FUN FACTS: The guy that played the monkey owner also played Barranca, the guy that tried to shoot Indy in the beginning of the movie. The woman that played the ghost at the end was none other than George Lucas' receptionist. Spielberg wanted more than just mannequins and puppets for the ghost scenes at the end so the production crew got Lucas' receptionist to play the part when you see her face change.

The great thing about the opening sequence is that barely anything is said in it. Spielberg gives you information by showing what Indiana Jones does instead of dumping exposition on the audience, like modern movies tend to do.

Supposedly, the way the idea for the movie came about was after George's success with Star Wars and Steven Spielberg's success with Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (and excellent sci-fi movie for people who don't generally go for that sort of thing), the two became friends and one day they were having lunch and talking about their next movies. George said he always liked the old "serial" adventures from his childhood and Steven said he had always wanted to make a movie where the main character gets chased by a giant boulder and so they hashed out the basic outline of such a movie during their dinner and the rest is history!

One of the Goat's!! My mom took me to see this on the big screen when it came out. She's passed on now so that is a treasured memory for me. The score, the action sequences, the cinematography, the practical effects...all still hold up well today. But back then this movie was new level. I'll never get tired if it, especially where Indy draws and shoots the swordsman out of sheer exasperation lol. Love it. That scene was improvised, btw. Harrison Ford said that he'd been sick all morning when they filmed it, and he did that out of sheer exasperation...that's why it was done so perfectly. Spielberg liked it so much that it made the final cut. Great reaction!

Nice video. Being a Star Wars fan, you may find the story behind the creation of the Indiana Jones franchise interesting. The story goes that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg talked through the character when they ran into each other on a beach in Hawaii. They were both were hiding out, trying to reenergize their creativity. Spielberg had just released a WW2 comedy box office flop called 1941. I kind of liked it, but I must have been the only person in the country who did. George Lucas was preparing to premiere a film that he was sure would also be a bomb. It was called Star Wars. They began reminiscing about the adventure serials and they'd seen as kids. The rest is history. Also, Indiana was the name of George Lucas's boyhood dog, the same one that served as inspiration for Chewbacca.

The scene where Indy shoots the man in black with the big sword, there was supposed to be a long sword fight sequence, but Harrison Ford was feeling sick that day and didn’t feel like doing the sword fight. After their 1st tryst, Indy said “see you tomorrow, Marion”. He was immediately afterwards confronted by her father, who put his ass on a plane and said never come back. 16 year old Marion was heartbroken. What we also see, that many didn't notice is that Indy was already drinking champagne and there were TWO glasses on the table. One he gave to Marcus and the other for himself. As it turns out Indy was entertaining a female guest when Marcus showed up and she hid in another room. It turns out that that young guest was the girl in his class with the LOVE YOU on her eyelids. Indy was gonna get lucky until Marcus cock blocked him with a government job. lol

Great reaction Madison! FYI there is a funny song from the 1970's called "Spiders and Snakes" by Jim Stafford. Its about a teenager trying to impress a girl by giving her some snakes and other creepy crawlers and in one case, a frog. She replies that she "don't like spiders and snakes, but that ain't what it takes to love me, you fool, you fool! I don't like spiders and snakes, but that aint what it takes to love me, like I wanna be loved by you!" Also, in the 1970's there was a "B" horror movie called "Frogs" where all snakes, frogs, spiders, and lizards began attacking humans in retalation for all the polution the latter had been causing. The updated versions of these type of films are "Eight Legged Freaks", "Snakes On a Plane", "Kingdom of the Spiders", and "Arachnophobia". All titles which I'm sure will go immediately to the top of your "must see" list, or at least your bucket list. 😁😉

It was the first thing I started to research when first getting online in 1998. At that time, those people were still alive and working. Now, most, if not all have passed on. I remember talking to Richard Swales, who trimmed and shaped Harrison's hat for this movie, and ordering one from him. I still have all that stuff. Hard to believe that Indy's shifty and unreliable helper (Alfred Molina) would go on many years later to play Spider-Man's foe "Doc Ock". Anyway, this movie is a perfect storm of the right actors, writers, director and special effects (that still hold up today). At first they were hesitant to use Harrison Ford because he was already well known as Han Solo, but after Tom Sellick couldn't do it (their second choice) due to his schedule for "Magnum P.I." they decided it would be okay. Good call, guys!

"Raiders" was Alfred Molina's first major movie role. He's done much more interesting things than to be draped with Tarantulas. This salute to theatrical short cliffhanger movies of the 1940's has enough action for THREE movies. It enticed a generation of college students to "dig in the dirt" as Archeologists. An iconic movie franchise that continues to this day; much better than "another James Bond movie," eh? Madison, you should check out the 1984 movie "Starman" w/ Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen (the woman in Ark). It's a good movie and it's right in any girl's wheelhouse insofar as romance, etc. It's a half-n-half guy/chick flick. Bridges gives one of his many great chameleon performances. Karen Allen was also in "Animal House" (1978). That should be mandatory for anyone college age or above, but you never know what the 20somethings have and haven't seen yet, but everyone likes that one. Impossible not to like.

Great reaction. If you're a fan of Harrison Ford you should also watch him in "Witness" as a Philly cop hiding out from corrupt cops in Amish country.

You miss the point of the last scene. The Ark was taking steps to protect/hide itself. Recall the beginning of the movie, when the city of Tanis disappeared in a single night? What better way to hide something than pack it away in a huge warehouse and lose the paperwork?

I feel she badly misses the point with the final scene. They're not trying to keep the Ark. On the contrary, they're having the good sense to re-bury it - not under desert sand this time, but under something even more impenetrable: United States bureaucracy. The whole point of that last shot is that the authorities have realised that the Ark must never see the light of day again.

I Am Not An Expert. But, I Would Like To Think, That The Real Ark, The Clay Tablets, Inside, Would Have Reverted Back To Sand. Like, Portrayed, In This Movie. ( Because The Tablets, Are Over 2,000 Years Old! )

Karen Allen was great in this movie. Should have been in all of them. And should have been a bigger star than she was.

Hello new subber here and love your reactions to death. Keep up the awesome and amazing work. But if i may fill you in on something if you don't already know but when Indy was looking for mary in the basket you know that swordsman that was about a few meters from him, there was supposed to be a really cool fight scene but that day was one of the worst sick days Harrison Ford has ever had even to today and he just pulled out his pistol and shot him. That was not scripted, Harrison said in an interview I watched one time, he said i felt like i was on my death bed while trying to work and he says every time someone brings up that scene to him he says even til today that he doesn't remember doing that and LUCAS and SPIELBERG decided to keep it in cause they still laugh to this day about that scene.

If you stop watching when you see it going into the warehouse, there's more. end of the ending I thought made a great statement.-Ernie Moore Jr. If you need a kung-fu Movie I'd say, "(the) Secret of Shaolin Poles." And given someone mentioned poles in the comments...-Ernie Moore Jr.
