I didn't care for the love story between the cousins and was missing that old ruthless cold-hearted Don Corleone that Micheal was in the first two Godfather movies. I think Formal is right the audience low key never wanted Micheal to change. I know I didn't lol. But as I got older and as I re-watched The Godfather Part 3, I grew to have a newfound respect and understanding for this movie. Micheal had a different motivation in The Godfather Part 3. Micheal didn't care for power anymore, instead his new motivation was redemption. But in the mafia world, redemption is very hard to achieve.

Fun fact: There was originally gonna be a Godfather 4. It was gonna be in the style of GF2 where it would tell 2 stories: one being about Vincent running the family and another about Vito running the family in the 1930s where we'd see Sonny come up in the family, the legend of Luca Brasi, really seeing the family step into the peak they had in the first Godfather. Ultimately, the central story was gonna take place in the 80s (and maybe up to the 90s) with Vincent getting into the drug biz, grieving over Mary, making mistakes and getting killed in a shootout with the feds towards the end resulting in the family collapsing for good.

The books flesh out the characters a bit more. Sonny has a kind heart like vito, and is great at violent street level organization (hits, ambushes, he has a nack for that type of action) but is a hothead. Fredo has charm and likability like vito, but is weak and not cunning. Mike has the mythotical, strategy and cold cunning like vito, but lacks the humanity and heart. Vito seemed to have the strengths of his sons but not their weakness..because he comes from such dire circumstances that he couldn't afford weaknesses

'The Godfather Part III' may not be at the same level as the first two, but it's still a very good film (albeit hard to follow in places). Once it stops beating you over the head with the references and callbacks, it stands up on its own. This new version feels unnecessary tbh as it just moves a couple of scenes around and trims Sofia Coppola's scenes a tad.

This is not the version shown in the theaters. Do you remember Lucy Mancini from the first movie? Don Tomasso from the first two movies? They're in this one, too. Yes, you noticed the blasphemy in the very first few minutes of the film. This version fades out with Michael sitting in a chair. The version that was shown in the theater ends with Michael dropping dead out of the chair all alone just after he puts on his glasses. I always thought about the contrast between Vito and Michael. Vito started with nothing and ended up with a large family and many trusted associates. Michael started with everything and died with nothing, all alone. The original last scene, with him lying dead in the dust, was more profound. In a very real way Michael died when Mary got killed. Afterward he is the proverbial dead man walking.

Another great reaction, guys! The "Death" referred to in the title is metaphorical. It's the spiritual death of Michael Corleone; the death of his soul. In the theatrical cut, they showed his physical death, falling over out of his chair. But that isn't the story Coppola wanted to tell. So this is the director's cut that he originally wanted released, but Paramount wouldn't approve at the time. Underrated, unfairly maligned film. Yo I never realised Tuco from The Good The Bad and The Ugly was in this. Have these guys reacted to that yet? If not someone gotta recommend it to them. The runtime is gonna piss them off lol. But yeah the Coda version improved this a lot. It's still a let down though. Pacino's performance as a more mellowed out older Michael is interesting, but lacks continuity with the Michael from the previous two films. They feel almost like different characters. And yeah Sofia Coppola's performance is not good. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if so much of the films emotional impact wasn't hinged around her. The film would have been so much more impactful if the audience could actually relate to Vincent's attraction to her, instead of just being grossed out and shaking their head at the fact they were cousins. Sofia Coppola got a ton of criticism for this role when the film released, with almost every movie critic ripping her to shreds and many blaming her performance for the lackluster quality of the film. Must have been pretty tough for an 18 year old to go through. It is interesting hearing Francis Coppola talk about how reality mirrored the film in this way. He always saw the production of the Godfather films as a family affair, and by casting his daughter he was putting even more emphasis on his own family just like Michael was trying to in the film. But when Sofia took so much criticism for the quality of the film, Francis felt that she had taken a bullet meant for him, just like what happened to Mary in the film. I imagine it was an emotionally difficult time for the whole family.

Part 3 was about how the Coppolas became the family that Vito always wanted the Corleones to be. You can't have that message if Winona Ryder is trying to play Sofia Coppola. @@user-ww8fb6oy8p Francis Ford Coppola and Sofia Coppola are on record saying that Mary Corleone was based upon the conversations that they had as she was growing up, watching her Dad become famous. That's why Coppolas Dad, Carmine, is conducting the band. Coppola's Uncle, Anton, is conducting the opera that Coppola grew up on that is all about chivalry, which Michael Corleone lacks. The relationship between the cousins is based upon Coppolas Grandparents being cousins. Coppolas Grandfather married his Grandmother because her face was deformed and he knew that nobody would marry her. Coppolas Grandfather didn't want her to grow old alone, so he offered to marry here out of compassion, not lust, knowing the risk that their children might have birth defects. Their children were not only healthy, they were born hyper talented as we see today. Coppola never wanted to make any Godfather movies because of the racist stereotypes about Italian Americans in the mafia. Coppola only did those movies for the money. As a result, the Coppolas became very rich without ever actually joining the mafia. It's called allegory. Only the most elite artists know how to use allegory.

lot of people didn't like it because Michael wasn't Micheal in part 3 spending the whole movie trying to stay out of the gangster life stupid director

Time jump? LOL! You are aware this was made 16 YEARS after Godfather 2, right?

Sophia is not a good actress. But the film wasn’t bad. However, parts I & II are superior.

Weakest of the 3, but still good to me. Especially the ending. Michael being destroyed by Mary's death, basically his sins coming back, chef's kiss. Sofia Coppola's acting was TRRRRRASH, though.

Mary Corleone was based upon Sofia Coppola. You're saying that Sofia Coppola doesn't know how to play Sofia Coppola.

@@erwinquiachon8054 I think Winona Ryder was the first choice but her schedule was full. Sofia Coppola hasn’t done much acting since that movie. I wonder why? She can’t act. Her face is expressionless.

@@pampennyworth Paramount wanted Winona Ryder, Coppola didn't. Coppola offered to cast Ryder in a later film (Dracul) if she dropped out of Part 3 so he could cast Sofia. Sofia never had ambitions to be an actor. She only took that role because her Dad insisted that Sofia was the only correct artistic choice. The whole point of Sofia Coppola playing Mary Corleone was to compare the Corleones to the Coppolas. Mary dies by the sins of the Corleones, but Sofia continues to thrive in real life by the virtues of the Coppolas. Part 3 was about how the Coppolas became the family that Vito always wanted the Corleones to be. You can't have that message if Winona Ryder is trying to play Sofia Coppola. Sofia Coppola was perfect for this. There was nothing wrong with Sofia Coppolas acting because she wasn't acting. She was being Sofia Coppola, as instructed by her father. Ask Google, "Is Mary Corleone based upon Sofia Coppola?" and you will get a big "YES".

I can't stand this version of GODFATHER 3 ... especially the Title where it has a huge SPOILER in it not to mention the final scene is very different from the Theatrical version. I ALWAYS suggest against Reactors watching this version. #IETVandMovieTalk #WeJustTalkingTVandMOVIES #TellemTANKseddit #TANKTheSweetScienceExaminer

I have never seen this whole movie. It’s boring to me. Violence, but overkill.
