This is a deleted scene from The Godfather Part II sourced from The Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980. It takes place between the scene of Pentangeli complaining to Fredo about waiting for a meeting and another deleted scene about finding Fabrizio in America, which is followed by Pentangeli and the orchestra (love that scene.) This scene shows Sonny Corleone's daughter, Francesca, and her fiance Gardner Shaw being introduced to Michael by Sonny's widow Sandra. This scene, minus the Santino Jr. bit, was included on the 1992 VHS release "The Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980." I'm sorry for the sudden drop in quality, but that clip with Michael asking Santino Jr. about football only aired as part of The Godfather: The Complete Novel for Television in 1977 on NBC. It was not even included in the 2012 rebroadcast on AMC in HD, known as "The Godfather: A Novel for Television." Thankfully, someone recorded it on Betamax, and people got in touch with people, yada yada yada, it's in a torrent file of someone's fanedit now. I'm actually seeding it at focushdtv.info/files/details/2...
Please enjoy, that Santino Jr. clip is exceedingly rare! The CC may be wrong during this bit, as I can't tell if Michael is saying "How's the football?" or "How's the book going?". Obviously there is no way to officially tell, since CC barely existed in 1977, which was the only time the footage was seen, and the recording certainly did not have them. Also, this scene is cut by a few seconds at the very end when Kay is hugging Francesca. You can see these few seconds in my video of The Godfather Saga Part III Closing Montage and Credits, because that's where that episode ends.

While I agree with the meaning behind what he says, it came off as very preachy. I am so used to Michael Corleone being very subtle, that this came off as too direct or plain-spoken. While we could have moments like this behind the scenes, it does not match what we see of him dealing with in "the family business". I guess based on your outlook it could be either jarring, which is my view, or something that gives more depth to Michael. Edit: I am basing this off of the movies which I have seen and not the books.

This scene was cut because according to Coppola, he wanted to contrast Michael's persona in dealing with people on a special day (his son's communion) with Don Vito Corleone's persona in the Godfather (Vito's daughters wedding). If you recall, Enzo the baker's son, Bonasera, Johnny Fontane all come to Vito with respect and are begging him for help, which he provides them. Michael, on the other hand, has contentious meetings with Connie, Frankie and the senator. He wanted to show that Michael lacked the warmth that his father had. This scene would not have advanced that narrative, so he decided to cut it.

I don’t really think the scene that WAS left in helps advance that idea either-Connie was a $ hungry whore, the senator the same thing, only w a healthy dose of hatred for Italians thrown in, and Frankie was drunk and being disrespectful to the head of the family. None of those meetings were Michael’s fault

@@JoeSmith-dl9okVito was scary enough that his psycho hitman was nervous to talk to him and Vito wouldn't have agreed to see people on business dealings on an important day like that. Vito also gets irritated in the parallel scene because the undertaker offers him money instead of friendship and favors. This scene still works imo because his Michael brings money into the conversation unprompted first with the line about how the fiancé will provide for the girl, twice when the fiancé is bashful about discussing money, then when Mike says the dowry needs to be big to let the guy's family know that he has money.

That's an excellent observation and I whole-heartedly agree. That single moment alone might have qualified this scene to stay in the final cut. I understand why they cut it, because it wasn't important to the main story. However, it does show some juxtaposition with Merle. Gardner is respectful, financially secure, and it is implied he will be a good husband. Merle acts openly disrespectful, he's broke, and it's obvious he just wants to leech off Connie.

Hey uh, can I get a drink or somethin’? That Merle was a class act all the way. Loved how Mike told Connie “I want you to tell him that marriage is out of the question, and that you don’t want to see him anymore. He’ll understand, believe me.” And Merle just sits there. I also thought this scene parallels Mike asking Sr. Vitelli if he can meet Appolonia under his family’s supervision. Respect goes a long way with Mike.

I love how Michael looked after "Sonny's children" it's so important that he provide financial support to all his family members. This is the "major point" why he was in the family business. I wish these scenes were included in the final cut of the movie...it wud have given more color to Michael's motivations behind why he did what he did...especially in Godfather 2, because Michael's relationships with his family was not explored as in depth as it was in part 1, it often felt like he didn't care about them but we know that was not true at all
@czwarty7878

@@tintocherian7715 exactly. This scene really adds to movie, showing both his warm family man side and role as strong head of family. He's obviously happy to see Francesca is doing well, but at the same time he's probing her man strongly - he remains cool-headed. He also reminds his people about dowry, not trusting her fiancee entirely, always being a step ahead to remind everyone who he and his family is. The ending of scene, where it's shown how excited Francesca is to tell everyone that Michael gave them blessing also further strengthens it - his opinion is final and very important for entire family, in both business and personal matters. And she was visibly very anxious about all this in the beggining. And of course the Fredo scene. It's really a powerful moment - he is shown being excluded from family matters... which also plays important part and adds to the plot. There's just so much happening in this scene, I just love it.

Michael, although obviously brilliant, never exuded the personal warmth his father always displayed in dealing with other people. Michael could be stolid, even almost too cool, in his interactions with both friends and business associates. That may be why he’s seen sitting by himself at the end of both Godfather II and the rather disappointing Godfather III.

The way Michael carried himself in this scene, knowing exactly when to be monotonous and when to raise his pitch, he's intimidating him and HE KNOWS IT, that's why he breaks into a fake laugh every other sentence, not to ease the situation, because he just knows it's making Shaw more pressured. Oh, let me tell you, the video of Gary Della’Barte and Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling trying vainly to calm Pat down and assure him that Howard really loved him is timeless! @@RajaPamungkas87 main idea behind the line is that flaunting your money or wealth is often considered bragging and thus undesirable. So what Michael is saying here is that this idea of people talking about their wealth openly being inappropriate, is just a trick to make the poor believe wealth is a kind of dirty thing, making them less eager to chase after big wealth themselves. So this contempt of money (aka openly stating your financial status) is just a trick to keep the poor without it (it regering to money / wealth)

Just be chill and proud with your richness. No need for arrogance, or in this case, misplaced modesty that gave the wrong impression to a guy that holds decisiveness and respect in high regard (Being meek would show that he may not be tough enough to protect his wife's honour). Had the guy told Michael he was a stockholder but in a more reasoned, confident tone, then that line would've been meaningless, and Michael would've liked him a lot more. Wish this would have stayed. It was always cool seeing examples of Sonny's fierce love for his brothers and how that was reciprocated, despite their differences. Michaels love for Sonny carrying over to his children really shows here and it would have been one of the very, very few times where he doesn't come across as incredibly cold. I don't think the intent of his portrayal in this chapter would have been damaged by this scene for that reason, as it can still be construed as in character despite how far he's otherwise fallen into darkness.

Remember - she doesn't see the family the way Italians do - they are united as a front and being the Godfather puts a lot of pressure on Michael to do for the entire family network. She is thinking like an American - father and mother or sisters - are an afterthought- sorry but it is true. I've lived with an American - when his mother sent him a $5.00 which she didn't have much to give - I asked him to write a letter to her now instead he said he'll write after Christmas? Guess what - his brother called after the first week in January to tell him his mother passed away. He never listened to what I said to give her a simple note and pictures to thank her for her kindness. This may not be all AMERICANS but there are MANY that think like that!

Actually, in some theatrical releases this scene was left in. I recall seeing this and remembering how Michael asked the young man how he intended to support his wife as a fine arts major. His answer and Michael's reaction showed that Michael did have a softer, more reasonable side to him. Frankly, the way movies get chopped up with scene deletions it's all to make the studios happy so that they can have more showings of the film per day. It's just like how the old AM radio used to play the shorter versions of songs. Think of The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" the way the AM stations first played it and then how the FM stations played the longer version.
