I love it in line with my left arm. I do tend to address the ball with a slightly open face. Shawn Clement is my favorite KZbin coach. He really makes more sense than most.

I have struggled with an inside take away for years (12 degrees) and just noticed I lean the shaft slightly forward for all clubs, by tilting it slightly straight will that improve my takeaway to a more neutral position? I'm a decent striker of the ball 10 handicap but when I use SkyPro it's always telling me I'm too inside on the takeaway also I struggle hitting my 3 wood should I lean it more backwards? I almost always hook with my driver with the ball positioned this far forward (inside of the heel). I believe it is because the club face has gone past perpendicular to my body by this point in the swing. Any tips?

This did a great job of describing shaft angle from the front facing camera position, but what about shaft angle from the down the line camera position? In other words, where should the shaft point in the down the line view?... towards the pelvis, waist, abdomen or chest perhaps? I'm thinking of someone like DeChambeau, where the shaft is angled strait up the arm and towards the chest, Vs. someone like Furyk where the hands are held very low and the shaft is angled through upper thigh almost. A quick video on this would be quite interesting, as I am curious about what affect this has on the swing in general.

This is very helpful to me,I’m playing with the hands to far forward and feeling really twisted up and hooking balls too often as a result. The thing I’d like to know is what do I need to do next to compress the ball better from a neutral shaft position like this. I was taught to address the ball with shaft lean to get me into a better position to compress the ball and hit it in the middle of the club face. I think over time I’ve got a bit muddled and increased the amount of lean to a detrimental amount. Other parts of my swing have improved and the forward lean is now starting to hold me back.

I know it's been a while since your post, but I had also started to place my hands to forward causing hooks and fat shots. I set up now with the end of the grip nearer my belt buckle. I also initiate my swing with a slight hand press forward. My ball striking really has improved. Not saying it works for everybody but worth a try.

To simplify all these questions below on positions and shaft lean would it not be better to explain this to all types players by just saying ideally you want the line of the shaft to form a line with the lead arm and point towards the left shoulder? Would this not automatically determine the correct amount of shaft lean for each player and allow all players to preset they're own impact position? Cant grip have a profound effect on the position of the hands and natural amount of shaft lean you play with? Example: I play with a strong grip, therefore when I set up as per the video I have a bow in my lead wrist, yes there is shaft lean but there is a breakdown from the clubhead through to the shoulder, its right in the middle at the grip. So I preset my hands with more shaft lean to ensure there is no breakdown in the lead arm thanks for the videos guys they're awesome

Surely if you start with the club leaning a good way forward with a square face and then return to that position at impact everything is fine ? Are you saying in the downswing the hands want to return to a neutral position and hence the clubface is closed.

So much conflicting advice. Other instructors recommend forward shaft lean and strong grip. I guess both methods can work. Just depends on the execution.

I have a very strong grip and my hands are well ahead on my irons. If they aren't I can't get s good takeaway and the shaft and clubhead tend to get off plane. So I agree with you. If I address the ball neutral as they are suggesting, my swing goes to hell. If I do it my way the ball goes very straight and the ball flight is fine. The driver is the only club where I'm close to neutral. But even then hands are slightly ahead. And I can hit it 250-300 straight like this with a slight fade.

When I was little I learned to lean the shaft slightly forward so the end was pointing at my left hip. I've been trying for weeks to set up how you guys describe in the video but its so awkward and I feel like my wrists aren't hinging easily and the takeaway is very uncomfortable would this affect my trajectory at all or at impact will I be in the correct place? and when I chip am I losing loft? I've seen some players like Rory Mcilroy play with the shaft forward as I do, but I'm not sure what to do.

Just get the shaft to the point until it's almost an extension of your lead arm. That will vary based on the length of your arms. There's no right spot for every person. Front wrist should be as flat as possible. For some this is inner thigh for some it's pointed to hip bone. It's a body to body thing.

Would moving the hands forward towards the target just prior to taking the club back have an affect? I sometimes find it difficult to take the club back immediately without moving the hands forward first (old habit).

Dan Lister I’ve seen a ton of great golfers have a nudge forward before backswing is initiatiated. You should do it if it helps especially with your tempo.

Good players that start with shaft lean also tend to set the hands lower. Hands forward actually opens the face; hands lower will orient it more to the left.

This is true if you play every ball off of your front foot. But if you want to move the ball back in your stance your club will inevitably have more shaft lean at address.

Guys, I need to know that the position of my head in relation to the ball is ok. A demonstration will not really help. Could it work if you fit a camera to your head and let us see what you see when you address the ball with different clubs, i.e. short iron, mid iron, long iron and driver? And perhaps vary the head position so that I can see where I am.

The manufacturer sets the shaft lean for each club, from the sand wedge to the 3 iron. As the clubs get longer you will notice the shaft lean is a lot less than say the wedge, perhaps a quarter of an inch per club. Hold a club in front of you and you can see the lean.

paul casy and roary mclroy both say hands forward at address even with driver , they play on the tour I think I will stick with those two SHAFT LEAN IS RIGHT
