This 40 minute video covers how and why Mare Island Naval Shipyard came to be and the critical role that it played in our Navy and our National Story during its 142 years of operation. In those years, our country was torn apart by our bloodiest war and upon emerging from that conflict with the outbreak of the Spanish American War our nation transitioned from its isolationistic roots to ascend the world stage as a global superpower. Over that same timeperiod Mare Island transitioned from building and repairing steam powered sidewheelers to fielding nuclear-powered warships brandishing weapons of unimaginable power.
Mare Island is a National Historic Landmark of critical importance to the Bay Area, the Nation, and the World over its 142 years of operation. Today capitalizing on that history is of vital importance to the successful redevelopment of the former naval base. As the operator of the Historic District, it is the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation’s role to keep that history alive where it happened. Mare Island’s Saint Peter’s Chapel is the oldest naval chapel in the United States, and it is once again available for your use as an event venue as are the beautiful and extensive grounds of the Admiral’s Mansion. Event venues and tours of Mare Island’s incredible historic district are available for booking by calling (707) 557-4646. The former Mare Island Museum remains closed until further notice due to recently identified structural and accessibility issues.
