Fincher is a master film maker, but he is especially good at creating dreamy, etheral scenes, so pretty to look at, and then filling them with ever-increasing, unresolving tension. In TGWDT, he does this many times. Personally, I thought Rooney gave an objectively amazing performance. She was hard and edgey when she needed to be but was also able to flesh out a bit of empathy and humanity from Lisbeth, which is not easy to do. Sort of like trying to melt an iceberg with a disposable lighter. In fact, my heart broke a bit for her when she discarded the coat she had bought as a present for Blomkvist. I was hoping for a Fincher sequel with the same cast but it doeasn't look like it's going to happen.

I have been a case manager, case worker, case officer, etc in the social welfare system for 37 years, and Rooney Mara is so spot on as a heavily traumatized victim of childhood abuse. I never saw the Swedish film, and don’t need to just to find out how accurate Rapace was in displaying a realistic portrayal of how far child abuse will effect child development. Reading comments on line, reviews, talking heads, etc, have no effing clue just how, and why, Mara was impressive my guess is that Mara signed more than a few HIPAA authorizations during her research for this role.
