I agree with Ricardo Rocha. Way funnier and more good explanation of the book. I am an English teacher and would love to show these, but my school district in Maryland said we can't because of the shot (drink) and the cursing and the word nutz. Have you ever thought about a kids version for just your classic books? Maybe a lil' thug Notes and use one of your own kids, if you have any? Most of the books on your list are done in middle school and high school. Some of them are done in grade 5 as well.

I worked in a group home for troubled kids. The teens were given the Giver to read by their teachers and the boys especially really got into the book. Every night we had our nightly discussions, usually about feelings or ways they dealt with problems throughout the day in a group therapy session. While they were reading the Giver they were able to mimic their own lives with the story. A lot of them came from horrible family lives of drug addict and abusive families. They knew what it meant to live on your own, not be fed and go out looking for help (which in their cases led to trouble) at an early age. At the group home they had 3 meals a day plus two snacks so they never starved. They had counsellors who looked after them but the also had rules, bed times, rules for hygiene, behavioral rules, etc. They understood the difference in a sameness vs real life situation and were able to adapt their own lives to the story. When asked which they preferred 80% said real life not sameness.

This book is really one of a kind. It got me reconsidering what is life. At the end of the book, the light itself reminds human that no matter what tough things you're dealing with, there is light ahead of you. As Fitzgerald written 'tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther', we might reach the light. The reailty is indeed full of Sh*t but we need to keep ourselves moving on. Sometimes the truth ain't good enough, people deserves more.

I loved this book back when I read it in middle school, and I still hold it as one of my most important books I have ever read. I'm concerned about how the upcoming movie will handle all of this, as the trailers shown so far seem to be trying to make this into an action movie of some sort when there is minimal action in the book. I hope that production doesn't try to shape this story into something it is not.

Any non-tv safe swear words are censored - What would make this clean enough for your classroom?
@lilredbanned26810 жыл бұрын
I was just going to say the same thing. Perhaps you should teach your students the use of AAVE and compare it to classroom English. Perhaps you could analyze why this speaker chooses to use this form of English over the accepted AE form we all try to push our students towards. I don't teach in the states anymore, but if I did, I would use this not only to aid in analysis, but to analyze as well. Love this dude.
@wordforger10 жыл бұрын
Wisecrack There are parents that would get up in arms even over a word like "Crap". It kind of puts teachers in a dilemma because your idea to use more colloquial English while advocating reading and analysis of classic literature is FANTASTIC, but they have to worry about their principals or parents giving them nasty notes or calling for their heads for showing the students something riddled in swear words. Might I suggest that perhaps you have a second playlist of the "cleaner" version where all the swear words are muted out for classroom use? I know it would be more work for you, but if you did it that way then "Thug Notes" could be used both in the classroom and just for entertainment of the common youtube user. I personally don't mind the swear words myself, but as someone who works with teachers I do understand the dilemma that many face.
@nataliealewine725010 жыл бұрын
I personally don't believe in censorship, but my beliefs count for squat when the district is involved. I would much rather be able to have a conversation about language and when it is appropriate. As it is now kids blush when they read the most basic of curse words and then show their friends. If we had a culture where it was discussed, cursing would be a lot less of a distraction.
@wordforger10 жыл бұрын
Natalie Alewine I agree with you. While I think that relying almost entirely on swear words is the crutch of ignorance, I do believe that swear words have an important place in the English language. Look at Ceelo Green's song "Fuck You" as an example. The censored version "Forget You" is not nearly so to the point or powerful because it doesn't adequately convey the sentiment.
