What the Golden Girls did very well, was present subject matter in a time-relevant manner. Remember that this all stems from the 1980's / early 1990's. In scenarios that weren't always so bizarre or overembellished. Domestic Abuse for example, wasn't just punches and bruises. It was intimidation, impatience, and self-centeredness. Rex was depicted well here as an example of an abuser. But they didn't have him be so evil, it was unbelievable. They had him displayed in a very real manner that could help paint a clearer picture. Sure, the girls find themselves in various odd situations. But they also find themselves in realistic moments of turmoil and emotion.
@nascarfanatic2425
@nascarfanatic2425 2 жыл бұрын
@@Polomance862 Exactly on Rex, and even nowadays, most abuse isn't physical, believe it or not. However, our media paints it as so extreme anymore. Does it get to violent levels? Absolutely. Is it always the case? Not even close. If you want an example that I can recall where there was a very abusive relationship that wasn't even really physical, there was a girl who was in a relationship with a guy who was constantly controlling her, and staring her down all the time. He wasn't physically violent, but he was very controlling. That's ultimately how Rex is. Not all abusers are psychopaths, but all victims of abuse need help. Doesn't matter if they're physically hurt or just emotionally damaged. Charities also don't do very well at trying to help with domestic abuse either, believe it or not. There was an example of one where they tried to do an example of children who grow up in abusive homes. They did one for a girl, and one for a boy. This was the girl: "One day, my husband will kill me." Here was the boy: "When I grow up, I will beat my wife." Ignoring the obvious sexism, (especially the misandry) this sends a really toxic message. It basically says that the girl who got rescued from an abusive home shouldn't trust anyone, and the boy who got rescued from an abusive home is going to do something horrible, and he should start loathing himself. One thing about The Golden Girls' way of tackling domestic abuse, though, is that considering domestic abuse is still a major issue today, (especially with COVID) this message aged like a fine wine.

There's these beautiful moments where you see what a self respecting, power house she is. She doesn't let anyone disrespect her or her friends. ugh she saw he was a man who is capable of beating up women. She was protecting herself. The fact that it needed to go this far despite the numerous talks Dorothy had with Blanche but Blanche being the man hungry slut that she is liked the 'manly' idea of Rex until she realized it was not so great. The fact that it took so long and almost got her best friend physically in trouble, shows Blanche is NOT s good friend. Plus, don't forget the numerous times that 'great' friend roasted Dorothy on her looks and straight forwardly told her she's ugly.

While everybody knows that Dorothy could've easily beat the holy grail out of this man, she never would have. Out of the four girls living in the house, she was the only one living with her feet firmly stuck to the ground. And she knew Blanche very well. Blanche wasn't all just a sexy, vibrant woman that she let on to be. She was a woman who was deeply lost when George died. She was trying to find her one and only love, because she had lost that love when her husband died. And she was very compelled in finding that same love again, because she couldn't deal with the fact that George was really her TRUE love, and could never be replaced. While Dorothy was the "sane" one of the four girls, she never could bring it upon herself to tell Blanche that she would never find another love that would feel the same. Hense why she always defended her, regardless of her knowledge of the truth. Dorothy was a true friend, and a friend that most of us are jealous of having for ourselves. We all need a Dorothy in our lives. She keeps up grounded enough to live and enjoy, but never stops us from letting our heads swim up in the clouds for a while, enough to enjoy and embrace the moments that will make memories. This show really was before it's time. And while I am of the next generation, and this show was off the air before I was even born, this is still my very favorite show. It discussed subjects far beyond it's time. These women who made this show, the writers, the producers, etc. They are LEGENDS. and I can't wait to watch this show with my own kids, 10 or so years from now. ❤️❤️❤️

Dorothy wasn't perfect, but in this case, she was "stunned!" There's NO doubt she could have "beaten the Holy Grail out of Rex," but she didn't have to, since Rex told Blanche that if he walked out that door, he wasn't coming back! Blanche couldn't replace George, no matter how hard she tried, and Dorothy said that she was also a victim of dating abuse! I loved this show, because it taught important life lessons, while also being a comedy!

Today in GUST (College Success) Class, we had to show video examples of people/characters not being able to control their emotional intelligence. For Rex, if he were to have been more patient as well as re-trace what he said to and about Blanche as well as thought twice before putting his hands on Dorothy, things would have been more calmer. But, with most men like Rex, it is impossible most of the time, because those kind of men don't think before they act. Dorothy was right to stand up for Blanche and to make things clear to Rex. She did the right thing.
