This is a deleted scene from The Godfather sourced from The Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980. This scene takes place between Sollozzo's call to Sonny and Sollozzo's conversation with Tom. In this scene, Sonny goes home to his mother to tell her about Vito's situation and calls Tessio to get fifty men over to the house. He tries to call Luca Brasi, but he is already dead at the hands of the Tattaglias.

Love how Sonny knew Tessio's (a caporegime) phone number by heart... but then has to go to his father's safe to look up Luca Brasi's number. It's like opening a safe that contains the nuclear launch codes.

In the novel, the only man that Don Vito feared was Luca Brasi. Still, Brasi was fanatically loyal to the Godfather. I *highly* recommend the novel to any movie fans. The cliche of book and movie is extremely true for The Godfather, as hard as it may be to believe. Lots of extra story, too. It shows Vito's uncanny genius much better. He's damn near telepathic reading people and situations.

I wish Sonny's softer side had a little more screen time, especially if they explored his relationship with Tom more. Sonny wasn’t always a total bonehead although he wasn’t as good as Michael who was pre destined. Sonny was hot headed but he could be competent when he was wasn’t. As I said on another thread. @facumayan8792 2 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree. Coppola chopped most of Caan's good scenes as Sonny, and even so, Sonny's character is still iconic in the movie. Really gutted that Sonny's screentime was minimal, since the novel describes how he was on top on the Five Families war, how of a brilliant "war general" and strong was during the conflict, and his rise through the family ranks as Capo during a past assesination attempt on Vito and how he was feared on the streets (not Luca Brasi level, but still). In the movie he mostly comes as a hot headed and not so brilliant guy (for example how he revelated his thoughs on the Sollozzo meeting and how he rushed from the compound alone, without bodyguards, in the middle of a mafia war)... so much wasted potential.

Just for the record. And In case people haven’t read the book. Sonny was smart very very smart and as smart as Michael and the godfather. The book talks of him as a tactical genius akin to Napoleon. The movie has a deleted scene where he tests Michael by asking him who betrayed the Don. Pauline or Clemenza. Sonny knew it was Paulie. He also fought the 5 families to a stalemate. Sonny only had one fatal flaw. He couldn’t manage his emotions. His mouth revealed his thoughts and his temper led to his death. Michael and the don could get angry but they could manage it. Ultimately Sonny was the ideal underboss. Respected and feared but needed someone to hold his leash.

This scene proved Sonny is a thinker and strategist as well and this is done by him not wanting to use Clemenza's men at that moment. It also shows Vito had schooled him well since Sonny went into action, first by securing the compound two getting a hold of Luca which meant Sonny was preparing for war. (He was now the head of the family until he got word that his dad was still alive. In other words, Sonny stepped up. His only fault was, he was too impulsive although the Corleone family was never in danger of losing the war when Sonny was in control)... ;)

James Caan is the ace in the hole of The Godfather. He owns the middle third of the film (from the Don being shot to his own end). Even in Part II when he pops up for his one scene near the end the movie gets a kick start of energy that it lacks most of the time (Andrew Dice Clay based his entire career on copying Caan in that scene).

So well said. Maybe this is exactly why they left out that part. Maybe Coppola did not want to represent Sonny more than a hothead. He wanted people to percieve Michael as 'the golden boy' or 'the best of the Corleone brothers' by making the other two look like dumper than they actually are. As a matter of fact, I can't even recall a scene where we see Sonny alone. He is always surrounded by his sidekicks and we hardly ever hear any good dialogue from him. Even Clemenza has a famous motto: leave the gun, take the cannoli. Sonny has none. Every Italian can relate to Sonny grabbing that loaf of bread when his mother left the kitchen, and tearing off a piece and dipping it in the warm tomato sauce on the stovetop. Those details are only possible when a film is directed by a person wholly familiar with the subject matter. Francis Ford Coppola grew up in an Italian-American home where this practice was a cultural norm.

@@Rockhound6165....how do you know it wasn't tomato sauce? If she was just frying peppers, it would have been in olive oil and I highly doubt Sonny would satisfy his tastes for food by dipping bread in olive oil alone.... Although it's not farfetched, it's unlikely...I say it was tomato sauce because he took it with him to the don's office as he was making his calls. Tomato sauce on bread is less messier to spill than olive oil is to drip all over...and heaven forbid if anyone soiled the don's office with dripping foodstuffs.

There’s so much in this scene, why chop it?! The house being so dark and depressing, unlike every other scene where it’s bright a full of action. I also love how Sonny grabs the loaf of bread and rips a big piece off, like he’s so pissed he wishes it was Sollozzo’s face!! The mom’s reaction is incredible too, it’s like she knows this is a possibility, she prays it never happens, but is always ready for it, and that’s why she’s so calm and not a total basket case when Sonny tells her Vito is hurt. Sonny looking at then not sitting in his fathers chair out of respect. Brilliant scene, the editor should get whacked for chopping it out!

That's blasphemy. Part of the art of Godfather II is how the story shifts back and forth between Vito in 1910 and Michael in 1950 and the edits between the two. It's like saying you'd rather see Pulp Fiction in chronological order instead of the way Tarantino sequenced it. It's destroying a significant part of the story telling.

Tom Hagan uses it at Vito's funeral when he says to Michael "do you how THEY'LL come after you?" Connie says it to Michael in GF3 when she says "now THEY'LL fear you", and Michael also says it in GF3 when he says "Just when I thought I was out, THEY pull me back in!"
