I saw this magnificent, although staggeringly tragic film at a pivotal time of my youth. It had a profound effect on me at the time.

A beautiful film but dark story of exploitation. The music is wonderful. Brings me right back to when I lived in Norwich during 1988-1993.

I can't bring more letters cause you harlots have destroyed my illusion of faithfulness in truth and love. The final scene of this movie nailed it.

@@stevenmarler5154I politely disagree as in the final scene he was belittled and harauged for not being like them....meaning they were adulterous sex addicts....but he knowing sex and love are separate wanting love true love : He was so damaged by them he really never grew up.....but they don't make movies like this any more I was young when i saw it and cried at the end....but God bless you.and thanks for your reply.

This is a tragedy that happened to all boys and girls. We witnessed all perfidy, affairs around us and kept silent .Not up to us to past judgemt on the morals of other people. The emotional cruelty that went with it in this book and film is invaluable observance lessons for our adulthood 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

He is perfectly aware of what is going on. But he does not move a finger of his one hand to spare the boy. The perfect cruelty and indifference of the gods in the olympe, truly no one could play it better then Edward Fox. Terrific masterpiece, hopeless.

He's perfectly aware? Really? Where in the film (or the book) is it revealed that Lord Trimingham is aware that Marion is having an affair with Ted Burgess and using Leo to deliver love letters to him. Where?

@@spinynorman1562 Nowhere, of course. The cruel one is Marian, but she is herself a victim of her class, sex and times. Victims make victims, that's the deep truth of this extraordinary book, and film.
