This makes me think EVERYBODY in New Zealand is a superb actor! - having been brought up on a legendary classic that will never be repeated ... These must have been 4 years old when Lord of the Rings redefined cinema - written, directed, and filmed in New Zealand - the "impossible movie", that became not only possible, but absolutely brilliant ... it rightly became a symbol of national identity for all time! ... because nobody expected something like this to come out of a country that was often left off of world maps (usually because there was no room left after drawing Australia :)) I see this video as a superb legacy of Peter Jackson's classic. The opening scene gave me goosebumps :)

I think the black shirt is also in its own sense evil... twisting people like the white shirt, just not as bad. Because back when Rowan wore a red shirt, he was nicer. And Alan was the only one who was able to handle the white shirt for a small amount of time, because he wore the black shirt first and was already keeping it from changing him. He did eventually succumb to the white shirt, but he lasted longer than anyone else who wore it.

Perhaps it's less that he was unchanged by the black shirt, but rather that we never saw who he had been before it. Consider: Alan is the one who keeps attacking customers, robbers and the like. When things go really wrong, he's the one who snaps. The black shirt changes people in a slower fashion, a subtler way, but also one that lasts longer. It is no better, it just takes longer for people to succumb to it's effects. Which may also explain the occasional glimpses of a nicer Rowan.
