I was totally shocked to learn that this movie has a very poor reputation and was almost universally panned by film critics both in 1986 and now. Rewatched it for the first time in years to examine the grievances and I just *cannot* understand why loads of people seem to hate this film. It is rather a flawed piece but the tone is just so bizarre and unique. This movie could have turned out in so many possible ways (some better and some really bland) and I'm glad it turned out so weird and strange.
@Havik_19966 жыл бұрын
RazzleDazzle people hate this film because of the hidden messages that's behind it. There are a lot of messages in this film of what's been going on since Jesus.

Kids loved it. But the adults found it weird and like it didn't make any sense.
@BTTFMovie3 жыл бұрын
@@Quantum3691 I loved it as a kid, but as an adult I've realized that aside from unclear stakes and bizarre tonal shifts, the story makes no sense. The prophecy is vague. Why exactly is Jarrell the Chosen One? Because Kee happened to turn on the TV to the right channel at the right time to see him talk about looking for a missing kid? Who tipped Jarrell off about the biker gang? How did the biker gang know Tommy Tong? Did he hire them? Why didn't Numspa and his men just kidnap a girl themselves the same way they kidnapped the Child? Why would the bikers sell Cheryl for nothing more than cigarettes and fried rice? The Devil's idea of exchanging the Dagger of Ajanti for the Child is illogical. If it's one of the only weapons capable of killing the Child, why would Jarrell and Kee believe Numspa wanted it for any other use than that? In fact, they're told as much, and still choose to go get it. Why did Jarrell have to endure a trial to obtain the knife? The old man didn't trust him, maybe? But Kee, his daughter, knows Jarrell's the Chosen One (she's his handler likely sent by her father, isn't she?); surely she'd vouch for him. If Numspa could destroy Jarrell "yust" like that, what was stopping him? He knew Jarrell had the knife at that moment and he needed the knife to kill the Child. Why not just kill him right there and take it? Was he worried about the cops and bystanders? He's a demon. He could destroy them "yust" like that too. Jarrell is told that Numspa can't kill the Child until dark. It was night when Numspa stole the knife from Jarrell. Why didn't he kill the Child then?

@matthewrobinson30599 жыл бұрын
Vinnie Moran I remember one time I mentioned Michael Ritchie's name as the director of Golden Child in one of my Cinema classes at Los Angeles Valley College, and idiot classmates looked at me like I had three heads. Goes to show you how MANY people don't get Ritchie's directing style and ignored just about every director who directed Eddie's 1980s films, and just paid attention to Eddie's comic genius and nothing else.
@vinniemoran73628 жыл бұрын
Matthew Robinson Yeah, people usually associate Ritchie with his documentaries or with Redford's The Candidate & Downhill Racer. You're right about his directors, hadn't thought about that. Martin Brest gets more credit for Midnight Run than Beverly Hills Cop. So many of his directors have made landmark films - John Landis with American Wolf in London, Walter Hill and his filmographhy, etc. People just assume it's Eddie that's making it all work. BTW, sorry about the late reply, dunno how I missed this!
