The Gokyo Trek and how we experienced it in fall 2021: all the details about stages, lodges, trails and more!
The Gokyo Trek:
Part 2/2 - Glorious Gokyo
From Pangboche to Gokyo
Deutsche Version: • Der Gokyo Trek -Teil 2...
This video is about trekking the Gokyo Trek in Nepal and is meant to be a trek report and guide for anyone interested in hiking this beautiful trail in the Khumbu, Nepal's Everest Region. It's the second part of a two part series about our hike below the worlds highest mountains.
Please find the first part here:
• The Gokyo Trek - Part ...
We set off from Pangboche, hiking towards Phortse on conjunction of the Dudh Kosi and the Imja Khola rivers. From there we descend down to a small bridge, cross the Dudh Kosi and finally enter Gokyo valley on its western side. There we ascend towards Dhole - a small cluster of lodges sitting above 4000 meters.
On day 7 of our trek we finally reach Gokyo village. From Dhole we climb further up the valley, passing Luza and Machermo and having our lunch break in Pengka. In the afternoon, we finish our last hard climb and then stroll along Gokyos beautiful lakes to reach our destination.
From Gokyo we conduct two day hikes. The first up to Gokyo Ri - a very famous viewpoint - and the second up to Ngozumpa Tse - a less famous and a bit harder to reach viewpoint. From both we get amazing vistas on Cho Oyu, Mount Everest, the western Cwm, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, Thamserku, the Ngozumpa glacier, Gokyo village, the Gokyo lakes and Renjo La pass.
Renjo La then is the goal of day 10 on our trek. We set off early in Gokyo to cross the pass and descend down into Thame valley, having lunch break in Lungden and making our way to Thame before nightfall after a 11 hour hike.
Day 9 is a lot less strenuous. We visit Thames beautiful gompa and there get great view onto the village and the whole valley. After, we hike back to Namche Bazaar.
The last day of trekking takes us finally back to Lukla and its airport. We walk down the same path we came up 10 days before, passing through Monjo and Phakding. After showing you our trek, I summarize our experience, giving you (hopefully) all the information you need to decide if you like to hike this trek or not.

This is one of the best KZbin videos about trekking to Gokyo Lake and overall trekking to Nepal. 1. Very Informative, 2. Superb View and Shots and video composition. 3. Excellent quality of the video resolution and vibration stability, pleasing to the eyes. I was impressed and inspired. Good luck with more videos about trekking in Nepal. I would recommend Makalu Trek and Shey-Phoksundo lake trek next time if you haven't already done it. keep it up man.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful video of your Trek to Gokyo. We trekked to Gokyo in 2014 but in February and all the lakes were frozen and the landscape was covered in snow. It was great to see what it looks like in another season. Hope to go back this fall if we can.

Thanks Jenn! 😊 This was in November last year. Best time of the year for clear views, but can get a bit cold above 4000 meters. October and then again April and May might be slightly warmer, but also have more chance of clouds and a few showers.

5th lake and the viewpoint are 2 to 2.5 hours up and like 1.5h down. It looks very easy on the map but alongside the 4th lake is a lot of Nepali -Flat.

Habe Deine Tour schon 3 Mal angeschaut. Super gut gemacht.

I would have liked to see the memorial of 25 avalanche victims in Pengka/Pangka. A huge snow dump and subsequent avalanche buried a yak shelter there in 1995 with 12 Japanese trekkers and their crew claming 25 lives. At 9:55 you claim that Gokyo Lakes are "the highest freshwater lake system on the World". Based on what? The highest of the six lakes is at 5153m and the first one at 4686m. The Panch Pokhari (5 lakes) south of Amphu Labtsa, just as an example, are between 5379 and 5492 meters (Google Earth figures). I am sure there are others also. Naturally also Tilicho Tal is advertised as the highest lake in the world even though it is less than 5 km, and Everest View Hotel as the "highest in the world" when there are several higher towns and airports in Tibet and South America and surely hotels also. Quite typical Nepalese marketing BS not in touch with reality.

Hi Marc! First of all thank you for watching and also thanks a lot for the feedback! Great questions there. I didn't know about the avalanche in 1995 and the memorial didn't catch my attention. Do you know where it is? If it's near the trail I must have missed it. Will certainly check it out when I go back. Regarding the ridiculous claims of highest xyz: Yes, I'm aware of that. And it's annoying. I found the claim regarding the highest lake system in this paper published by International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (page 88): web.archive.org/web/20110726170342/books.icimod.org/demo/uploads/ftp/Nepal%20Biodiversity%20Resource%20Book.pdf I'm aware that here are higher lakes, but not being a geographer or hydrologist I just accepted the fact, that I don't know what exactly qualifies as a "fresh water lake system". If you know, please comment again! I'm genuinely interested in that subject! Also I wonder if Tilicho Lake is at least the highest lake of it's size, or if there is a larger one higher up somewhere. Regarding the Everest Hotel I understand they claim to have been the highest hotel when it opened. Don't know if that is true, though. Again thanks for the great question!

@@TheMenWhoStareAtMountains I think it is near the yak shelter about 40 m North-West of "Cozy Inn" marked on the Google Earth. What bothers me in the bronze plaque giving the names of the victims, then saying something like "They died for their love of the mountains", when 13 Sherpas died because they needed money, not love of the mountains. I went up to Gokyo via Pangka and saw the plaque in 1998. What comes to the "highest lake system" it is true that Gokyo lakes are connected by a stream, and many high lakes like those near Amphu Labtsa are not, they drain only through the glacial moraines on which they sit. Just like the Tilicho Tal drains through some 2 km of old terminal moraines of the Tilicho Glacier being a source of two streams down valley. Is having a surface drainage needed to constitute a "lake system" is the crucial question here, and is the Gokyo chain of lakes really the highest in the world? Considering the Andes also. The link you gave points to a web archive where I do not find the relevant book or article. Have to do some googling I guess. There was a very interesting article about the "Japanese Hotel" in some Kathmandu newspaper couple of years ago, interesting and sad story why it folded almost instantly, being about 40 years ahead of the times. Maybe it was the highest, but then again Thorong La is the "biggest" and "highest" mountain pass in the world also...

Beautiful videos --- but please spell the letter "A" in the traditional manner in your descriptions --- though not as graphically "cute" as your version --- the traditional spelling is much easier on the viewer's mind and eyes --- AND GET THAT DRONE! --- check out Kraig Adams' drone mastery in his Annapurna and EBC videos for inspiration.

Thanks Earthpeople! Unfortunately drones are prohibited in Nepals national parks and conservation areas unless you apply for an expensive permission by their aviation authorities. I don't know if other youtubers actually do that or just smuggle their drones in and break local laws, but both these options are not for me. But you are right. Good drone shots look amazing!

How about collaborating with the Nepal 360 young couple --- to use their awesome drone shots --- to embellish your already fine work? This friendly cross-pollination would be great advertising for BOTH of you. Just credit them for their fine drone photography. They are young NATIVE NEPALIS --- who speak Nepali --- so, it may be easier for them to fly drones. You both often go to the same places --- such as the Manang area and Gokyo Lakes. @@TheMenWhoStareAtMountains
