The Good and Bad of the Queen Mary 2. Not all cruise ships are perfect for everyone. For some the Queen Mary 2 is the best cruise ship in the World. For others it's not even close. Let's take a look at the good and bad of the Queen Mary 2 and what you can expect on board.
Cruising to Alaska - Port of Vancouver. I'm off for my cruise to Alaska on the Royal Princess. First sop on the Alaska cruise is the city of Vancouver where I watch for the arrival of the Royal Princess.

The best cruise experiences of my life have been on Cunard where I lock my phone in the safe for the entire duration and eat, read, sleep, relax, play chess and watch films and lectures. My idea of hell would be a Costa cruise or one of the mega ships full of youngsters getting lashed.

Went on Cunard's Queen Elizabeth last year, San Francisco to Sydney. Lots of sea days but never boring. There's actually a lot to do on Cunard. I really appreciated the lack of piped-in music and constant announcements over the loud speaker. Just the captian's whimsical update announcement at noon. I went Britannia class with balcony cabin (Cunard's "lowest" class) and really didn't need more luxury!

A word on accessibility aboard QM2 from a mobility aid user. I’m 31 and I use a foldable walker because of cerebral palsy. I found the ship perfect for me. I appreciate the toned down style, and the crew was spectacular at seeing to it that any needs were met. I was traveling in a non-accessible stateroom on purpose because I knew I could probably manage and I tend to avoid booking those rooms in deference to wheelchair users who truly need them. The only minor inconvenience is the width of the door, which was barely wide enough for my deployed walker to get through, but that is on me. My companion and I had a wonderful time and will do it again. Don’t let mobility concerns stop you. The Cunard folks are fantastic at making sure you have a stellar experience.

Really nice description - thank you. Our 4th voyage on QM2 coming up; also cruised on Qs Vic and Liz. I think you have given a good impression of the ship, although I might add a few points: there are other daytime activities, such as ballroom dancing classes, fencing classes and similar things going on. You do not have to dress up for dinner: you can wear casual clothes any night, but can then only dine at the buffet and use one of the lounges. Ballroom dancing is a serious thing on Cunard - every night there is dancing to strict tempo recorded music and dancing to a live band. It's one of the reasons many people cruise with Cunard - and they have dance hosts for singles. The other point worth making is that drinks are horribly expensive and the drinks packages are no bargain either. You can take a limited amount of your own booze on board but only to drink in your cabin - big corkage charge if you take your own into a restaurant. And if you do overdo it, the cabins have really comfortable beds and great sound-proofing so you can always sleep it off. We think of these cruises as really like staying full-board at a5* hotel with a different view out of the window.

That was my FIRST cruise was on Cunard's Queen Mary 2 and I loved it in spite of my relative complaints about it. I LOVED the subdued atmosphere of it, they did have a schedule of activities, but unlike the mega ships few thing overlapped each other and the night shows are based on your dining seating, so early dinner meant you went to the 2nd show. I liked the slow dinner courses, so you get to know your table mates. The staff was wonderful, they're there when you need them, otherwise they stayed out of your way. Just a note that they do have a disco G32 which is just past the Queen's room at the aft of the ship (deck 2 & 3).

We've done four Transatlantic crossings on QM2 and love it. As you say, even in big seas she just cuts through it, we had 30 foot waves and storm force 10 winds on our last round trip to New York and didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Most of the year I don't get the chance to dress formally and so enjoy wearing a dinner suit and bow tie on the formal evenings, which are on alternate nights of the voyage, on the other nights jacket without tie for men and normal dresses or trousers and tops for women are usual. If you don't like dressing up the Kings Court buffet is another alternative.

While I normally agree with most of the comments on your presentations, I feel I should mention certain items. The QM2 is an ocean liner, the only one on the seas. The Queen Elizabeth has a reinforced bow, and can make the crossing, but sometimes on a southerly route. A gentleman in the evening need only wear a jacket, not a tie. For formal nights, a suit is appropriate, or if one desires, a tux. You probably did not get to the trivia nights at the Pub, you missed some great fun. You did not mention the dance classes during the day, they can be quite funny. Afternoon tea is a feature of Cunard. A couple of the pictures used may have come from one of the other ships. As you may gather, I have had great experiences on this ship, two crossings, the Forids of Norway, and down into the Met. With the stress of daily life, it is quite relaxing to experience a crossing. Be prepared to gain weight, the food is fantastic.

Cunard is my favorite cruise line. It is five star, white glove service. You will find an older crowd on Cunard. That is okay with me. It feels more relaxing to me and so sophiscated. I don’t need all the rides, boardwalk, Central Park, rock climbing wall and bumper cars. That is all fine, if that is what you want on your cruise vacation. If I want to go to an amusement park I can do that at home. For me, I like to relax on a cruise. One really nice offering is the Canyon Ranch Spa. The thalassotheraphy pool is an amazing experience. So for my bucket list, I would like to fly to England, do some sight seeing, and then board Cunard for a transatlantic cruise home to the states. I have been on the QE2 so I would like to try the Queen Victoria or the Queen Elizabeth. If I wait until 2022 a fourth ship will be added to the fleet. How fun would that be to take a maiden voyage on a brand new Cunard ship. Thanks for the video on Cunard Don. Very memorable cruise.

Honest, clear and entertaining picture of what a trans-Atlantic crossing is like on the QM2. Well done and more informative with regard to atmosphere than other reviews of the ship. I crossed in spring of 2014 and loved it. The ship is indeed quite beautiful. Much of its "quirkiness" is fun when exploring. I found the staff to be uniformly fri9endly, respectful and helpful. The sea was rough enough on two of my days to produce a constant rolling. It made walking about a bit challenging, but I slept like a baby. I enjoyed it very much.

Jane Gordois As a fellow bibliophile introvert, I would recommend Holland America Line for a first time cruise. Also, if you like classical music, their ships feature Lincoln Center performers playing chamber music (and some pops) in an intimate setting.

I did not do an ocean crossing, but I did take the Queen Mary 2 from Quebec City to New York City. Your description of the activities, dining and overall ambiance is spot on. The artwork and Art Deco era styling in the hallways, stairways and Britannia dining room is magnificent. The service and most of the shore excursions were top notch. I'm not in to getting dressed up for dinner every night, but except for one night, there were casual options. I also liked that there were many uncrowded, quiet places to either watch the scenery go by or to read. It exceeded my expectations.

Hi, I did the transatlantic this past May. I agree with most but not all that Don has to say. For variety of food check out the Corinth Lounge, they have all meals and afternoon tea and different than the rest of the ship. Not a buffet per say but plates for tasting. I especially recommend their Tea over Ice, I had it in the afternoon with whatever delightful sweets concoctions they had on for afternoon tea. There is also a nightclub, it is hidden behind the ballroom, if you enter the ballroom or Queens room, look to the right side of the stage, go through those doors and there is a night club with their house band. They played old rock and roll staples. The pub was usually pretty busy but right across from it is the lounge with the godiva chocolate, they were lovely there and my husband and I often sat there with a drink and listened to the band but without the crowd. Fantastic lectures, we had the lead singer from the Byrds on board who talked all about the early days of rock and roll, with stories about working with the Beatles and Dylan. We also had an irish singer from the West End in London, the equivalent of Broadway in NYC, who belted out all the big broadway hits from CATS etc. There was an archeologist and an astronomer, some brilliant lectures all free. There were also some interesting classes like watercolour painting and floral arranging but these came with $35 fee which got expensive after a few days. Loved the hot milk you could get with room service breakfast, they also had it late at night where the pizza is served, you could use it to make really milky coffee or tea and they had Horlicks, which I find gross but is a british thing. (A malt beverage) Don is right though, not for the mobility challenged unless you just go from your cabin to the dining room and avoid floors 2 and 3. Also access to library is problematic for mobility challenged, there is stairs on one side but not the other, of course I went down the side with stairs, by the time I got back to the elevators where I could cross over I was too tired and went back to my room. Decor in the room is pretty dated and low ceilings, and a bit small compared to some other ships I've been on but service was excellent.

@@hoodatdondar2664 HI there. We are a Portsmouth family and the navy and shipyard has been in the family for generations. However, my father worked out he could earn more by serving in the merchant navy and headed off to Southampton. As an engineer he was posted to the Queen Mary and served as a junior rank. His dad had been a Navy stoker in WWII so it was a big step up! By your use of the word 'draft' I am assuming you are not British where we have 'conscription' and therefore I shall explain that the Merchant Navy is a 'reserved occupation' (an occupation which would assist a war effort) and counts as your service, or exempts you from conventional National Service - but you still have to do your time before you can return to your home and job.

Don, one thing to mention: the QM2, unlike her older sister, is the first transatlantic liner to have swingout stabilizers. One of the great things of a Transatlantic is you change time an hour a day, When you end your cruise you are on the destination time zone . I like this so I'm not jet lagged on my first say in Europe or when I get back to the USA.

This type of cruise sounds interesting to me. I like that you have options in cruising depending on what you're looking for in travel. Mostly I like lots of activities but I'd totally throw this in to relax and rejuvenate. Thanks, Don!

Another great video Don. Very interesting information and the Queen Mary 2 looks like a great ship. My wife and I are looking forward to doing a transatlantic someday. Have a wonderful week and keep the video’s coming!

Cunard did use to be for everyone - they offered three classes of service, and kept the three classes apart. That was when you had to cross by ship. Interesting thing - the third class, or steerage, for one-way (mostly) trips to the New World for immigrants, was the biggest money maker! Catering to the ‘upper crust’ is nice, but the big cash is in serving the needs of the bulk of the people. Changed in ‘24, when the US slammed the immigration door shut. But, people were in the mass, getting more prosperous, so second class was expanded, and mass tourism/travel was taking off, and Cunard served that market.

I would love to take a transatlantic cruise on the QE2. Days at sea are the most relaxing to me on any cruise. No getting off board for a side trip. Just relax at your own pace.

Very good review. Travelled on her four times, States twice, Norway, Canaries and Madeira. Magnificent ship. Glad you emphasised ocean going liner. Deffo not to be confused with cruise ships. You get what you pay for!

Nostalgic is a great word to describe this experience, as Don did so well. Sounds very relaxing, but I’d find the formality difficult to maintain every day.

Nancy Harte, I believe formal/semi formal is only for dinner as well as evening activities after 6 or 7pm. You can wear whatever you want during the day.

I managed semi-formal twice in a week cruise to Alaska, and it’s very foreign to me. I live my life casual! It would be fun to dress up-but a new wardrobe would be in order!
