I wish Richard briers and felicity Kendal had come back in 2000 and made a one off episode where they’d sold their house, moved into a smaller place and were living in luxury from the equity! With Tom good revisiting the retired manager to tell him he lost!

You go to the bank manager with a plausible idea and he chews it to bits!

In hindsight the irony of those figures is spectacular. The Good Life was great. Why isn't there television of this calibre made any longer?
@toddcharry12 жыл бұрын
In 01 the Good's house was on the market for 570k pounds. The houses weren't in Surbiton, but in Northwood. Tom was right about soaring house prices.

We are expected to suspend our disbelief and accept the house is in the Avenue, Surbiton. Never mind how much houses are in Northwood, what are they in the Avenue, Surbiton?

Haha - in retrospect the bank missed a trick there!

Tom : You dash out of the sauna, roll about in the nude, and then Jerry gives you a bashing with a birch twig. Margo: He most certtainly does not! Jerry; Oh, damn.

You can add a few bob on that house price, although the programme was filmed in the North London suburb of Northwood it was set in Surbiton.

The bank manager looks, and sounds, to me, like he could be the fellow who played the young Ebanezer Scrooge in the version of 'A Christmas Carol', starring Alister Sim.

That's because he is. George Cole.
@malcolmclements9254 Жыл бұрын
George Cole was a orphan. Alistair Sim took him under his wing and played him in 'A Cottage To Let.' Later he was in the St Trinian films as 'Flash.' Alistair Sim played the headmistress in drag.

This scene has Arthur Daly written all over it. The first series of Minder was 1979...any coincidence?

Long live late 1970s leisurewear! Where did they get that rig out, Lillywhites? I can't quite make out the logo on Jerry's top, it looks a bit like Fred Perry with a bit of sticky tape used to obscure the obvious product placement. Though later on in the show, Jerry is clearly seen in a Lacoste cap.

@ej159 because they simply don't have the talent to make programmes like this! So called 'comedians' these days have to resort to swearing and jokes about sex to get a laugh! I love programmes like this, I grew up watching Morcambe and Wise, Rising Damp, Good Life, etc thank god for KZbin and dvd's/videos. Otherwise there'd be no comedy left to watch.

@dmpcornwall Scarily, yes, if I were to transport myself to 1978 and met Penny Keith, I so would...

George reminds me of my first bank manager in 1978. I went to him with an equally good idea...and got a similar response. Strange creatures bank managers, they can't seem to grasp the thinking of the common man.

So a house in the late 70's in Surbiton value of £25000.. and the Bank saying in 30 years time.... what is the value of the house now?.... hmm.. £750,000?... and Tom only wants £2000 per year.... If I was the bank manager.. I would be grabbing Tom's hand has quick I could... 😂

The real houses are in Northwood, but the value of them today is over 1 million now.

Actually it is a really good idea in terms of risk and reward to the bank, better investments then the ones they've been making over the past couple of years.

Let's say you manage to find a bank manager and offer him the same idea. 250,000 house a total 400,000 after you die along the same terms, would he accept it knowing from recent history how prices increase.
@WilliamSmith-mx6ze6 ай бұрын
I hope the bank went on to sack George Cole. A house in the Avenue, Surbiton. Tom Good says it could be a £100,000 house. Talk about a £2 million house!
