The Girl Is Mime - Starring Martin Freeman

Did the mime commit the crime? Clive Buckle is being questioned about the murder of his wife. Interrogation brings back a slew of memories, some good, some bad...some sexy. The police are convinced he did it, they just need a weapon; but Clive's saying nothing.
The film was made for the London 48 Hour Film Project, 2010... so yes, we made it in 48 hours.

Analytic pondering time! What I want to know is, why would Clive be angry that his wife got into Mime? I mean, at first she obviously wanted to do what he was doing. She thought he'd be proud of her, happy for her. It's something that they could do together. It's only when he flat-out mimed NO that she got into Sexy Mime, almost as a revenge tactic. Why didn't he want her entering his world, if he loved her enough to marry her? Was he overprotective of a hobby he thought was distinctly "his"? Did he want a "normal" wife because he liked having a foot in reality? Or perhaps Mime represents a dysfunction in this film. He was so happy that this woman loved him for who he was and was willing to work with his strange side, while still remaining herself. He doesn't want her becoming like him because that's not going to help. I mean, I struggle with anxiety. I probably wouldn't want to marry someone who also has anxiety, because if I'm having a panic attack, I need someone there to help me calm down, not panic next to me and make it worse. Similarly, one of my best friends has Borderline. The love of her life is a stable man (with a touch of Asperger's). He's like a rock who can handle when she freaks out, and forgives easily. If he had BPD, I highly doubt that relationship would last, if it began at all. On another note, maybe it's just representative of flaws in general. We know our human weaknesses and we don't like seeing them reflected in other people. I might get upset with my friend for procrastinating, because I know what it's like to procrastinate and I want her to be more successful than that. Or I don't like seeing the way my mom gets uptight, or the way my dad argues, because I know I act in a similar fashion. It's aggravating. I think the bottom line is, we seek out friends and partners who give us a sense of balance. If their flaws are too much like ours, it can start to fall apart. Just some thoughts! I'd love responses and other suggestions :D

Hey Bry, it's nice that you've thought about the film so deeply. To answer your question, when we were writing the film, we talked about Clive not wanting his wife to encroach on what was his. So what you said was right, he was overprotective of his hobby. It made him who he was and he was proud of that. Let's face it, if you got married and your husband turned up at your office the next day wanting to do your job, you'd probably be a bit freaked out. Have you seen Single White Female? I believe that he loved her for who she was and maybe a foot in reality would have been beneficial to him. Either way, he had to put his foot down because he wasn't interested in having a mime for a wife... like you explained, for you, a partner with anxiety wouldn't work. However, this might not be true for others. Some people certainly find comfort when they meet someone with whom they share commonalities. Sometimes with film, there is no right or wrong answer, it's open to interpretation. That's definitely true of TGIM; I like to hear what people think about certain aspects of the film. Did he actually kill her? Does he actually shoot himself at the end? How did he put a key in his mouth when he'd already zipped it shut?

See I had thought that it was because he didn't think she respected his hobby. Like, if John Cheever's wife wrote middle-school level smut fiction but tried to pass herself off as a real writer. I'm not saying one is inherently lower, but I can definitely see how a professional might view that as a debasement of his passion.

I found this while looking up videos of Martin on SNL, so I was expecting something cute and funny, and instead I got this, god, this beautiful film. I didn't think that my respect for Martin Freeman could rise any more, but I was simply stunned by his role in this. Such a heartbreaking performance without uttering a single word.
