And the directors did not want the actress to act like the animated Mai. So she had no choice but to be an altered version. It's not that no one messed up, it's that she- as a teenager in a minor role- did not have the ability to do something different and the people to be annoyed at (if you don't like the portrayal) are the writers and directors

Mai looks the worst, and with Azula, the biggest fix they could do now is try to whiten her skin, fix her hairline to make her forehead smaller, and have Azula's actual hairline, give her Azula's sharp nails, and maybe start thinking about eyeliner or something. I think Elizabeth Yu can still get an intimidating 14-year old vibe by simply being calm and collected. She acts too much like Zuko from the animated show. It might seem kinda weird to say, but maybe she should take some small notes from Jenna Ortega's performance as Wednesday Addams. Hear me out, Wednesday has the cold, unbothered, calculated sociopath angle in her facial expressions, posture, and delivery. If she does the same while also throwing in threats given with a calm tone, and occasionally a snide smile, I think it should work.

Yes! Appearance wise, she is an excellent Katara, but personality wise, she falls short. In the animated series, Katara is warm-hearted, but she DOES have a temper and can be feisty. In the live action, she is more soft spoken.

Sokkas character ark is completely gone, he wasn’t “sexist” which made going to kyoshi island useless, he was never taught his lesson about respect. This is the same lesson that helped him develop into the leader he becomes in the later seasons Aang is already serious about being the avatar and doesn’t develop into it, unlike the show where he actually acted like a 12 yr old kid. The complete reason the whole show started is because aang ran away from his responsibilities and now he’s just completely on board with being the avatar?? Imo they changed enough

I 100% agree with everything you said. Sokka and Zuko are 11/10. Ozai too. Aang is 9/10 for me, his actor did well but the script was meh. Iroh felt SOOO off :( Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee all need to be recast and they DESPERATELY need new wigs. I think Yues actress was great but the wig was 💀. Also put some white gel in her eyebrows for gods sake. The Kyoshi warriors were great, i was pleasantly surpirsed by their makeup.

I saw ty lee's actor in other things like the babysitters club on netflix and i think she could deliver that bubbly personality that ty lee has in the animated show. I think she just didnt really have much to show off her acting. I'd say the same for mai because she barely was in the show too, but i dont know the actress. Anyways, hopefully next season they have bigger roles to change minds on their casting.

Azula actor looks that way because her face is round, which in most case don't fit the hairstyle that she's using. the hair style that fits her. If she puts her hair down like, it'll slim her head. Another problem is how the her head was shot on film. The camera needs to set a proper angle to make sure face looks thinner. Theres far too much close up, like right into her nose close up.

I think they tried too hard to cast people who look the right age instead of fitting actors which doesn't make sense because none of the animated characters actually looked like the age they were supposed to be.

In the movie Zuko was Dev Patel, of course he is a great actor. But that doesn't make Dallas Liu bad, most of the fandom agree that he was the best in the cast, he can fight and acts not only with his face but adds body movements and voice. Acting and talent has to be the most important things than just look like the animated (there is Emma Watson who is beautiful but can't sing a shit and a piece of wood has more emotions than her)

Agree with the most part, but I could still pass the uncle Iroh one. the 3 fire girl, Yue plus katara, I really hope the better version. In my mind katara is a fierce though yet naive girl, not a softie homie girl that being portrayed in the series. Although this one look more wise but the katara in the animation is much more to the reckless side. Yue hair was definitely the main problem, but there is also something in the personality wise that I couldn't see it fit in the animated version. While the 3 fire girl, not gonna be mean but their figure is definitely didn't portrayed the warrior of fire nation girl, also the Chinese culture. There is a reason why Ty lee being portrayed as extremely thin and lean girl, while Mai is an acrobatics in the circus before joining azula, that's why she tend to be small in figure too.

I think Iroh is a perfect one for the live-action. It was a little toned down versus the animated version, but it gives more depth to the character, and highlights his father-like influence to Zuko. With Azula… this one surprised me too. If they could only find a young version of Lucy Liu, that would be the perfect one for the visuals. Same goes with the character Mai in the LA series. Sokka visually is perfect… though he’s dragging his humor hard in the LA series. Hope to hear more of his funny lines in the next season.

Mai and Azusa are short and pudgy and their acting is too deadpan, even for Mai. Ty lee was just fine. Iroh sounded like he was doing a presentation in a board meeting rather than being the laid back goofball with a wise humble side. Zuko was pretty well casted but not aggressive enough toward is cohorts, he used to abuse iroh a lot in the animated show. The show really forces a conclusion to a lot of the actors rolls without them playing the part. Also, June thought iroh was an ugly old horndog and was disgusted by him, yet she finds him cute in the live action and constantly states it.

Iroh's casting was great--I really like the actor. It was just his personality that was off. Iroh adds pretty much all of the humor and levity on Zuko's side of the story but you get very very little of that side of Iroh's personality in this series. It's what makes him such a great character; he can go from tea obsessed funny grandpa to deeply emotional mentor to straight up badass Dragon of the West. We were missing too many sides of his personality. Hopefully they'll adjust it in season 2. Mai and Ty Lee were boring. I actually think they were added too early and should have appeared in season 2 like they do in the animated series. They added nothing to the story. Superficially, I HATE their hair. Why do they (and Azula) have those huge chunky pieces of hair framing their faces? It should just be a small thin section left out. It just looks weird. A lot of the hair work in the series needs an upgrade. Some of the wigs and beards looking really bad for a show with such a big budget. Overall it was a good season with several problems but nothing that can't be fixed with better pacing, better dialogue, more detail to the characters' personalities and, hopefully, better hair.

Something i dont see people talking about the netflix show more often is something they did in the opening of of the show which i feel is the ONE thing they did better than the original cartoon. The opening scene in the netflix show actually showed us life before the war with aang and monk giatsu (idk how to spell his name) in the cartoon, we are just told he is aang's mentor figure and best friend so when aang finds out hes dead, it doesn't really mean anything since we dont get to know him. In the netflix show, monk GYAAATsu is an ACTUAL CHARACTER who we get to actually see. It makes me feel something when we find him dead since we actually DO have a connection to him. It's like how in star wars, no one cares about the jedi dying in order 66. However, after the clone wars made plo koon, mace and kit fisto actual characters, order 66 hits different. Same can be said here. The cartoon is still 100x better than the netflix show. I still think the netflix show is just a lesser version of the original but i have to give them credit with that one scene

I’m fine with the casting of Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, Yue and Iroh. One of the reasons is because this is a different adaptation and not a retcon. Besides, since Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, and Iroh will have a much bigger role in the second season, we’ll see what else they can do with these characters

And they also got Katara wrong, they water her down 🫠 her anger is a main trait of the character, also Sokka's sexism is important for the start of the story, is the reason Katata gets mad and frees Aang, and the Kioshi warriors teach him he's wrong, that's how the relationship with Suki starts, but here she just... kinda follows him around for no reason, there's some things they decided not to use or do from the og and it makes the life a kinda weird
