@jondude1 They up the cost, because wholesale price on a 17M is over 100 dollars more than a standard 17... Thats why the MSRP was set at $753.99. ...also, they were/are special order only, so they wouldn't mistakenly get one in, and sell it at the standard 17 price without knowing how much they had in it.

I recently was able to buy a SCHP 17M. It was from a retired LT. And she sold her gun to a local gun store. It has several of the FBI features. It has the NDLC finish on the trigger bar. It has the 5M barrel. It also does not have the extended slide stop and it has a rounded magazine release. It was made in Austria. Seems like SCHP has some features from the from both the FBI and Lipsey’s guns.

What the "M" stands for has been debatable since it is not specified in the original RFP. Some say "Military", some say "Modified". Adding to that, a certain Glock vendor now sells the actual versions with the nDLC coatings and the "Miami" barrel with the "M" stamp on its hood. Those are available to purchase through the Blue Label program with the same SKU as the original FBI pistols, although all are now Austrian made. Also, early standard Gen5 models have the magazine cutout and lacked front serrations.

Enjoyed your in depth detail. I was around when changed 45 to 9mm in 80s. I liked the extra shots (though I love 1911)and remember silver tips spread and functioned well! Amazing 30 years to figure out what many argued then, 9 had good recoil, control and just hit the target! Didn't like shooting Glock when came out, but looking at it now for simple, reliable, price & track record.

Howdy - Great presentation! I would add one other change that I have seen on the Gen 5’s. History: Glock 22 and 23 were tested by my agency years ago and the test weapons catastropicly failed between 6,000 and 8,000 rounds. Glock remodeled both models by adding a reinforcement in the form of another cross pin behind the locking block in the G22’s and G23’s. Those pins are found on Glock Gen IV’s, but not the Gen 5’s. Not to worry though because, as far as I know, there were no such failures on the pre - .40 S&W glock 9mm’s.

The 19x dosen't need a specific magazine. It fits any 9mm Glock factory or aftermarket magazine aside from Gen 5 magazines, but even the Gen 5 magazines work with a small modification to either the magwell or the baseplate of the magazine.

FYI… The early versions of the Gen 5 17 & 19 had the crescent cutout on the bottom front of the grip frame just like the 17M (as well as Gen 1 & Gen 2). It was removed after customer feedback. Another difference of the early Gen 5’s was the smooth slide. Forward cocking serrations appeared about the same time that the crescent cutout disappeared. The earliest Gen 5’s were much closer to the M models. Just sayin’.

Great video, as per the usual, thanks! My two favorite Glocks now are both Gen 5 Glocks: the Glock 45 and the Glock 34. The 34 Gen 5s eliminated the large relief "hole" on the top of the slide and in my opinion, the sight radius advantage plus the elimination of that stupid huge hole makes it a great duty weapon. The Glock 45 feels great when you shoot it. It has the full sized grip (important for my huge hands) and full capacity Glock magazines, etc. Great for competition, duty and defense.

I can attest that the new Gen 5 barrels are considerably more accurate than previous generations. The barrel in my Gen 5 G26 is every bit as accurate as the match barrel I have in my model 19. Maybe I got a magic barrel, but I noticed the same accuracy potential in the test and evaluation pistols my agency sent by Glock, the models 19 and 45, both Gen 5. The model 48 they sent was also impressive as far as it's average accuracy over previous generation barrels. Glock finally solved one of their cons.

I have a Glock Gen 4 17MOS that I really like, with a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro sight. I bought the Gen 4 model back when the Gen 5 models were first coming out, and I was afraid of getting a “weaker” gun since the Gen 5 pistols lacked the extra locking block pins that the Gen 4 models had, as I was used to having locking blocks and pins break periodically on the Glock models 22 and 23 that my police department had used when I had been an armorer, albeit that had been when they had been Gen 3 guns and the Gen 4 had not come out yet. Now I will admit that the .40 S&W cartridge is a lot higher pressure than a 9mm, but that doesn’t stop me from worrying about it, lol. I have waited to see if Glock will bring out Gen 5 10 mm or 40 S&W models, but haven’t seen any yet. Oh well, lol. I guess if I want another 9mm I can get a Glock 45 MOS, but if I want a 10 mm I may have to get a Gen 4 still. Oh well.

John Phillips yep, my only complaint. Makes you wonder what’s going on at Glock. Bad finishes, the G44 was a dumb venture being it can’t compete with a M&p 22 or the Taurus tx22. They need to go back to the old finish.

I couldn't agree any more. There also appears to be some machining differences with the slide where the muzzle exits. The barrel skips around on the Gen5 in a way that is very different than previous models.

The redesign of the striker tip was to help the next cartridge slide up the breechface easier as the striker tip could be protruding from the breechface as the next new round was making its way up the breechface. Shadow Systems not only changed their design as Glock changed theirs, but also added a 2nd striker spring to retract the striker so that it wasn't sticking out of the breechface as the new round was attempting to be seated against the breechface.
@alanmeyers3957
@alanmeyers3957 4 ай бұрын
When the gen 5 slide is unlocked, the striker is now a floating design and not locked in the forward position as on previous generations, I’m surprised that he didn’t mention that.

Excellent. Slide stops were offered in std and extended, shooters choice. Early ones had Trijicon sights, it went to Ameriglow bc of cost. They were also Austria made with full production in US. Current production has the front slide and frame bevel, early ones had a squared lower. What is unconfirmed, is that the barrels had a tighter chamber tolerance than other agency Ms, trade off of performance vs reliability.

Good video, however a few corrections to some of the info. Just to add some validity to my claims, I am a Glock certified Armorer (yea that doesn't mean much), however I have 3+ years of experience in a gun store doing custom work, warranty work, and general trouble shooting. I also was part of the sales team selling Glock pistols of all models to customers. I don't know everything, but I do have a passion for collecting these pistols and the minor changes that nobody notices. Alright with that crap out of the way, here are the corrections I have for the information presented. 1: I do not recall seeing the marksman barrel designs in the G42/G43 pistols before the Gen5's hit the market.. After that I started seeing them in the guns, and they are currently what is sold with them. They may have started to put them in the G42/G43 once the M series guns were adopted. However they probably would not have been sold until near the Gen5 release date. 2: The Gen5 pistols, specifically the early ones, have the same frame design as best I can tell as the M pistols. The first batch of Gen5 pistols sold have the front cutout for magazine removal. They also have the non-beveled front of the frame, where it does not match the slide. 3: the G19X does not need a specific magazine to function, it needs a specific floor plate design. The G19X will not allow Gen5 style mags with the extended floor plate to fit into the grip. This is due to the extended front strap on the G19X interfering with that extended lip on the floor plate. Previous generation G17/G34 magazines will work due to them having the standard baseplate. You can also make your Gen5 mags fit by using the older style floor plates on them. 4: When I took the armorer's course after the Gen5's hit the market, the instructor offered one explanation for the new firing pin design. He said it had to do with the use of newer "Green Ammunition" or environmentally friendly non lead based ammunition. he said some of the primers these ammo types utilized were not fully reliable with old striker design. I have no idea if that is true. If anyone reading this has another explanation or more info on that subject please share it. 5: The rail on the Generation 5 guns is actually 1913 sized. Where the older Gen3 and Gen4 used a proprietary "Glock Slot" (not an official term) which is actually slightly smaller than a 1913 rail slot. This is why on weapon lights there is a specific Glock Locking bar and a separate 1913 locking bar. Side Notes: You are absolutely correct that the fire control mechanism (including firing pin, and firing pin safety designs) for the G43/G42 influenced the Gen5/M development. The S-Springs definitely are a weaker point in current production guns. Typically I have seen them break at the hook ends. The leaf spring for the Slide Lock was definitely a weaker point, especially on older models. Earlier Glocks such as Gen2's or Gen1's had a much thinner profile which was beefed up to the current design. Also the worst part of the design was if the stem that went into the frame broke off inside the frame. such a problem will prevent you from inserting a new one, and it is hard to remove such a piece. A rare breakage but I have seen it a couple times. The increased length of the Recoil Spring on the Gen5 series guns is in my opinion to do with the desire of Glock to consolidate parts manufacture, and potentially match MHS submission goals (not sure if the MHS trials predate the M series development or not). Glock used the G19 Locking Block as the basis (part# 7894), so the G17Gen5, G19Gen5, and G19X all share that same part. This goes in line with what the military wanted with the MHS program with the same frame but interchangeable slides between the M17 and M18. This same system would be used on the G47 for DHS.

Great points. I have the same Glock Armorer's certification, and it is great to hear more people understand how weak the Glock certification is. Some armorers are great, but the certification means nothing by itself. I was told that the rounded nose firing pin was changed to the circular design for reliability with the G26 design. I never saw a problem with the original design. Many of the stories in Glock Armorer classes by the instructors are full of ess. I was about to comment on the same topics, but you did a great job. I did notice that after all the lawsuits Glock did fix the tooling for the trigger bar on the Gen5 models. The tooling is still crap, compared to the 1990's and earlier trigger bars where the trigger bar had an extra grinding operation at the sear surface. The defective Glock parts are now poorly blanked, and that is one of the reasons why the trigger feel is so inconsistent and crappy. Thanks for the well thought out comments.

All G42 & G43 pistols have the Marksman Barrel, gen 5/17-M trigger group (minus ambi slide stop) and improved firing pin safety and new firing pin design. The design of these two model never change, even after the Gen 5 released. I have a pre release Gen 5, this has the correct Gen 5 frame. Glock could have used over run G17M frames for some Gen 5 production. You are correct about the G19X floor plate. However, this does cause compatibility issues with the 19X. Most people buy complete magazines so this is my point. There is a compatibility difference..

The early Slimline G42 and G43 models had almost the GMB. The Slimline rifling was different, but the machining of the crown was added later as a running change. The 33564 connector to correct the lawsuits was also added as a silent running change. The early G42 and G43 models had a newer barrel a 1/2 generation before the current GMB design.

@@johnphillips222 Yes on the barrels. Definitely did not add the crown until after the Gen5's were being sold. I did forget about the rifling pattern. I have a G43 serial # prefix of BKSV which has the newer rifling but not the match crown. It also does not have the pentagon mark shown in the video.

@@SmallArmsSolutions Are you referring to the Gen5 Glock used for demonstration in the video as the Pre-Release model? That gun does not look like any early Gen5 pistol I have ever handled, sold, or the one I own. The one compared to the M series gun in the video is an MOS model, and has all the newest tweaks to the design. These are the front serrations, beveling of the frame dust cover, and filling in the front strap cut out for magazine removal. I know for fact Glock used the same frame design from the M series guns for at least the first batch of sold Gen5 guns. They also beveled the front of the frames to match the slide profile before they filled in the front strap cut out.

That Glock barrel with lans and grooves was not designed for the FBI. It was designed for the Miami-Dade police dept. in Miami, Florida. It was my department that did the study and we found it was very hard to identify what barrel or gun the projectile came from. The FBI just looked at our study, agreed with it and they made it a prerequisite. Glock first called those barrels Miami barrels. I have a gen 3 Glock with that barrel. Also, Glock redesigned and adopted their double recoil spring set-up because of us also. We carried Winchester ranger T series 124gr +P+ ammunition and Glock redesigned the spring for us and later adopted it to all their guns. I remember Glock reissued us the double springs and we all had to go to the dept. armorer to get the new spring installed.

michael leon sir, what your Department studied, this has been common knowledge well over 20 years. I started in internship in 1998 and it was common knowledge. This far predates Miami study. Glock has had requests for conventional rifled barrels for this reason. According to the folks I interviewed, the FBI wanted their new generation pistols to be identifiable. From what I see, the Marksman barrels are. The whole story, I don’t know if I have it all. Glock is very tight lipped on it. Their claims for the new barrel is quite different from what the Feds said I spoke to. For me, it came down to the comparative scope. If the identification of fired projectiles was not a goal for the 17M, it is one hell of a coincidence!

That coil spring has always vexed me. My normal trigger job on a Glock is a minus connecter and a NY-1 trigger spring (olive). It might slightly increase the pull weight but gets rid of the sponge to the wall. I don't particularly like the fact that Glock is setting on the DLC trigger bar but since they are the LEGO of the pistol world I am sure someone will produce a part to take my money. I'll will leave you with a question can we call the 17 M the Goverment Model...? Yehaa from East TN

Great video, Chris! So there actually is a difference in the trigger guard (M/Gen5 vs Gen1-4) where it meets up with the frame? Is it somewhat minor?.......when I compared a G5 with a G4 in store I didn’t think I saw a difference. Is there still a high propensity for “Glock knuckle” with the M/Gen5 ?
@johnphillips222

The picture of the FBI flavor of the 17M appeared to show a radiused trigger guard. Other versions of the 17M showed the same defective Glock trigger guard design. All the Gen1-5 and Slimline pistols have the defective trigger guard design that causes Glock knuckle. My engineering friends and I ran a test with 5000 frame/second high speed video to see why the Glock trigger guard sucks so badly. Counter recoil is the issue as the slide enters battery. The undercut trigger guard modification doesn't work, but it does have the full placebo effect. The real fix is recontouring the trigger guard to push on the middle finger at the middle of the trigger guard. The nylon welding works well. The so-called internet experts call me a clocksucker and other homosesual slurs for not developing a thick skin. Idiots. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.

I like 9mm and it's now a sensible, effective round. However, I'm a little more accurate with 45. I like the recoil characteristics. I'll still keep a 45 around in a HK platform. And if forced to use FMJ, I'd opt for 45. Though, some of that new military 9mm 115 +p FMJ flatnose (M1152) would be nice to have.

Large front are obnoxious and look full deck. Peace IS measured, an not just in meters, but in all aspects of r&d, manufacturing, testing, and practice, of every wespons system, from spears, to anti-satellite weapons. No measurements, no peace.
