In those years, our country was torn apart by our bloodiest war and upon emerging from that conflict with the outbreak of the Spanish American War our nation transitioned from its isolationistic roots to ascend the world stage as a global superpower. Over that same timeperiod Mare Island transitioned from building and repairing steam powered sidewheelers to fielding nuclear-powered warships brandishing weapons of unimaginable power.
Mare Island is a National Historic Landmark of critical importance to the Bay Area, the Nation, and the World over its 142 years of operation. Today capitalizing on that history is of vital importance to the successful redevelopment of the former naval base.
