Wow, this is wonderful! At the first of the video, I just knew I would get the Giffin because I didn’t want to center. Then I changed my mind because of the cleanup and the soft grips.... and yep, I changed my mind again....because I can be gentle with the grips and I’d rather clean up the base plate than have to center. I want that precise centering for the pretty foot. I’m just too new to center myself. Thank you so much!! Without your demonstration I would have been disappointed in either that I chose for one reason or another, thinking I should have chosen the other. This way I can make the most informed decision. Thanks for this comparison. It was very helpful. I was a ceramics major class of 1971 and it's been a long time (30 Years) since I played in clay. Neither of these was around when I was throwing on the wheel so it's a whole new world. I throw in a community studio so I need to figure out which one would be the most flexible. I love the idea of the self-centering Giffin Grip. Thanks again for the comparison.

I had a Griffin grip for over 20 years. I actually wore out some of the areas and couldn’t get a tight fit anymore. They said they had never had that complaint before . But 20 years is a record. Hi Marie. Am looking for a trimming grip and great to see you did this demo. :-) Must say both are as functionable as they are designed for. But each also has its less ideal. The Bailey is easy to assemble but does not come with any extensions which means a taller ware or a no-foot pot may not apply. While the Giffin grip takes a little longer to build up but comes with various extensions for most forms. However, it sits higher than the splash-pan which throws off clay everywhere...:-( Did you have any solution to this? Thank you :-)
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can buy extensions for the Bailey separately. Hope this helps with your decision 😊

You know how the giffin grip you can change to a grip that's taller without removing the thing from the wheel or removing the pot? Can you do that with the bailey? it looks like it's put on with a screw, and may not be as easy to change up. It looks like it would be sooo easy to drop those screws while trying to change the size and there aren't extras in the box. Or do they stay still since it's on the wheelhead?
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right you would have to take it off the wheel and change the extenders. I have not had problems with screws (So far)😊

@@PotteryCrafters thanks! Will be an investment someday. I think the grip is more expensive than that wheel and that’s all I have for now, starting out. Do you live in Arizona? You’ve mentioned a few things that made me wonder and your grocery ad newspapers look familiar!

Thank you for your informative video. I had been looking for more comparison information and this was helpful. My question is about centering a piece that is not perfectly centered itself. Specifically, I'm thinking about a larger/wider bowl, where the bottom may be centered, but the rim may be off. How do either of these handle that? Also, what about a wide piece, such as a plate or platter. It seems with the Bailey, you have the potential of the rim hitting the bat pins? TIA!
@PotteryCrafters4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful!😊 You can trim up to 11 and a half inches across with the Bailey and 12 with the Giffin Grip. The Bailey quick trim is better for centering uneven pieces. With the bailey, the bat pins will not get in the way. They do not stick out of the holes. I hope this helps in your decision 😊

Thank You. I can’t seem to get my Giffin Grip to fit my Clay Boss.
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
The Clay Boss has a 14-inch wheel head it should fit. My brent has the same size wheel head. If it's too tight take it out just a bit at a time and make sure all three are on the same mark. I know it can be tricky because those marks are so light and tiny. You can also try marking the lines with a marker so you can see them better. That's what I did and it helped a lot. I hope this helps.😊
@marlahazan3 жыл бұрын
How do they compare on price?
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question. The Baily Quick trim is roughly half the price. But the Bailey is more simply made. 😊
@gbennett582 жыл бұрын
Alas, my wheel came without bat pins installed. I drilled holes and installed my own, but they are slightly off center. So neither of these devices which attach to the bat pins will work for me. Sigh.
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
If you can throw with 10inch bats, then you should be able to use the bailey quick because you can move each screw to where your pot is centered. You can also use the Giffin grip because it attaches to the wheel head, not your bat pins. Hope this helps. 😊

I got a giffin grip and I freaking hate it. You have to be SO careful both starting and stopping the wheel. Because of the intertia of the heavy top part it will tighten further when you start and you can CRUSH the piece easily with a heavy foot. There should be a latch or a lock to stop the top from spinning!
@PotteryCrafters11 ай бұрын
That is a great point. the new mini Giffin does have a lock and the pads are much softer. Here is the review for the mini if you are interesting kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnbJiKiPf82Labc

😊 The quick trim is less because it doesn't have the movable parts that the Giffin Grip has. The good news is, the Giffin Grip is built well and lasts a very long time. 😊
@tomsalpietra65814 жыл бұрын
My wife and I both do pottery. She throws and I hand build, so it’s a great team when we work together. I bought her the Bailey QT2 (15”) for Christmas, as it was more flexible to trim pieces that aren’t perfectly round (especially made by newbie non-professionals), as well as odd-shaped or even “square” pieces that I often make. It’s also considerably less expensive (though money wasn’t the object). The disappointing thing is that both companies, for the amount of money you spend, give you an “erector set”, and make you, the customer, put the trimming devices together. WAKE-UP companies and treat your customers as customers and ship them a fully assembled device! Even if you have to charge them another $10!
@PotteryCrafters4 жыл бұрын
That's great that you are both into pottery. I'm like your wife. I enjoy the wheel more but they are both great forms of crafting art.😊That's funny “erector set”😂 Have them come assembled then make your own adjustments.
