you, with that eerie orange lighting. I think what's most horrifying about this story is not the poor ghosts themselves, but the fear, superstition and cruelty of those who put to death innocent people.

My grandmother was born in Salem on October 31 back in 1800s. She married a guy named John monster whose dad‘s real first name was Herman. When my one son was five years old I took him to Salem Massachusetts for Halloween. We took photographs of that cemetery at night and the orbs that came out in the photos R fantastic. There’s definitely spiritual activity going on there. You can just feel it. Sometimes it’ll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Definitely a place to go visit❤

First off…Herman Monster? I wonder if he inspired The Munsters in any way! 🤔 I always think how awesome it would be to be born on Halloween! She must have been an awesome lady! I think it would be fantastic to experience the cemetery at night! Thanks for sharing this!

Excellent and tastefully done! My niece and I made a recent trip to Salem. We fell in love with this little, coastal village. But I can attest that it is truly "haunted". We rented an AirBnB house that was in a perfect location for walking to everything. It was a 200+ year old Victorian built by a sea merchant. There was a "feeling" about the house that was hard to explain. The rental had 3 bedrooms. The front bedroom was chosen by my niece. It overlooked Salem Harbor and the House of the Seven Gables. The middle bedroom was vacant. It connected to the front bedroom and to the living room. I took the 3rd bedroom in the back of the house that overlooked a lovely backyard and several beautiful old homes. The backyard had a grave with a headstone that was so old a tree had grown around it. I could never find the courage to look out the windows at night. I slept every night with the lights on! LOL! We had a few unexplainable oddities happen throughout the 4 days we were there but the last day took the prize. I was in the living room watching TV waiting for my niece to get up so that we could make the most of our last day. I was just about to call out to her to see if she was up when I heard her walk out of her bedroom through the connecting bedroom and into the living room. The floors were wood and very sqeakey. There were a few scattered rugs laying around but otherwise the floors were bare. I was sitting on the couch facing the TV. The space behind the couch was open and led into the kitchen and the back bedroom. The door to the middle bedroom was situated just slightly behind the couch. As she came out of the middle bedroom, she walked up behind me at which time my blood turned ice cold and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I've never experienced anything like that before in my entire life. I knew instinctively it was not my niece standing behind me. I was frozen in fear. I finally got the courage to call out her name. She answered me from her bedroom. She was still in bed. I told her she should start getting ready to go out before we lose the best part of the day. Suddenly one of the shades in her bedroom flew up (it had been pulled to the bottom of the window). It rotated round and round like it had been pulled with great force. She jumped out of bed and ran into the living room asking what the hell was that! I laughed and told her she has a personalized wake up service. I waited to tell her about my eerie experience until we got away from the house. It freaked us out but we've learned to laugh about it. It is truly something you have to experience to believe. We did visit the Burying Point and the memorials for the murdered victims of the witch trials. The history in that little town is amazing but there is a cloud of sadness that hangs over it. Thank you for another fine video. It was good to remember Salem but now I'm creeped out again! LOL!

@@CuriousHistoryYT In a heartbeat. It was a mischievous spook. It was basically harmless. It was having fun with us even though it scared the beejeebies out of us. If I had seen an entity, then no. I couldn't handle that. Now I know what it feels like to be scared to death. Don't think my old ticker could take it. LOL!

This was such a great video. Thank you! I lived in New England for about 15 yrs before leaving for the west coast. I shied away from the Salem site because it was always so commercialized.. now I wish I would have taken the time. Luckily, we just moved back New England and I am newly inspired to visit Salem. Fyi, my spouse is said to be related to the male involved in the incident that inspired the Scarlet Letter. An distant uncle I believe. Anywho... I will definitely share experiences if I have any.

I'm related to at least one accused witch (pretty sure it was all 3 Towne sisters) on my dad's side, and Cotton Mather on my mom's side. It's pretty crazy to think that hundreds of years later, those two families literally kissed and made up! 😄
