I believe the Ophanim's appearance to Ezekiel (being wheel-like, and being four of them) was supposed to look like a massive chariot. "Their movement never varies as they go", so I imagine they moved in a similar way and to the same direction (just like pairs of wheels). Even because Ophanim's name is often referred to/translated as "Thrones", which supports the idea of a Chariot (that carries the throne of God).
