God Of War came out in 2005, and quickly took the World by storm. So much so that it spawned an entire generation of imitators. So I thought it would be interesting to take a look at those imitators, but then I realized there are so many God of War knockoffs that I'm going to have to start small. So today we're covering five individually wrapped God Of War knockoffs. starting with Castlevania Lords of Shadow, then Sonic unleashed, Then darksiders, followed by Dante's inferno, and finally a mystery game. The mystery of why I have a mystery game will be revealed in the video, don't spoil it for yourself. this Genie won't go back into the bottle.

If you weren’t wowed by darksiders 1’s combat but still enjoyed the game as a whole you should totally give darksiders 2 a shot. The combat in ds 2 is fantastic, it’s faster, with better difficulty balance. It also has more great puzzle design, plus some new much better prince of Persia esc platforming, and Diablo esc rpg mechanics. With the exception of maybe story I think ds2 is an phenomenal upgrade/evolution of the first game. Overall it’s the best game in the series imo.

You gave it a shot, pointed out what you liked, and basically pointed out all the complaints I have with the game too, despite me loving it, so that’s great, and I’m very much hoping the Sonic fans that don’t understand what ‘opinion’ means don’t get all angry in the comments. Darksiders is very beloved as a series to my understanding, but the games themselves are quite divisive between titles. What one person likes, another may hate-- and the inverse. Or you might be more in the "eh" regions of how you consider one of the titles. Nevertheless, i think they're all on the good side of things with interesting things to offer, and I do love the series with all my heart. Another thing I'd argue separates The DMCs from the GoWs is the way combat plays a role. In God of War types, its about racking up the combo hits, mashing buttons like a maniac and dealing with great hordes of enemies while being an unstoppable force. Combos in these games are also very, dial-a-combo style in that they follow a pattern starting with light attacks and alternating between heavy attacks and so on and so forth. DMC style games require more from the player during combat. Combos can be canceled into other moves and dodges and the games want the player to be more creative and expressive with combat. It's that freedom of expression and expectation of creativity that truly separates the DMCs from GoWs. Not saying one is better than the other, but I definitely prefer the DMC style of combat.

GOW and DMC have completely different combat systems. GOW combat is based on Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden, where you mix light and heavy attacks to make combos and have an easier dodge, whereas DMC is more about timing your attacks to make different combos and using firearms to control space. DMC's combat system is more complex, but the camera angles and control scheme is trash compared to GOW. DMC is harder than GOW because it has a worse camera and erratic direction-based attacks. It feels more like a 2D fighter in 3D spaces. GOW combos are absurdly easy but there's no denying it has a better gameplay design overall, and that helps the player a lot.

For Sonic Unleashed the ps2 version seems to fix most of the problems you mentioned before. The framerate was pretty fine, hub world was way different, it was more like you clicked on different areas to talk to people in a dialogue window like a visual novel, I also do not remember a skyscraper mission in it. It would be a game where you control a god of war killing other greek gods while being angry and having the same type of gameplay and also being of worse quality. The moment you change IP, setting, gameplay, story, etc it stops being a "knockoff". Yeah, that happened to me too in Unleashed, the whole shock wave knocking you off the building. Best way to avoid that is to simply get away from it as it's preparing to jump instead of just continuing to whale on it. Then just jump over the incoming shockwave, get back in and continue attacking. You technically can block the jump but not without enough shield meter as it'll just eat through the shield if that's the case. You'll also probably still get hit by his jumping while doing aerial combos, further solidifying that the best tactic against that move is just to simply back off. Yes, Sonic Unleashed is one of my favorite games of all time and no, I don't intend to criticize how you play or feel about the game. I just wanted to point it out. I absolute love Chip for the reasons you say you hate him for as a character so I just disagree in that regard and that's great! I do agree in that the game could've used more revising as I didn't even consider how much it would've benefitted or not from excluding the lives system! I completely respect and appreciate your opinion.

Think your assesment of Unleashed's Daytime Stages are the most legit analysis I've seen of standard Sonic gameplay from a newcomer. Also, as someone who loves Unleashed, no one will blame you for calling it quits in Skyscraper Scamper cause even before that final enemy encounter, falling into instant death was the norm for that level. The saddest part is, Empire City isn't even plot relevant...like at all.

Since you asked for the Tiamat Boss you actually can just melee her after the bombs are gone, her stun state is triggered by damage in general you don't have to use the crossblade, it's safe but slow whereas stick and moving with melee is risky but fast. Silitha actually doesn't have that much health it's just she has a lot of poorly communicated phase transitions that make it seem like she has more health than she really does. Roughly one combo not even a full one will progress one phase and once that damage quota is met she seems to become immune until you hookshot her again, which is why she seems to have a lot of health but really doesn't. I've consistently been able to kill her quickly with only a small handful of basic attacks on multiple playthroughs but landing the more damaging stuff doesn't make the fight go any faster. Also for as intimidating as her attacks are you actually have more time than it appears to dodge so long as you don't succumb to deer in headlights syndrome and or dodge in the wrong direction, I.E. don't dodge directly backwards for her lunging attack dodge to the side. Think of her as less fo a boss and more of a timing/pattern puzzle, that simple change in mentality takes her from very hard to cakewalk. I know you probably won't replay the game but you asked if you were doing anything wrong so I figured I'd at least try to answer that to the best of my ability, since I've played through the game multiple times.

Dispite them being knockoffs or took huge inspiration of God of war. I gotta say I love the games. Specially castlevania lords of shadow series. It's a series that actually got me into castlevania in general and helps with the fact it's a hack n slash with deep story and characters, lore. Definitely what got me into it. Also love darksiders. All I gotta say. Still waiting on strife stand alone game. With him being a gunslinger character. I wonder if it be a first person shooter game lol. Would make sense. But thing is. I feel if they did that for strife they probably be taking inspiration from doom and shadow warrior alot. Though regardless I think they need to bring the game series back to hack n slash genre like darksiders 1 or 2. I loved 3. But I like the hack n slash style gameplay in 1 and 2. Also I wouldn't be surprised if they took inspiration from devil may cry to extent. Like God of War. Devil may cry also defined the hack n slash genre.

Games are so interesting like this. Devil May Cry was a big genre defining game that got a lot of its own knockoffs, but it also led to unique games that simply took inspiration while creating something unique, like God of War, and then GoW in turn got it's own set of knock-offs, that in some sense, can still be traced back to DMC. It's a weird sort of pipeline. Also it's funny to me that Castlevania had a DMC game (Lament of Innocence) and a GoW game.

Good on you for making a video about a franchise you’re proud of. It takes a lot of time and effort to make these and a strong passion. There are going to be those that disagree however, and I unfortunately disagree with most, if not the whole premise of the video. Especially when the claim is that if a game takes inspiration from God of War and replicates certain aspects, then its deemed a knock off, but if God of War does the same, it took inspiration from its predecessors. I don’t have anything against the God of War, but thats a pretty arrogant claim. As one who designs and builds games in hopes to release one in the future, there’s already a huge feeling for the need to be original and not copy something existing. It gets to the point where you question if you actually came up with an interesting original idea or if you just missed something obscure and later, the masses will start calling your creation a clone or a knock off. Frankly, its incredibly insulting to those who put the effort in to making something fun, its discouraging to those of us who are trying to take steps to one day make something that could be great like God of War, and, unless the distinction between two titles was so blurred that it would border plagiarism, I would be more flattered that someone took inspiration from a game I made rather than brush it off as a simple knock off. Like I said, I know making videos takes a lot of time and effort, but try not to brush off the efforts of those putting in arguably more time and more effort themselves. Unless I grossly misinterpreted the intention of your video, then I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Okay, so I'm going to try and level with you. I understand that it must be frustrating as a game developer to constantly have your work be compared to that of other people's. But with all due respect, I think you've fallen at the first hurdle here in that you're taking this video way too seriously. It was never supposed to be a serious assessment on a game's worthiness to exist based around its inspirations. The fact is, this is just a video meant to highlight how God of War inspired the industry for a time, because I think it's interesting to see how games that take heavy inspiration from a popular title are able to separate themselves. But more than anything, this video is just supposed to be light entertainment. To your claim about arrogance, I'll just say this, inspiration is a spectrum. You see, I'm using knockoff as a find and replace for the phrase "heavily inspired" because knockoff is a much snappier way to put it. It admittedly makes some things get lost in translation, but that's the price you pay for being succinct. I think it's fairly self-evident what quantifies being inspired, and what quantifies being heavily inspired. God of war and Devil May Cry play similarly, but they feel much different. God of War didn't "do the same thing" as Devil May cry. Contrarily, Dante's Inferno plays the same and has many identical elements to god of war including the HUD. But in keeping with the theme about not taking this too seriously, I said multiple times in the video, who cares as long as it's good? Basically, I understand where you're coming from, and I respect your point, but I think you've grabbed the wrong end of the wrong stick here, and I think you need to take a step back and really question if any of this even matters. Because really, it's all just entertainment.

Castlevania has a long history of 3D games dating back to the Nintendo 64. In fact, one of my favorites, lament of Innocence, was in production and released before the first God of war. God of war took a lot of liberties with that game's combat system. And Lords of shadows combat system is way deeper than any God of war game. And people always tend to forget about devil May cry being years ahead of any god of war game. God of war was not the first one to do in over the top action game and it's quite annoying that every third person action game gets compared to it. The 90s were Final Fight/Street fighter clones. God of War was that game. I played Dante's Inferno once. I remember enjoying it at the time, but it was missing that something that made me want to play it again. Some of it was that an hour into it, my first thought was "this is just Baby God of War"... and GOW still was releasing sequels regularly. And I liked GOW more. Although its existence as a shameless GOW clone is what people remember, I appreciate how you revisit it (and the other games) with care and depth...explicating all it's strengths and shortcomings. I don't think there's anyting wildly revolutionary about God of War. Stylized combat was already a thing with Devil May Cry before GOW even dropped.

Devil May Cry didn't create stylized combat. That idea was first introduced in Strider and Onimusha, and both games influenced Devil May Cry

For Tiamat, the only good aspect about her fight is her intro cutscene. That entire scene has amazing atmosphere. The lack of music with the sounds of rain on top of a church with Tiamat's thunderous leaps and wing flaps. Then top off her speech is War's one liner.

Dante's inferno was a truly excellent game with a fantastic story and cool boss fights such a shame EA didn't do more.

22:00 Not really, the most fondly remembered Sonic stories, dialogue and scenes come from stuff like the Adventure games and Black Knight, which makes you go "damn, they didn't need to go so hard for a family friendly mascot game but they did", i find Unleashed's story to be OK, but not nearly as high as the bar the series set for itself previously

Agreed, The Dialogue and Characterization of Sonic in Unleashed is just “Good” for me. Not Great but not Bad.

I’d say it’s at its best in Adventure 2 and Black Knight, SA1 is too goofy and kinda stupid imo.

@@SomeoneThatIsHappyTowards the end of the game sonic tells merlina (The girl u help through the game) that "Every world has its end, I know that's kinda sad but...that's why you gotta live life in the time we have, at least thats what I figure." Moments like these in the "dark age" sonic games are what made the fans miss that serious tone they to it. Nowadays sonic calling eggman bald mcnose hair and laughing about fart jokes...speaks for itself. Also earlier in that game knuckles was about to commit seppuku

Good video, and analysis in general. You almost convinced me to play Sonic hahaha. I just discovered your channel, you've earned yourself a subscriber. About Darksiders, you have to hit Tiamat once you get her to land, and about the spider, it's more of the same, but it requires you to dodge to the sides as soon as she appears above you, and then hit her.

Can’t believe they made a Belmont into Dracula. How insulting. At least the DmC Reboot game still respect the game’s original lore by following the characters’ originality.

I find Belmont turning into Dracula more tragic than insulting, with all the flaws that 2 may have it didn't shy away on how Gabriel pretty much suffered and keeps suffering in the sequel. I personally think this kinda storytelling is a bit more refreshing than the same song and dance we were used to in the past Castlevania games.

I mean, they made DmC Dante the offspring of a Demon and an Angel which is a very massive departure from mainline Dante which is the offspring of a Human and a Demon, and that change affected some of the themes and relatability of the original lore.

Never seen your vids before, but this was fantastic! I have Darksiders 1-3 because of free games over the years and never really played them long enough to get into them. I should do that. Definitely gonna check out more of your content! 🤙🏼

Darksiders is the only God Of War clone I liked the most, but wasn’t just a hack and slash game. It also had that Zelda style of gameplay too.

30:08 honestly as someone who absolutely loves this game, I will admit that it is sonic teams fault for not properly optimizing that enemy. The trick to beating that part is to wait for the purple slam ring (I guess) to disappear and then spam x to get back up again, trust me I was just as frustrated as you when I got to that part on my first playthrough

I honestly love every game on this list and i think they are beyond a knockoff, just like every game with an open world, cars and guns is a ''knockoff'' of GTA. Lords of Shadow is the best 3DVania i've played. Though i prefer LOS2 combat, but the story can go fuck itself. A 2010 game that holds up till this day in graphics and environment, while the story is one of the fell Castlevania games that they actually cared about it (Not that Castlevania needs to have a complex story, but the anime proved it can be good). Dante's Inferno i would say is more similar to LOS than God of War. A holy warrior on a personal crusade to get back the women he loves while going through different realms to face Lucifer. The difference is that while Dante goes on a path of redemption, Gabriel goes on a path of darkness. Unleashed depends on your mood to play. Day stages is the best part, fun as hell and everyone agrees, but the hub and night stages you'll have to be pacient, be invested to take some fun out of it. Story and characters are simple but it works, could be an Adventure 3 if they invested it more, but from what it is, it's not the best game but far from being the worse on the series

Personally, (and since LA Noire is from Rockstar as well), other than the earlier Saint's Row games, you can't really call open world games with vehicles and guns knockoffs of GTA. Nor is Mafia a knockoff of LA Noire, or vice versa.

I love the Lords of Shadow trilogy. I do agree that there were a couple levels in the early to mid game that could've been cut for time, but on the whole it was a great experience to come back to every few years. Edit: On God I FEEL you on that complaint about the lives system. Games with these super long levels with super finicky parts absolutely DO NOT need a lives system, and in fact are actively hindered by its inclusion (Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is a huge offender for this)
