Poor Clemenza, he was almost blamed twice for being a rat or traitor, the first when Vito was shot and when Barzini tried to kill Mike during the "deal" after Vito's funeral. But he's stayed loyal all those times.
@lufsolitaire53513 жыл бұрын
There were always little subtle cues and nuances that at least in part I, Clemenza would stay undyingly loyal to Vito, and unlike Tessio I think he had a closer relationship with Michael and while he had his reservations he ultimately put his trust in him. Like when Vito made it very clear Michael was now the head and that he’d step down to being underboss, both had their reservations but Clemenza publicly affirmed it while Tessio gave a weak nod even before the funeral. While Tessio was the more competent and intelligent, I think Clemenza had a closer personal relationship with Vito and family, given how much more familial/hospitable he was with Sonny/Michael and the “storyteller” aspect of personhood.
@adrianharrell872 жыл бұрын
Michael would never believed Clemenza was a traitor neither time. He knew that Clemenza and his father was old friends and he introduced his father to a life of crime when they was young. And during Vito's funeral, he wasn't surprised when he sees that Tessio was the traitor with the Barzini meeting because he knows that it a smart move and he knows that Tessio was alway smart. But this scene remind of the game where after Michael became don, he knew there was a traitor in the family and he figured it was between Aldo (the protagonist) or Monk but deep down he knew that it couldn't be Aldo because he did so much for the family.

@EricMustardman3 жыл бұрын
@@NiVi192 In some way, there was already a lot of blood on his hands. He'd been in the Marine Corps and received a couple of medals, which he certainly didn't get for behaving like a reserved college student and talking calmly and reasonably. He got them for killing enemies, and most likely in combat situations in which he could see the lives of those he had hit expiring. So, despite his junior years, he already was a battle-hardened veteran who wouldn't faint at the sight of blood, gore, guts and brain. In the book, Puzo describes that scene in which Michael decided to personally take action against Sollozzo and McClusky and was ridiculed by Sonny as a college boy with an Ivy League suit who wants to play gangster. Michael's reaction was a verbal rebuke of his older brother that was fierce in a very cold manner and deadly menacing at the same time. Everybody present at that meeting felt that if Michael had had a gun in his hand, Sonny might have actually been in danger. Sonny immediately gave in and stopped playing the paternalistic older brother, probably because he had felt that Michael was much more mature than he and that Michael had indeed the better, more rational arguments.

This must have been a tough scene to cut... - It sets up the reasoning for Paulie's assassination beautifully - It clearly affirms Michael's belief in Clemenza (and Sonny's) - It completely cements the coming powershift from Sonny to Michael - all the while, Tessio flies under the radar, undetected... fredo wasn't the only weak one in the family. tom just hid his weakness more effectively. This scene also demonstrates that sonny understood the nature of the beast better than michael. Nah, Sonny was too much of a hothead to ever be a good don. His own father knew it, and said so after Sonny got offed. What got Vito Corleone to the top was his ability to control himself completely, and not reveal himself to his enemies. Sonny would never have been able to keep himself under control. This was a cool scene, but unnecessary. Already showed why Michael had the making of a better Don. He was cooler and more strategic. Sonny, was like the Sun - fiery and warm, but he didn’t have his Dad’s strategic mind or composure. The culture of the Corleons, in terms of it’s warmth and sense of family ended after Sonny got killed. Cool scene though...

Exactly, this scene was a little too dead on obvious with what it was intended to show and it was redundant. Good edit, IMO.
@Rep00073 жыл бұрын
Disagree, this scene definitely clarifies the story for the audience (not all of whom have read the book) and does a lot of character-definition for several characters which would have been helpful. Would have been better left in, but they have to cut somewhere, to get the run time down and it was already too long. Without this scene the beginning of the war is very abbreviated, choppy, and hard to follow unless you read the book.

I think the "family" culture of the Corleone's ended because while Michael was away at college and at war, Sonny stayed home and was more fully imbued with that culture of "famiglia".

Actually I don't think just being passive was a viable option. If they hadn't hit back I think it would have been perceived as blood in the water from a family that was helpless and vulnerable in the absence of the old Don. Just ready to fall. Even their loyalists might soon have deserted them.

@@larrybreitfelder-navas6901 Right on point...and Michael knew this, Sonny knew this. Sonny's a hothead and quick to violence, but something that doesn't come across as well in the movie as it did in the book is that his actions kept the Corleone family alive and independent during their most difficult time. If they had bowed to Sollozzo's strongarming they never would have been taken seriously again. If they had remained independent but kept the peace, the other families would have smelled blood in the water and stripped the meat from their bones. Hitting everyone else first knocked their enemies and rivals back on their heels and gave the Corleones a chance to recover. It also put a huge target on Sonny. EVERYONE wanted him dead.

@square-dealsam91023 жыл бұрын
Got a question. The first five seconds - Michael walks in and Clemenza has to stretch out to take Michael's hand and pull him close. It almost appears as if Michael is hesitating because he's uncertain if Clemenza can be trusted and then offers a weak one-hand shake as Clemenza offers two. Reading too much into it?
@paleobuzz3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you are reading into it too much. The fact that Clemenza is not in the room with Sonny and Tesio right after Vito is shot speaks volumes. This move by Coppola sets the scene for casting a suspicion light on Clemenza, along with the awkward hand shake with Michael. Clemenza and Tesio were always the Dom’s core crew as far back as the Genco Olive Oil Co and before. I find it odd that he was outside the room comforting Tom’s wife instead of discussing and plotting recourse for the Dom nearly getting whacked, which is the ultimate violation of any ‘family’. But Pauley actually worked for Clemenza, so Clemenza was responsible for him. That’s why he was present when he had Pauley whacked...the betrayal was very personal to him.

@lynniepage49947 жыл бұрын
We tend to forget that they are both narcissistic sociopaths and Michael was actually more chilling and effective because of his ability to completely compartmentalize his life. Sonny did have more emotion....that's what got him killed. Kaye's face (at the end of the movie) says it all....she finally realizes that she's married to an emotionless monster. And, no, I don't think that Sonny would have had his own brother, Fredo, killed. Also, I believe Michael was Vito's favorite son and that he secretly realized that Michael was more like him than Sonny. He knew that if Michael ever crossed the line he would become as, if not more, ruthless than himself and he did not want his favorite son to become souless. What Vito really hoped was that his "adopted" son , Tom, would, in effect, become the godfather with Sonny only as a figurehead. He wanted Tom's cool head to eventually lead the family to legitimacy and away from crime.
