Actually it was the Queen’s mother who was a big fan of the show and she requested that the Golden Girls should perform at the 1988 Royal Variety Performance

Rue McClanahan played Maude Findlay's (Bea Arthur) next-door neighbor on Maude. Betty White played Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. When they were cast on The Golden Girls, Rue was to play Rose and Betty was to play Blanche, but they switched roles because they did not want to be type-cast. Rue & Betty also appeared as semi-regulars on Mama's Family (which itself is a spin-off of The Carol Burnett Show).

It's kinda sad when you know that Bea Arthur (Dororthy) really got affected by the constant jibes at her appearance on the show. She was already insecure about her height and when the writers would put in jokes that she looked like a man etc.. She would sometimes cry because of it. I found that out via one of their documentaries.

That’s the way these should be watched, the way the story develops then the punchline. Hilarious! That’s why you need to watch the whole boxset. I don’t want you spoiling it for yourself MRM by watching these clips, but I am sure if you do buy the whole seasons 1-7 boxset you still would find it funny. I have! 😂

Want you to know that you and one other man are the only 2 people on KZbin who consistently respect their subs by promptly and consistently responding to them. I remember when I first saw that episode where that guy first said he would give Rose (who he thought was Dorothy) 8 dollars, and then when he looked at Dorothy, he offered her 4 dollars, I laughed so hard, I had gotten a mild asthma episode and had to take my inhaler a few times, I laughed THAT hard for awhile. Still to this day when I see that, I laugh hard, that was funny and messed up at the same time, LOL.

They were hard on her appearance for sure. There would be the occasional joke about how the others looked, but they constantly mocked Dorothy's looks. That had to get old for Bea Arthur. I don't see how she was so much different in appearance to the other actresses, apart from having a larger stature.

Blanche/Rue was the youngest and prettiest, but Dorothy was not at all as bad as they made her out to be. Bea Arthur on Maude always played her as a bit of a sex symbol... she was fairly stacked but for some reason her bosom diminished as she got older. I think Bea was somewhat masculine with her height and deep voice, but that's not at all a read... some men actually prefer that. I am sure the jokes about her appearance on the show were hurtful, as she was apparently very shy and sensitive. She took it well on the show. I never liked it when the girls were too mean with each other. A little light shade and teasing is funny, but not downright cruelty. The writing suffered a bit in the middle of the series.

@@sickvokals According to wikipedia, during season six there was uncertainty if Arthur would commit to further seasons once her contract expired. She was tired of doing the how and frustrated with frequent jokes about her appearance. She committed to doing one more season. I know it's wikipedia, but there are sources listed for this. So it does seem the jokes about her appearance contributed to her decision to leave the show, which pretty much was the end of the Golden Girls.

About Rose, I was a little worried where you were headed with that, you see, a friend of mine said I would be Rose! Ironically, she would be Maude! Height and body shape to match also. I am only 4 feet 11 and a half! Yes, we had a friend like Blanche too! LOL Rose energy, well;l that is not me for sure. As a matter of fact, I am a bit younger than Trump, and wish I had even an 8th of his energy and stamina! God has Blessed him that way, May he keep Blessing him. That was just to show how different people of the same age can be. Rose still going strong, and the last of the Golden girls that is still alive. God Bless her. I have to say the earlier seasons of Sanford and son (before Lamont got fat) were as funny if not funnier than Golden Girls.
