My old G17, that I picked up back in ‘87, just went up in my estimation. I even have the old tupperware box ...so funny how everything comes back around. It cost me $350.00 back then.. The guy at the gun shop thought I was crazy for buying it and the local range wouldn’t let me shoot my “terrorist gun” there for the first couple of months. It’s serial number starts with “BC”...

Václav Fejt , Well... with the rifle and pistol club treating me like I was a criminal, and already having an understanding that a Glock would not get past a detector... I was already pretty ticked. And then idiotwood has to throw a “ceramic Glock” into Die Hard 2, I became even more outspoken at the range. There was already all kinds of hairdresser gossip and Die Hard2 didn’t help. There were people who swore up and down that a ceramic Glock existed and all kinds of crap. Finally, The Alaska State Police adopted the G17 and the Florida Marine Patrol as well...and this calmed things down a bit. That was the dawning of Glocks acceptance into the police market. Funny thing is I was routinely criticized for saying that the Glock would become an accepted police handgun. This was when the Sheriff of Quincy Florida, ( the county where the Tallahassee police academy I attended was located) said he would arrest anyone caught with a G17 under suspicion of being a terrorist. So I as actually taking quite a bit of heat just for owning a pistol that gun people wanted to ban. Now years later, just about every law enforcement agency in the U.S. carries them...in spite of the crazed Sheriff and Bruce Willis, I ended up with the last laugh...even to this day.

xxcdemon08 Country fudds, but fudds all the same. Back then you could pick up a REAL H&K91 from VF Volmar through Shotgun News for about $660. The guys I bought the G17 from, had an ammo can of 250 rds. of 7.62 NATO. Surplus from the 60’s primarily. I bought the whole can, in order to break my new 91. The first thing they asked was “what country are you planning on taking over?” I realized it was a waste of time explaining it to them and headed off to the range. Sighting that 91 in required a stubby phillips screw driver and a locking tool that would allow you to adjust the rear sight for elevation. Once dialed in that rifle was amazingly accurate. I voted for Bush sr. back then and the dick turned around and made the import ban...talk about a fudd. Hold onto your freedoms, once lost , they aren’t going to give them back...

I'm mostly interested in this pistol because it's a no-frills, back-to-basics Glock. I like the Gen 5's, but it's a lot of money to buy a new slide without those forward serrations. I don't need all the grip adjustments or ambidextrous stuff. Glocks are appealing to me for their simplicity, and the original P80/G17 is perhaps the simplest Glock.

Enjoyed this review. I like that it has a finger cutout so you can get a proper grip on the mag if you get a double feed jam. I cannot understand why this feature was deleted from current production Gen3 G17 pistols (good chance this deletion will result in the Gen3 G17 being deleted from California's list of approved handguns that can be legally sold in that state). I like the P80 grip but would prefer a G17 with an accessory rail, frame reinforcing pin for use with overpressure +P+ ammo, and extractor with the loaded chamber indicator.

I think the story about Austrian soldiers sharpening their field knives with Glock slides is a myth. On my last Militia training I asked some old soldiers and nobody knew about it. Not that many carry a P80 in the first place. There might have been some cases, but I don't think it was common practice und if a superior would get wind of it you probably would get punished. On the other side, soldiers doing stupid stuff I think cleaning the plastic furniture of the Stg77 in the dishwasher is done more frequent. The P80 we shot a month ago looked like a generation 3 to me. As you said it had the ÖBH circle and upstanding triangle on slide, barrel and grip. It had the normal metal plate on the front section of the grip but no serialnumber on it. Best regards from AUT.

The slide on the Glock P80 sure seems like it has the current production gas process ferritic nitrocarburization finish that is used on the Gen3 models. The finish on the P80 is NOT the inferior nDLC finish that is used on the inferior Gen5 models I cannot find any documentation on the P80 from Glock that states that the P80 uses the inferior nDLC finish. The Gen3 slide on the P80 sure appears to use the same finish as current production Gen3 models. The wear patterns on the slide of the P80 do NOT share the same problems as the Gen5 nDLC inferior finish. The ferritic nitrocarburization process for the Gen3 or P80 is NOT banned. The process started out using a salt bath method and was changed to a gas or plasma process. nDLC is just a dumb firearm finish, no matter what the marketing people at Glock lie about. Ferritic nitrocarburization is NOT banned, and it is the most common firearm finish for this market of handguns. Gun companies can make up whatever new bee ess marketing names they want to make up; it is ferritic nitrocarburization. If someone has actual documentation from Glock that the P80 does use the inferior nDLC finish on the Gen5 models, not the good ferritic nitrocarburized finish on the Gen3 models, please let me know. Thanks.

The VP70 was supposedly designed to a price point to be a resistance occupation pistol for the German civilians to use should the USSR or other communist country in the Warsaw Pact invade and occupy Germany. There are still P80s online ranging from around $830-$1050 after shipping and FFL fees. The VP70 reminds me of a Hi Point, only with a really terrible trigger, a much much higher price tag, no spare parts, no warranty, and not quite as much of "why bother factor" for collectibility as a Hi Point. At least the Hi Point has spare parts and a very good warranty. It's still a Hi Point, but they are both straight blowback poly frame pistols with pot metal clunky high mass slides.

If so they’d use 7 round old school mags and not be able to feed anything besides 230gr FMJ. If that is the case then I’d be fine with it. I don’t know anything about magpul T-shirts The retro chuck taylors basically look exactly like the old ones right? That’s the problem. This gun barely shares anything in common with the real p80. Doesn’t even have the correct markings or correct magazines. It’s just a modern Glock with a retro paint job, essentially. What is the point?

Makaan The Sajuuk-Khar retro sells. This looks like a gen 1 Glock. Even says p80 on it, which is unprecedented for American release. That further adds to retro credibility. So when fools say “look! A worse Glock!” I shake my head.
