Preparation and first flights. Scratch built rubber powered Wakefield model according to a plan by Keith Palmer. Constructor of the original model : Harald W. Orwin, Norway, in year 1937. Orwin came 2nd with the Golden Eagle III (Kongeörn) on the 'Scandinavian' of the year 1937.
A first plan of the model was published in Frank Zaic's Model Aeronautics Yearbook 1938.

The gliding test flights were what every builder dreams about, awesome. The powered flights were the icing on the cake. Can't wait until you fly it again.

Brings back childhood memories. A truly wonderful time. Launched innumerable Guillow's of every variety and many scratch built but could never make an acceptable prop thrust bearing. Such a beautiful plane.
@rubberfly

Thank you very much for the comment. The exact prop thrust bearing is probably still underestimated. On the Golden Eagle I use bored bicycle nipples and axial ball bearings. I can make good adjustments with the three screws between the nose and the fuselage.

What a beautiful bird! With that much rubber (20 strands!) It must feel like a real fight to hold the prop before launch.
@rubberfly
@rubberfly 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Luckily, the 20-inch prop is tall enough to provide adequate leverage. So far I've only felt the power from half of the max turns...

Incredible! I have been looking at that plan in Zaic's yearbook for 30 years and always wanted to build one. It flies as well as I thought it would. Thanks for posting and be careful with that old bird!

Thank you very much for your comment. I came across the model while browsing ebay for old 'Aeromodeller' magazines. It is the cover of the February 2016 issue. Building this model was the goal. First I had to acquire some skills with other models until I trusted myself to build it then thanks to Keith Palmer's plan.

What a beauty! How long did you take to build it? And did you use tissue because of so then you did an outstanding job on that!
@rubberfly
@rubberfly 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you balsa boy. Around 100 hours... Carving the prop in one piece with the spinner was a real challenge. The model is covered all around with Asuka tissue.
@thebalsaboy
@thebalsaboy 2 жыл бұрын
@@rubberfly sounds like a challenge because it only do you have to carve a larger prop, but you have to have a nose cone not come separately with it. How do you shrink it? A type of dope? Heat shrink? Because I want to have that kind of beautifully wrapped tissue on my models
@rubberfly
@rubberfly 2 жыл бұрын
@@thebalsaboy I covered the fuselage with wet Asuka. In five strips. The Asuka tissue can be slightly warped when wet. The wing and tail are dry-covered and only attached to the edges with GlueStick. Then these edges were additionally fixed with 'Aeronaut Spanlack'. Then wet it with a water mister and fix it on the construction board while it dries. This was followed by 6 layers of diluted dope varnish each fixed for one day to dry. After fine intermediate sanding with 320 grit, the final matt varnish.

Where do you get your kits from?
@rubberfly
@rubberfly 2 жыл бұрын
I build most models 'scratch build' according to plan without kit. I have also built models from the following manufacturers (with flight videos on my channel): Volaré Products, Peck Polymers, Easy Build and The Vintage Model Company.

There was this model-eating tree... at the end of the video. With a few holes in the covering, it could be recovered with a ladder.
@latetotheparty184

So how did you get it out of the tree?
@rubberfly
@rubberfly 11 ай бұрын
That was stressful: Going home with the e-bike and getting the ladder with the car. And an hour later lunch had to be cooked for the school children...A few small holes in the covering needed to be repaired.
