As a wargamer who started in the '70s I'm disappointed that you didn't follow up your wargaming mentions with the current state of groggy goodness. There has never been a better time for wargaming. From the diverse themes, superb production values, playability factor (no more obtuse mechanics), the abundance of solo games (without simply playing both sides), and of course the ability to find out rule answers without sending in a SASE with a question phrased in a yes/no way, it's all top notch today. I only wish we could take the current state of wargames and transport them back to the '70s and '80s when wargaming groups were easy to find! 🎲🎲🎲

I never was that much into board games (perhaps I just played the wrong ones in my childhood, growing up in the GDR), but your passion is really infectious. Will try out some new ones soon. Greetings from Germany! :-)
@SandyofCthulhu3 жыл бұрын
My mind boggles wondering what kind of board games were available in the GDR. I assume everything has to pass a censor. At least you didn't have to play Monopoly.
@moserfugger63633 жыл бұрын
@@SandyofCthulhu Thanks for answering. It's a real honor. 😇 Yeah, the selection of board games was very limited in the GDR. Mostly variations of classic games like "Ludo" (german: Mensch ärgere dich nicht) or "Nine men's morris" (german: Mühle). So probably exactly the kind of games you were bored of in your childhood. Even in later decades there were very few games aimed at grown-ups (aside from some pretty bland card games). The most popular GDR games were all aimed at children. Here's a typical example: shop.romeoarts.com/product/sandmann-spiel/ Adults playing games at home probably didn't fit with the concept of the ideal GDR citizen. The regime wanted you to participate in more public activities. Everything that happened in private behind closed doors was suspicious. 😉 So yeah, with all the possibilities we have nowadays, this really is the golden age of board games. Even for newbies. Thanks again, I really enjoy your channel and wish you all the best for your projects! Martin

From my observation, modern board games can be divided in three categories: The Casual games: Usually card games; simple, can be explained in less than a minute, a game lasts at averahe under 20 minutes. The collectables: Magic the gathering, Warhammer 40K and Pokemon are prime examples. The focus lays on indivitualising, with regular new pieces to add to your collection. The complexity varies, but all of them have objectivly better pieces to get a clear advantage. The geek games: Often kickstarted, complex rules and lots of preparation in terms of utensiles. The length of one game in some of them are literally undefined: One night, one year, no limit. Showing examples are as variet as futile to give. But if I had to give one: Dungeons and Dragons.

My first encounter with someone I would consider to be famous. Thank you for all of the incredible products you create and I am excited to see Dinosaur 1944 as I think it looks fantastic. My love for horror and suspense stories and games started with Call of Cthulhu and my first encounter with something in the attic that terrified and drove my poor detective insane. @kgoblin50843 жыл бұрын
As a former magic head, I can see why. A) The game always had a creepy, bleed the stone aspect to it with how it roped folks into buying pack after pack of cards. That kind of commercialization is going to turn some people off, some of whom then start to think they are better than the chumps in the skinner box... hence elitism B) Any game where you have dedicated (and straight up professional!) players who ONLY play that one game is going to garner some hate like that. Part of it is annoyance having to listen to a fiddle with 1 note, & part of it is there will always be some one-noters who are full on jackasses. In the video game space, same thing applies to the communities around stuff like Counterstrike, League of Legends, DOTA, Fortnite, & Minecraft. What's notable about the MTG community is you now have the same factors creating conflict between fans of different formats.
