I love how, while this is brutal, Cooper plays it fair. He waits for them to come back, doesn't hurt the little girl, asks relatively politely for the information he wants. The Dad is clearly on the same page, so he lets him convince his son. And then he lets Tommy reach for his gun. The kid didn't have to. Coop likely would have just walked out if he didn't. But they all knew Tommy was about to do something stupid.
@jackzen454722 күн бұрын
This stuck out to me too. I don't think the The Ghoul even wanted to kill Tommy. Him saying "Maybe someday..." was him testing Tommy. To see if he'd back down. If Tommy sat there crying and begging for mercy, that would've satisfied Cooper, he'd know he just scared this kid shitless and no way he'd try going after him, at least for a while.
@stevejamieson846813 күн бұрын
What people have to remember is that with Cooper, he has simply adopted a more ruthless approach to surviving in the wastelands. Cooper Howard know as The Ghoul didn't care that he was going to kill Tommy or the family either by him, the raiders, mutated creatures, or even time. Because The Ghoul can live a lot longer than a human can, it comes with a price, to forever walk the earth, not dying, and see people they care about all gone. Generation after generation that comes and goes, no matter how they die, either by his hands, or someone else's, or even time. Stranger gets information and I think the man of the house tries to draw and open fire on the stranger but is beaten to the draw and killed. Stranger departs leaving the man's (now widow) mourning over her dead husband. It feels like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly or one of the movies from that trilogy. I am thinking it was a Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes) scene. I do love Coop's cowboy themed character in the show. In his limelight he was the Clint Eastwood of his day in the movie theatres. Now in the nuclear wasteland he has to rely on those ancient days cowboy gunslinging/fighting techniques to survive in this dystopian future. It is like the Opposite of Dune where the advanced Holtzman shield forces combatants to go back to hand-to-hand, bladed combat.

It is a citation from The Good,The Bad and The Ugly, there is a scene that is almost the same. On the "plot" point, this is to show how the ghouls tracks down the others and also how ruthless he is. In old Western movies this kind of scenes had the point to show us the precise morality of a major charachter. How do they pursue their goals against the weak alone colonists of the west? Do they show faith in the good of people or in the bad side of people? How good are they with their weapons? So when they face the other main charachters we know whats up and we know the stakes. Usually this scenes are done in saloon, during poker gambit, during a valuable exchange/standoff or, like in this one, during an interrogation.
@AHersheyHereАй бұрын
Also there are cases of murder on the American frontier, where the man was found 'not guilty' because the man he killed "had killed someone in his family". This was back in the day where if you were wanted, you could just leave the province and the law wouldn't follow you. So the threat of Tommy seeking him out for a "justified killing" isn't farfetched.

@@gwac0609tbf, ain’t no way Tommy was going to get out of this scene alive. The ghoul already made up his mind to kill Tommy. He even says it “maybe not today, maybe someday”, he wasn’t going to leave loose ends, esp not Tommy who would be out for revenge for the death of his brother. Im pretty sure Tommy knew that too, so he chose to try drawing rather than accepting his fate and get shot.

@@wongyikai2126 I do see your reasoning but if the ghoul didn't want to leave any loose ends, he would've killed the entire family in these situations it's best to wipe out the whole bloodline to prevent any revenge killing the ghoul was certain the father and Sandra wouldn't do anything but he wasn't too sure about Tommy so he baited him to see if the kid was stupid enough to draw on him and unfortunately Tommy was that stupid. your still right on there was no way Tommy was getting out of this alive, but it was because Tommy was his own worst enemy in the end as kids his age are known to be and sometimes it's fatal.

Don't worry, Tommy's flagged as an essential NPC until the Ghoul finishes this quest; he'll get back up in a few minutes.

@@pll3827 nah the ghoul provoced him by using his brother, offcourse the younger brother would react to that, it was a dirty move by the ghoul.

@@pll3827 Focused too much on his brother who was dead and not enough on his younger sister who was still alive. His hot-headed actions, while understandable, put the entire family at risk and was ultimately selfish and stupid.

tbh he was wise enough to kill the son, since he'd want to pursuit him for revenge in the future anyway. He probably saw that multiple times during his long life after the war, and even before in his own western movies he starred in. He's just as pragmatic as someone can be.
