Today I'm sharing my honest review of The Good and the Beautiful, including the pros and cons, of the Language Arts and Handwriting homeschool curriculum. We used Level 1 and Level 3 Language Arts for our 2018-2019 homeschool year, and the Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4 Handwriting curriculum. Look inside the curriculum and check out what we liked and what we didn't like about The Good and the Beautiful and see if this might be a good fit for your family.

Thank you for the video. I just received the good and beautiful lang arts kindergarten level and we are going to start it the last 60 days of this school year then finish the other 60 lessons the beginning of 1st grade. My son is 5 and very behind in speech so I am excited to be able to start this curriculum with him. So far from what I have seen looking through the book I love it. I have ordered the lang arts for level 1 and 2 and the math for 2nd grade. I wish I had found this curriculum before I ordered his math this year and 1st grade. Using horizons and rod and staff this year and next for math. I am a police wife homeschooling an 8th grader and kindergartner so it's been very interesting so far to say the least. Thank you and be blessed!

Thank you! I just started using this but without the flashcards or readers. I do use the "familiar words"/sight words and spelling lists. I love that the pdf is free; we haven't had to write much yet in level 1 so sitting at the computer and going through it is working fine for now.

Loved your review. Could you possibly share what you chose for Language Arts for this upcoming year? Thanks for sharing your experience with TGTB.

smitha 6fm Thanks! Glad you liked it. We are going to use Bravewriter from Julie Bogart this year! I’ll be doing the Jot It Down and Faltering Ownership programs along with the Arrow guides and The Writer’s Jungle. I’m super excited to try it out!

We are new to homeschooling. How do you know what "level" is appropriate to choose? She would be going into 4th grade if we were going to public school.

I’m not a fan of trying to keep “on standard” with public schools since all kids learn at different levels. The most important thing is to work with them where they are at and not try to force too much too soon. TGTB has a placement test you can take on their website. I would suggest trying level 3 first to see where she is at and if that’s too easy, move up to level 4. You can always download the PDF version of the entire curriculum for free as well so you can look through the whole year’s curriculum to see which would be the best fit and then print it out for her! Best wishes!

We are busy with level k and we found out that the mini readers are on the dry side.My little one doesn't like them at all.We do other readers in parallel.

@@heatherjolly8389 I am sorry to hear that! I used it with PreK-2nd grade. I liked that it teaches how to use small crayons, pencils and chalk bits to help with appropriate grip and writing. I loved using playdoh, magnets, wood, and chalk to learn letters. But I haven't used their typing, cursive, or above 2nd grade...so I don't know beyond that. What was it that you didn't like? I'd love to know more!

On the site it says level 1 for example is for an advanced first grader, average 2nd grader so to me it's for 2nd grade. We are using level 1 for second and level 4 for 5th.

Thank you so much for your honest review. So many of The Good and the Beautiful reviews on youtube are all raves and gushing about the curriculum. Its been difficult to find honest reviews that cover both the positives and some of the negatives. We are three lessons into level 3 of the language arts and I can already see that it's not going to be a great fit. It feels a little disjointed and my twins aren't impressed.

Tracy Bates Oh, you’re so welcome! I’m hesitant to talk negatively about things since it is great for many people, but I also want to share our experience so that others out there can make educated decisions! 😊 I hope you find something that fits your family! I’ve heard great things about Language Lessons for a Living Education and Bravewriter. (We are doing Bravewriter this year).

Why does honest mean negative? If I made a video about TGATB, there wouldn't be anything negative I would say and, yet, I would be giving an honest review.

Candace Tree, my comment thanked the creator for a review detailing what I felt was a complete review. Back when she uploaded this video, it was difficult to find any reviews that weren't completely gushing about TGTB. It was nice to see an objective review, and I very much appreciate it because not every curriculum is a perfect fit for every family. I'm happy it works for you.

@@tracybates1696 Again, just because someone gushes doesn't mean they are not being honest. Why is saying something negative the mark of objectivity? People don't have to say negative things to be credible.

Candace Tree I never said that. I was simply stating that I appreciated her approach to the pros AND cons because at that time it was really difficult to find review videos that did not seem unbiased. Not saying they were, but it felt that way. It was literally nearly impossible to find a single negative review on KZbin for awhile. I'm one that likes to read reviews, both positive and negative, before i make decisions on purchases. And i wish i would have found a video like this one before i jumped on the bandwagon. So yes, at that time it was refreshing to watch what I felt was a real review, not all sunshine and rainbows, so I stand by my comment. It's really not a big deal and I'm sorry if my review wasnt to your liking. Perhaps using "honest" was the wrong choce of words. Again, that's great that it works for you. We bailed after two months but to each their own. Best of luck in the upcoming school year.
