I'm gonna have to say Abomination. The natural color of a betta is very different than what you see in pet stores, and even more drastically different than the glo version. Unfortunately, Betta are one of the most neglected and misused fish in the hobby, and I think genetically modifying the species even more, which will undoubtedly appeal to inexperienced kids, will lead to more neglect and misuse.

I have zero problem with them as long as they advertise the proper care for the fish. I don’t see any diff from the other bettas that breeders breed for certain traits such as fins body etc... that on its own can be severely cruel because there’s a lot of culling going on to keep those “desired” traits passed on. To me that’s just as sick and a double standard. All fish lives matter lol

X S interesting point. Yes, all fishie lives matter for sure. ☺️

I get your point, but they may "cull" them into another tank to be sold as a normal fish. Depends on who the breeder is too. I'm not a breeder at all, but seeing people's fish rooms. I'd have a 500 gallon random fish tank. I like livebearers, so I'd have the 500g with all the guppies and platies and mollies I could. They would just live out their days in peace, who cares if they turn into the newest trend? But fish who cant swim or their backs are messed up should be culled into the turtle tank just so they dont have to suffer (and you dont want that gene passing on to your other fish.

I am much more into the natural setups of aquariums and fish versus the GMO side of it. Bettas are already so colorful! The thing that really appeals to me is the fact that people in pet stores will need to buy more than the glo betta or fish and will need to get an arrangement for the fish. But a glo betta is just like “OOOOH. PRETTY” to me. And I can understand how people would say that’s not good. A lot of inexperienced people and kids are going to come up and try and get their parents or whatever to buy them these tanks and these fish and they’re not gonna know how to really properly care for a betta. Also on a betta note in general I feel like betta kit tanks should come with heaters now and at least a note that says “Betta fish like warm water!”

He and my mom bred them for a while, and all of my childhood included a male Betta, I haven't had one for about 7 years, but have been looking into taking another baby into my care. I really hope these "glo bettas" are well line-bred by responsible breeders and that their health is taken into consideration first and foremost. I think they are gorgeous and so fun! I love naturally beautifully colored bettas too, but these guys look so cool. I actually had my last boy (male blue veil tail) in a tank with the blue lights and "glo" fish setup. He looked amazing and so did all of the decor and enrichment. I loved that fish for almost 5 years and still miss him. To those wondering that haven’t got too far into the video or need a little explanation the glo effect of the fish doesn’t effect the life of the fish in any way as the genetic glow of the fish just makes it glow and that’s it, and it’s just the same fish but just glowing(the reason for the glowing effect is the introduction of the same glow effect that are present in coral and jellyfish when they’re an embryo, then when that fish grows they breed them so they don’t have to keep putting the gene in the egg cause obviously doing that is more expensive than breeding them) in my opinion the glow fish are fine it’s just that it depends on the owner of the fish and the care you go to take care of said fish, except it gets bad when the people buying the fish buy it as a decoration, or for children which of course ignore their fish, however if the appeal of the fish is changed to where the tank looks less neon and more natural environment then that could help things a bit more, an example is I’ve had 6 glo black skirt tetra living with a few guppies inside a 116 gallon tank and they’ve been around for 3 years now, granted one died around a month ago in November, also the tank is decorated with real plants and there’s only 1 structure in the tank and that’s just a very tall rock, so it comes to show that glo fish are perfectly fine fish, only that they glow, and calling them abominations for what? the way people treat them? That sounds like your issue rather than the fish, or even the marketing, blame the marketing for the treatment of the fish not the fish itself, and if you want to call them abominations for the GMO aspect I can’t do anything there, and if you don’t like the glo fish and don’t wanna buy them, go ahead oh and another thing I forgot to mention is that because the glow DNA comes from Coral and Jellyfish both of which have no eyes, glo fish have around 40% chance of being *partially* blind but I’d say that’s ok, I mean you’re not gonna give up on your son if he turns out blind, you just gotta give him a little care, I mean it’s better than having a fish with a organ defect or can’t swim, I mean I haven’t dealt with a blind fish before as all the glo tetras I own aren’t blind fortunately, they can see perfectly fine but in general I’d say glo fish are neat, just depends on how you treat them. My best advice is treat them exactly like how you would treat the base genome of the fish, like an example would be a betta, treat a glo betta like how you would treat a normal betta, normal tank and everything, no need for any special care, I mean unless it happens to be blind but even so from what I’ve seen a blind betta still lives a good life, so in summary, should you buy a glo fish? Perhaps, if you want a little colorful flare in your tank without a fish that’s aggressive cause so many pretty fish are always aggressive then go ahead, add one to your tank, just choose the color you want. I personally like the yellow ones, they’re just pretty and for the 2 questions in this video; no I don’t think they’re abominations. And also yes I like the name Slimer, very cute name for him

The decoration part is a valid concern. As far as GMO goes, you can better target the changes you want. These glo GMO fish are very globally specific gladly. They are beautiful. I'm impressed by the science behind it. I think. Given how much problems the non Glo versions have affected the wild. My concern is how these will inevitably affect the wild areas they eventually are released into. Apreciate your GMO understanding. Remember how it's only a few years of some approval for these creatures. But the same species (danios, barbs, betta etc) have caused mayhem all around America in their natural form (and that's just America). The glo GMO factor is purely based on sparking eyes for aquariums. Has no idea whatsoever the potential (sure, if any, but likely some which is in itself a big deal) impact on wild ecosystems. GMO creatures should be well obseverd. We often move too fast and can't take back. Releasing a GMO fish in the aquarium hobby should I think be considered as releasing that species into the wild and taken very seriously given states or continents etc. Similar to most GMO creatures. Just most we don't keep for fun. They're bugs for crops and such

It's funny when you were talking about the GMO aspect of glo fish, my first thought was; isn't selective breeding basically the same thing? Whether you like glo bettas or bettas with fancy colours/ fins they are all GMO. Might as well just get the fish you like and look after it properly.
@benjaminsilvert18804 жыл бұрын
@Richard Rodgers I mean you are still adding or removing genetic materials from a given species. With selective breeding it is done in a tank were as with GMO it is done in a lab. Choosing which animals breed to produce a specific breed of animal is still not natural because those genes would not have been passed down in the wild. Also if you look at hybrids like Flowerhorns or blood parrots they are made from two different fish that literally can not reach each other in the wild, again not very natural.

I thought the glo phase was over! I personally like regular bettas. The colors are better imho. Question with the pea puffers. Would you house them with guppies if the tank was big enough and heavily planted? I love my guppies but of course they breed like rabbits. I didn’t know if the babies could be a randomly good food source for the dwarf pea puffers.

If the tank was big enough it might work. The pea puffers might be able to catch the babies, but my guess is many would survive.

I'm very fond of my female glo betta. I have 3 other betta tanks with different types of betta. All of them are planted. I don't think having a blue light on all the time is healthy for a tank. I did get the glo betta tank but I added another light to get better results with my plants. So far, Glowla, is doing amazing. I hooked her up with some Indian almond leaves and things she'd naturally love.

I think it’s great that ya’ll pointed out the fact that fish breeders have been doing this forever with many other fish. Some that cause health problems to the fish i.e. fancy goldfish with horrible digestion issues, the blue Jack Dempsey which only live like a year due to the genes. This is just a little different. But still fish that need care same as all.

FYI, GloFish are patented by the company, and so it's illegal to breed them. GMO companies have a long history of suing over their intellectual property rights, so it's a risky endeavour.

I thought that only applied to if you make money of it, like selling them
@bettatimestories8074 жыл бұрын
@@bentleyangeldekao7768 Nope, can't even breed them for yourself without violating the terms of purchase. Same goes with a lot of the new garden plant varieties, you're technically not allowed to even take clippings to propagate for your own garden. Another reason my vote is for "abomination", goes against the spirit of the hobby IMHO.
@gemtail31253 жыл бұрын
Some of the complaints I have about them is that you can only get them from a retail store. And if you privately breed them, you cannot resell or give them away because of the trademark laws. The bettas we all know and love are always going to be pets that would never make it in the wild anyway so I see nothing wrong with a glofish betta as long as this mutation isn't hurting them. If I had one, I'd keep it in a nice tank with plants and have one section of it with blue LED light so you can occasionally see the 'glow' when the fish swims by it. However, like you said, we need to see if these guys are actually okay or not or if they do wind up developing problems later in life or if their lifespan is shortened from the mutation, first. If it turns out that it is just a color thing it affects and it doesn't even shorten their lifespan, then the breeding potential could be AMAZING! But again, the fish being patented prevents selling or giving any away. So to breed them as a hobbyist, you would have to be okay with keeping all of the fry. However, the patent does discourage people from getting too excited about breeding them and jumping the gun before it can be established as to whether or not these genetic modifications cause problems or not. Although there is such a thing as doing something illegal and not getting caught so I won't be shocked if people already have anyway. Also, Slimer is an AMAZING name! I think I'd name mine Fathom if I got one... yes, I'd name him after the Wings of Fire character.

Hello Joanna. I like the name you chose. Pretty cool. I had an idea for the tank if you ever re-purpose: With the glow light you could mimic a saltwater tank. The colors would pop out and i guess anything with white would as well. I am a bit hesitant on those glow fish but i think it is more linked to the inappropriate care for Bettas in general. I may set up one of those tanks but to mimic a saltwater tank. I have a question: where is your nano-wall? Is it in your fishroom or in your art room? Have a wonderful day !!

Glo Betta?? Absolutely!! I know Glo Fish in general are not the most popular in the hobby although I'm not sure exactly why. My 14 year old (two years ago) wanted a Glo Fish tetra so we got a tank and a yellow Glo Fish (after cycling tank). Since then I bought a 14 gallon cube and three more Glo Fish along with some cory cats. Since that time, I've come down with a bad case of MTS. Yep, a 75 gallon fully planted (highly recommend Cory and crew at Co Op) with spiderwood, mopani, rocks, caves, and various deco from PetSmart. About 10 shopping trips and 60 fish later, my Glo tetras are still the most awesome, peaceful, colorful showoffs in the tank! Just got a King Betta yesterday for the 14 gallon since it was sitting there cycled and empty. Had ZERO clue there were Glo Betta fish. Although it would be a tough decision if I had known because my King is so colorful and absolutely charming. For anyone knocking Glo Fish in general, maybe stop focusing on the general trends and stock a few of these stars in your tank(s). They are absolutely fantastic! Thanks for this video, although I'm guessing it might add to my MTS hahaha.

I love the Slimer name. I've got a betta sorority set up that's Tiamat themed and a globetta was the closest thing I could find to green. Her actual name is Peridot and she seems to get along as well as the rest of the girls. She looks fantastic under the blue light but I don't anticipate I'll actually use it that much if at all; the other bettas really start to target her if when she's glowing. The plants helped but overall I don't see me leaving blue light unattended. I'll be watching closely for lifespan and possible genetic issues. I hope the company is up on their gene editing game and using CRISPR to do it, which should limit any side effects, but we'll see how it goes. Price wise she was less expensive than my premium male I have (seperate tank) who is not a glofish, so really that seems pretty par.
