The Golden Rule is Garbage Advice for Marriage!

Follow the Golden rule in your marriage is Garbage Advice! I followed the Golden rule. I did to my wife as I would have her do to me. And it lead me straight to a miserable marriage. It lead me towards selfishness and pride, not away from those. And as we all know. Any marriage, any relationship requires intimacy and selflessness and humility and sacrifice and consideration and compromise. Does the golden rule necessarily lead to those things as we have interpreted it today?

Hey Jimmy, the Golden Rule is often misunderstood, so I hope you don’t mind if I point out that you’re apparently misunderstanding it as so many others have (including me!). Loving my spouse “as I want to be loved” doesn’t mean loving them by doing/saying to them what I want them to do/say to me. Go one layer deeper: It means *discovering what they long for* and doing that! Because we all want to be *understood* and loved in ways that are meaningful to us, something you articulate soooo well in your other videos! PS Jimmy your videos are terrific. Insightful, succinct, and inspiring. Thank you! ❤

I always thought about the golden rule as everyone wanting to be treated with kindness,patience etc..I feel everyone wants to be treated that way.

That's wrong. Some people want to be respected. Some people want authenticity.some people want their authority to be respected. Some people want you to engage them and confront them,to not be a pussy in other words. People will take advantage of you if what you say is your golden rule.

The only thing I don't like lengthy videos is the bible stuff and the assumptions that everyone watching these videos are Christian. I'm not and never will be but that doesn't make me a bad person. I have my reasons. I have also never been married and after what I've been through, never will be. BUT I LOVE EVERYTHING else about your videos Jimmy!! In fact, it was your videos that lead to my relationship breaking up a few weeks ago. I mean that I'd told him once again that I could no longer tolerate his defensive behaviour whenever I dared to show that I was hurt my his thoughtless, selfish behaviour. But it was your videos that validated everything that I'd said that I was feeling because of his selfish behaviour. And I learnt that I was justified in standing my ground with my boundaries about how wanted to be treated. But more importantly, I learnt that my boundaries are my self love and that I do not have to feel guilty and don't deserve to be called needy and difficult.

When we got married, our parents gave us their best advice. The one that has stayed with us the most is that the golden rule for marriage is « Do unto the other what you would like done to you IF YOU WERE THAT PERSON »

I don't want to be touched. My son got hit by a car in 2001. My Dad is dead and my Mom has dementia and won't stop attacking me thorugh her social network at church. I recently collapsed physcially due to a health condition that was related to the pandemic. I need personal space and alone time.

Interesting idea but here are other considerations... In Genesis 1:26-27, let US make man in our image,27 God created him. male and female 1. Has the person actually read the Bible? A lot of people quote things they have heard 2. Did they read the context? Often when people read, they don't get the whole book or historical context? 3. Are they simply weaponizing a certain scripture? Submission for wives. When actually the text also says submit one to another. Ephesians 5 has a much higher standard for husbands that most will never quote or live. But to your question, I think even if the male read the entirety of text as relating to him and following it, we would have drastically better outcomes.

Treat others as you want to be treated, based on what you learn from the Scriptures, not just any old rules or standards that fall out of the sky on your head. Selfless love is what that is. I seriously frown on saying that Jesus didn't know what he was saying.
