@@xPrincessPandora What is your source for saying that Margot Olavarria and/or Elissa Bello were cowriters with Charlotte Caffey on "We Got the Beat?" I have seen multiple interviews with Margot about her days with the band--she never makes a claim to have written or co-written this song (she does claim to have contributed to "How Much More," though). I have never seen any claim that Elissa Bello did any songwriting at all. The 1980 single version of the song released by Stiff Records, which was made when Margot was still with the band, lists Charlotte as the sole songwriter.

Sadly, the Rock Hall of Fame is not a public entity. If so, the GoGos would've been in there years ago. Instead, the RHF is Jann S. Wenner's private club. And he lords over it like Spanky McFarland, deciding who can and cannot come into Our Gang's secret hideout.

I can remember when this song hit the airwaves in 1980, my older Sister, Susan and I, went to the music store in McMinnville, Oregon and she bought this cassette! As soon as we got back into her car, she opened it up and put it in the tape deck player and we cranked it up!!Susan just loved the Go Go’s and she wore that cassette out constantly playing it over and over until we learned the lyrics to the songs! I have the KZbin app on my Roku device and it’s on auto play and the song “Head over Heels popped up and started playing and so many wonderful and amazing memories of my Sister came flooding back to me! Susan was killed in a car accident at the age of 25 years old on May 1st, 1981 and every time I listen to this song and several others, it’s like she’s sitting next to me rocking out! RIP Sue, I love you and I miss you so so much! 💕🙏💕

RIP to your sister and all our beloved memories.
@woodrude78

Sorry to hear about your sister, I'm sure the loss is still keenly felt. I know everyone can get nostalgic in regards to music but it really is a wonder how certain songs evoke the strongest and often happiest memories of people we've lost. I can sit back now and try to remember my grandparents, uncle, friends etc but its just fleeting memories that are tough to hold on to but play certain songs and its like your back with them in happier times, vivid memories and you can remember so much more, until we humans build a time machine music can do the job just fine!

"We Got the Beat" is a song by American rock band The Go-Go's, written by lead guitarist and keyboardist Charlotte Caffey. The band first recorded the song in 1980 for a single on UK-based Stiff Records, then re-recorded it for their debut album Beauty and the Beat on IRS Records. The single's initial release brought the Go-Go's underground credibility to their first tour of the UK and the band's hometown of Los Angeles. The first version reached No. 35 in the US Hot Dance Club Playgraphic due to its popularity in clubs as an import, and the second version was one of the top 10 hits in the United States and Canada. It is considered a classic New Wave hit, in addition to being Go-Go's signature song. The song's lyrics mention various dances from the early 1960s such as the Pony, Watusi, and the Go-Go dance. The music video for the song, filmed in a live performance at Palos Verdes High School in Los Angeles, Calif. On December 4, 1981, was broadcast widely on MTV at the time. It gained visibility when it was used in the opening sequence for Amy Heckerling's film Fast Times at Ridgemont High, released in August 1982.

They wished they were punk till they went to England and got spit on for being inauthentic onstage. They weren’t close to an anti-establishment band. That’s what punk was about, Sex Pistols, Susie and The Banshees, etc. The Go-Gos were a trendy Valley Girl band with fun, corny pop singable songs. Ppl love that, but they couldn’t handle that label cause they wanted more respect for the writers and musicians talent. They were respected that way, but the songs were still considered Valley Girl Pop. They didn’t write, “Our lips r sealed”. Someone in England did, and Jane made some changes in it.

I was into metal, rock and punk back in those days but loved this group. And when I went to buy a bass guitar and amp I used Kathy Valentine as the example of the sound I was going for. PERFECT bass sound on their early stuff.

Great performance of great song by great band. Regret not seeing them live, they give off so much energy. I wonder if the video is a little fast from the looks of the stage movements and Jane's dancing. Playing the video at 0.90-0.95 made the stage movements look more natural.
