I love how they bring the utilitarian dilemma back around after meeting Jason's family. The happiness pump idea is one of the biggest arguments against gentle parenting. Doesn't matter if your kids are happy, they need to grow into good people. There are ways to do that without abuse, but consequences need to be present. Doug might make Raymond happy by giving him his shoe, but the overall good in the universe is still negative when anyone else has to deal with Raymond after the lessons he took from that interaction.

that's a good point, its almost like that old adage it takes a village to raise a child, as how anybody interacts and treats that child will impact the world at large when that child grows up! If you're letting the child get away with murder, they will absolutely have a negative impact on the world when they're older!

That's not what gentle parenting is at all --- you're describing permissive parenting, which is damaging, yes. But what you are describing isn't gentle parenting. Gentle parenting is another word for authoritative parenting --- it's not authoritarian, and it's not permissive. It's in the middle, and holding firm but kind, common sense boundaries with children is a very important concept to gentle parenting --- kids don't get away with murder, they don't get any toy they want, and they aren't protected from facing disappointment or feeling negative emotions. Negative emotions, like anger and sadness, are just as important to being a human as happiness. It's about not demonizing any emotion, so a child doesn't become like Doug Forcett --- this close to snapping because he's so dissociated from negative emotions that he has no idea how to navigate them in a healthy way --- and punishing himself when he does have negative emotions because he's taught that the normal range of human emotions makes him a bad person, when in reality, emotions aren't bad or good, they're just human and all serve a purpose. What children are actively taught instead is how to navigate their emotions when disappointment DOES happen and co-regulate their emotions with their parents until their brains and nervous systems learn to regulate that on their own (example, deep breathing with your child). If you set a reasonable boundary with a kid, you don't give in because they got angry or disappointed. You do offer empathy for their emotions though, without reacting back or personalizing their reaction. You allow them the space to have their emotions, set boundaries with damaging behaviors (like hurting other people), provide a healthy outlet for those emotions, and discuss rationally with your child once they have calmed down. Example, "I'm sorry, that toy is out of our budget, the answer is no. I can see you're frustrated, It can be hard to feel disappointed. Do you want to take some deep breaths with me? No? Ok that's alright. Oh no Bud, it's ok to be angry but it's not ok to throw things/hit, we could hurt other people --- so we have to leave the store now until we are calm." And proceed to calmly move yourself and the child on to a quiet place, even if still screaming. When the child is a little calmer you can employ regulation techniques (deep breathing together, etc) or if the kid has their own idea how to regulate their emotion and it's a safe idea, it's a "that's a great idea, let's do those jumping jacks together." When calm, you can have a rational discussion to reiterate boundaries and why they were required, etc, because the kid is now in a place to be able to learn. Parent modeled calm by not taking the child's behavior personally or reacting to the meltdown with their own dysregulated emotion, but they didn't ignore the emotion either, they named it and offered empathy, but the boundary was still held --- the toy was not given. Their big reaction didn't result in the lowering of the boundary, a harmful thing (throwing something, hitting) received a consequence that makes sense to that situation but isn't punitive (leaving the store). But it did open an avenue for them to feel and navigate the emotion. In this situation, an authoritarian/toxic parent might have personalized the kids emotions and pathologized it ("you're crazy!") or attacked the kids character ("you have anger issues kid"), screamed at their kid, yanked their kid or even hit their kid. Authoritarian parents assume they deserve subservience from children and offer no empathy --- they just require compliance. They also often have big reactions to children's emotions themselves, because they are more concerned about not "looking bad" in front of other parents due to unprocessed shame from their own childhoods, rather than the emotional well being of their child. They just want the feelings to go away. Permissive parenting (a whole other type of toxic, ranging from well meaning to enabling) would be like Dudley's parents in Harry Potter --- caving and buying the toy, plus a bunch of other toys, trying to make sure their kid is never disappointed, angry or sad, etc, even at the expense of others. They also struggle to process the emotions of others --- like the authoritarian parent, the permissive parent just wants the emotions to go away. Neither type of parent allowed their child to feel their feelings, and neither type taught the kid how to regulate or offered real empathy. Most of gentle parenting is honestly the adult's work to understand their own trauma triggers so they don't project into their kid, and about modeling empathy and boundaries and regulation and apologies and bodily autonomy. A kid can't learn how to regulate their own emotions unless they are offered empathy and helped through it and given appropriate outlets for the emotion. It's also about not holding children to an adult standard of behavior. Kids, especially little kids, have meltdowns, not because they are entitled or because they are malicious, but because they are facing big feelings, get overstimulated, etc., and don't have the cognitive abilities to regulate. It's about being aware of the actual cognitive processes in their brains so you don't hold them to a higher standard than their developmental stage or project adult motives onto them. But it's also about not seeing your kid as subservient --- kids are whole human beings, worthy of respect. Allowing kids to set common sense boundaries (I'm full, I don't want to hug Nana, I don't like it when you yell at me mom) and showing your kid that you respect their humanity.

As someone from Calgary, I was baffled (in a good way) when our city was mentioned in the first episode. Can confirm no one is as 'nice' as Doug here. Was highly disappointed in the lack of hockey referenced in an episode set here, though the bar fight was probably appropriate. Sidenote, rewatching Last of Us (which was filmed here) made me think now, would Doug protect himself from the infected, would he still consider them people? How long would he survive in that world (hours? seconds?)

@@DFQreacts Oh the wings used to be a mortal enemy of mine, not because of anything Flames related, but cause I was around during the Avs/Wings rivalry days (Flames were so aggressively bad in the mid-late 90's that they couldn't even suck hard enough to get good draft picks, I had to cheer for a real team). The fact that all those players from both sides are still friends now speaks to the insane level of respect they have for each other even after all the shit that went down. Now I'm picturing a montage of Doug in every zombie-related media, always saying please and sorry, and always dying 37 seconds into the pandemic. Also, wish I could have seen your reaction to Last of Us. As an OG member of Clone Club, thank you so much for helping to bring attention to Orphan Black. I can still picture the very first ad for the show coming out in 2012, it was about a 10 second montage of 4-5 of her faces including Beth on the autopsy table with Tatiana voice over saying something about "who are we?". I was hooked before the show started and it blew me away. I've had the clone phone as a ringtone for almost 10 years (to the point now where when I rewatch the show, if one of their phones goes off, I have an immediate reaction to grab my phone). Also, Clone swaps. Since this is (supposedly) a discussion about The Good Place, I have to ask if you've seen the video reveal of the season 1 twist for the actors? For anyone that doesn't know, only Kristen and Ted knew about the twist. They actually kept it from everyone else until they were almost at the end of filming season 1. So before they gave everyone the scripts for Ep. 13, Michael Shur sat the 4 of them down and talked them through the reveal and they filmed it, so we all get to see the actors finding out about the bad place in real time. Search 'Cast of The Good Place react to Season 1 Finale Ending (FULL)' on youtube.

Tbh; I have dug down WAY deep in "reaction" youtube clips.. and sometimes I follow one "reactor" a lot.. This is the FIRST video I see of this reactor.. and.. I SERIOUSLY wonder.. Whether there are people who ACTUALLY know of "radishes" and "beets".. Who.. get them confused.. seriously.. Have you seen OR eaten both.. and.. think that they are the same???. (They are VERY different.. Radishes are VERY sour.. and.. small and are both red and white.. and beets.. are kind of dull in the taste even IF they aren't boiled.. a BIT of a taste of.. dirt if they aren't boiled.. and.. a LOT bigger).. so.. Seriously.. I can't see how anyone would get them confused.. ).. So I WANT to know more about what people may or may not know.. (and I don't mean this insulting; It's about how you live your life, what you are presented with depending on where you live).. So.. tell me ALL You know and why you know it (I won't reply but I REALLY love all information I can get).. and.. IF!! you think you know of BOTH!!.... AND!! you think they can be confused with eachother.. Please please please, then YOU are the person I want more data points from the MOST!!.. I SERIOUSLY want to know the experiences you remember, how strongly you remember them, and so on... I want a circumstance to the concept.. Because I can't understand it from my OWN experiences. (I truly appreciate all things that can make me understand more of how the world works, and how other people think/react.. I probably wrote too much; I have Aspbergers and I kind of think that pointing out the questions I want to have more information about may make it look more valid, but I ACCEPT that people may think I am being sarcastic, but I am SERIOUSLY!!! not.. I may not "reply" because I write WAY too much to RESPOND to all responses I get, but I seriously will read every single response I get to this comment because.. it MAY give me more insight in something that I doesn't intuitively get)

"Would that extinguish it because there's still alcohol".. Well.. I actually intended to let my first comment "ride" with no more comments, but I feel like I HAVE to at least share some "truths" here. .(I wouldn't want to use this as an "appeal to authority", just as a reason to actually think that I MAY know what I am talking about).. Liquids don't burn.. ever.. Seriously.. The Liquid don't burn.. there are SOME things that can burn underwater (especially metal fires CAN'T be extinguished by being underwater).. but more importantly.. Alcohol. DOES burn.. but only in the gaseous form.. the reason it is VERY combustible IS because of the fumes.. it is the fumes that burns... IF you have a shot with a high enough percentage.. then.. the alcohol evaporates, and IF it is ENOUGH alcohol in the beverage then there will be a LOT of alcohol in the vapour.. POSSIBLY enough to actually combust.. so.. The fire you can make happen on an alcoholic beverage will never ever go down into the fluid (if it could it wouldn't burn, it would explode).. so.. Yeah.. TECHNICALLY?.. even a beverage that has ENOUGH alcohol in it to ACTUALLY burn?.. can be used to DRENCH something burning to the point that it will get extinguished... (BUT if the vapor above the surface has ENOUGH alcohol AND oxygen to actually burn then THAT may take fire as you put the thing burning into the actual fluid).. It's.. a bunch of factors interacting.. (as a fun fact sidenote: This is KIND of where the term.. "proof" came to be.. that is; There are NO easy ways to know actual percentages when you distil alcohol... but.. the "proof" measure (instead of percentage of alcohol) came to be as a WAY to define what is more or less concentrated alcohol.. because.. it relates to how much you have to add water in order for the vapours to NOT be combustible. All distilled beverages can be.. "set on fire".. as in.. IF you hold a match ABOVE the fluid the vapours will start burning.. BUT.. depending on how much you have to dilute it with water before this DOESN'T happen.. will show how "strong" the beverage is.

"Pretty decent choreography too".. well.. Technically.. yes.. absolutely.. but by this point of this series.. I had.. "fallen in love with" the actress playing Janet over and over again.. and.. the Choreography isn't even the key point.. and.. MOST of the points I make ARE of course because I am the.. "audience".. so.. I often had to think an extra step or two BEFORE I realized that.. "she actually was acting". That is.. I MAY sense that an actor may.. "fail" a bit in their portrayal.. but.. I don't know if they INTENTIONALLY do so (as if they are portraying something in another layer).. or.. if they ACTUALLY are capable to.. portray some.. cognitive dissonance, or something else. Of course I prefer to use.. "simple points" to find a "base" to reason around.. and. when it comes to Janet.. I.. DID look at her portraying a "Neutral Janet".. and I could SEE that she wasn't a neutral Janet because.. how she kind of WANTED to smile and it was OBVIOUS.. to me that she WASN'T a neutral Janet.. PARTS of which is the actual phrasings of what she said.. and.. THAT is very simple.. and.. that is absolutely within the script, so.. the narrative is the narrative.. HOWEVER.. I realized how much this relates to the actual actress when I.. ACTUALLY thought about the VERY simple fact that.. the ACTUAL Neutral Janet WAS the same actress.. so.. someone who has played a roll.. was trying to play ANOTHER roll.. AS they would've been TRYING to play the OTHER roll.. THAT.. is layer upon layer. .. and.. I am as sceptic as anyone can be.. and also as aware about how much I WANT things to "work" (confirmation bias?).. and so on.. but.. seriously.. I THINK she did a VERY good job.. when all pro's and con's are weighed.. I think she HAS to be a VERY good actress.. because she can not only play a part.. but she can play a part.. a different part.. and.. ALSO play one of those two parts playing the OTHER part.. and.. still make it.... Convincing enough.. AND.. When it comes to things such as.. "Suspension of disbelief", and just random.. "Going with the flow" or.. well.. I can't be arsed mentioning ALL Things I think about (because that would take more than a lifetime).. but seriously.. AFTER the last episode of the first season.. I never ever trusted the actual "writers" of this show ever again.. I don't say that they tricked me or that I saw threw them.. but.. I USUALLY realize that people trying to create a narrative that is outside of ACTUAL reality just.. WILL get some things wrong.. and. .I was WAY too lenient in the first season.. and.. this made me ENJOY this concept afterwards.. but.. REGARDLESS of my "paranoia".. Janet.. ALWAYS delivered.. REGARDLESS of whether I was trying to be a cynic OR trusting.. she never "failed".. and that ESPECIALLY is true when she tried to play other parts.. or.. other parts playing some OTHER parts.. and so on.. She was always.. "convincing enough". I don't know the actress (as of yet, I WILL learn her name.. soon.. AFTER I have learned what I want to learn by watching reactions to this series).. But I am looking forward to see her in other rolls.. because.as of now she has succeded PERFECTLY in a fairly complicated roll. that is MORE than one roll.. (Technically; Good, neutral AND bad Janet).. AND.. one of these rolls playing other rolls.. and so on.. so.. seriously.. I love this series.. and I love Janet.. (and if I may be a bit crude; The highest compliment ANY man can give to any woman IS.. "I would".. and.. sure.. "I would").. but also. .that is a sidenote and not related to me as a person, I REALLY really really want to see her in OTHER things.. That MAY be more complicated from SOME perspectives, because.. "being a computer" in itself is WAY too simple.. to be a computer.. that is DIFFERENT.. from what people "know now" of what it means to be a computer. .is.. if anything.. even MORE simple.. So.. she is portraying a SHITLOAD of complexity.. which is an EXTREME positive.. but also.. she is expressing that complexity in a VERY simple frame-work.. ??. so.. I REALLY like ambiguity and big conflicts and so on.. So.. SERIOUSLY!!.. I am looking forward to.. EITHER.. get disappointed.. OR!!.. getting even MORE excited about her as an actress. Either way I can say for SURE I will be happy.. and.. probably even like it EVEN if I have some (kind of big) criticisms.. I SERIOUSLY want to see the rest of her "body of work".,.and I REALLY want it to be VERY central.
