The Goat man would travel along state route Hwy. 136 through North West Georgia ( Calhoun / Sugar valley ) countryside back in the early & mid 60s . I was just a pre teen boy but got to meet this soft spoken gentle natured man several times. My grand parents would always take him whatever food they had available. He was camping down by the spring in Sugar valley one year and someone shot and killed one of his goats with a bow and arrow. I remember him as always allowing the folks in and around our community to visit and pet his goats. He was always very welcoming to all.

Awesome story! Only God knows how many people may have been saved by the "Goat Man" shining the light to those he met. We all fall short of the Glory of God, but he certainly seemed to have given it his best shot regarding Jesus' great commission... Mark 16:15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” ... and if anyone is interested in reading the greatest historical account of all times, read or listen to The Gospel of John. Thank you, Appalachian Storyteller, for bringing to us this wonderful account of the "Goat Man"!

Amen! Here's a quick story... Many years ago a man had recently came to his faith in Jesus. Filled with the Joy of the Lord, he gathered together his savings and rented out a local movie theater for a week or two to play "Chariots of Fire" for free to anyone who wanted to watch the movie. At the end of the film, he would call up anyone to the front of the theater who wanted to be saved. To his dismay, no one took the offer. But one man, who was on the fence, did wind up coming to the Lord shortly thereafter. That man wound up planting a Church and several sister Churches were raised to life from his Church. Many years later that man was at a Christian conference as he heard one of the speakers tell his story of renting the movie theater and how in spite of his efforts, no one came to be saved. Needless to say, the man who planted the Church shared his testimony with him. That story always raises goose pimples, just as it is for me as I'm typing this.

My great grandfather Homer Walls, and his son my grandfather Howard Walls, both of Commerce GA. told me of this man when I was just a lad of 12. I'm 68 now but I remember the stories. My grandparents, the Walls clan were Holiness Pentecostal Christians and the majority of their social lives were through the Church with fellow church members and family. They often spoke of this 'Goat Man' coming through and preaching the gospel. As nothing much exciting ever happened around these parts and radio was a new thing his team of goats stood out in contrast to horses, mules, or automobiles. They spoke as if they had been recent occurrences and I was always enthralled to listen to their stories.

Oh how I remember seeing the goat man in Columbus, GA, as a young boy.... I'm guessing in the early 60's. I wanted to stop and pet the goats, but mama said that they were too nasty. What a spectacle! Thanks for bringing this memory back for me.

My grandparents lived along Highway 41 in Georgia. I saw the Goat Man several times. We could hear him coming, the clank of bells & his wheels on pavement. We would run to the highway to wave as he went by. It was a great treat for us children to see him pass by.

I remember him well. We’d occasionally pass him as we drove through rural Georgia. Even though it was only for a few seconds, we were delighted to see him, his laden cart, and his team of goats. Thanks for the memory.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story and re-igniting the fading embers of my childhood memories of once visiting the Goatman at his campsite in the mid 1960s and seeing him traveling down the edge of the hwy. on several other occasions. I had not thought of these times in an untold number of years. ❤

Growing up in Cleveland Tennessee, I remember when the Goat Man would come through town. He could certainly draw a crowd.

I heard of the goat man when I was a kid. I had no idea he lived in my hometown (Macon, GA). I had assumed, having heard this from my relatives only, that he was another Appalachian fellow with no geographic connection to my own life. Having died in ‘98 he was still living in Macon long after my family had told me about him. I was a teenager when he died. That crazy!

My father told me about meeing the Goat Man some years ago and how he'd come through Douglasville, GA (some 30 miles west or so of Atlanta) preachin' the way of the Lord. What an incredible story!

I remember hearing he went through town on 25W north, pretty sure it was in the mid-60's...sadly, I missed seeing him.. Happy to know he had a long and meaningful life...sad to know how cruel people can be. Wonderful testament to a free spirit on a mission! Thanks JD 😎👍

ABSOLUTELY i do remember him and the goats coming through our town in south Alabama. He stayed a few days at the road side park, "today they're called a rest area". If I remember correctly he had some people with him traveling in a car. He did draw a crowd but i never saw preaching going on . 🐐

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller hasn't changed much . Neither has Turtletown, where I'm from. Love Coker Creek and Tellico. Moved to North Georgia in early Nineties to manage a farm. Too much traffic and building of rental cabins here, but my husband's farm is home now. Don't want to move again. Besides we'd be like Jed Clampett, moving all our livestock 😂

I remember the Goat Man coming through Rome, GA sometime in the early 60's. I don't know if he preached or not but he was camped on the side of the highway and we stopped and talked to him.

The Goat Man was a little before my time but I remember hearing the old timers talk about him coming through north Alabama back in the day. I was just a kid when he retired from the road but you still hear people mention him occasionally even now. Fascinating guy!

Daddy drove us 18 miles in his old car to Camden SC to see the goat man. He did stink and I was scared to death of him. After that, we were told the goat man would get us if we misbehaved. I was about 5 or 6 then. I never heard any information about him until you posted this. Thanks for the memory.

I remember the goat man would travel through Roseville Ga. and my grandfather would take me to see him. usually my grandfather would buy something from him for me. I always asked for candy. as a child of around 5 or 6 yrs old I was scared of the strange man that lived in a wagon pulled by goats but I was fascinated with him. I seem to remember having my picture taken with him, I need to look for it. I really enjoyed the documentary about him,it brought back good memories that I had forgotten. thank you for bringing them back
